Using a surrogate human digital twin to model embodied perception and cognition for neuroergonomics.

Understanding and predicting human behavior in dynamic, multisensory environments is one of the central challenges in neuroergonomics and human-centered artificial intelligence. Computational neuroscience provides mechanistic theories of perception, attention, and decision-making, but these insights have not yet been fully integrated into real-time digital representations of human physical behavior. Conversely, Human Digital Twins (HDTs) can successfully represent human physical characteristics, especially biomechanics and physiology, but remain limited in capturing the added complexities of e

Sex mechanisms as nonbinary influences on cognitive diversity.

Essentially all neuropsychiatric diagnoses show some degree of sex and/or gender differences in their etiology, diagnosis, or prognosis. As a result, the roles of sex-related variables in behavior and cognition are of strong interest to many, with several lines of research showing effects on executive functions and value-based decision making in particular. These findings are often framed within a sex binary, with behavior of females described as less optimal than male "defaults"-- a framing that pits males and females against each other and deemphasizes the enormous overlap in fundamental neu

Comparisons of the structure and function of higher cortical circuits in marmosets and macaques: Models for mental health disorders.

Non-human primates are extremely valuable for neuroscience research due to their strong homology to humans. Marmosets are small, highly social primates, amenable to genetic and circuit manipulations. Macaques, a larger and more aggressive primate, have been the non-human primate model of choice for decades, particularly for studying cognition. Comparative structural and functional studies have begun to reveal important similarities and differences between these models, shedding new light on their respective strengths and limitations for modeling psychiatric disorders. Here, we first review per

Neuropsychiatric outcomes in sepsis: A vital sign worth monitoring.

Septic shock is a state of physiological disarray that disrupts perfusion, overwhelms inflammatory control, and, as evidence now shows, compromises the structural and functional integrity of the brain. In their recent study, Li et al explored how specific hemodynamic derangements, such as reduced cardiac index, low mean arterial pressure, and elevated lactate, correlate with neuropsychiatric outcomes including delirium, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The findings reframe psychiatric symptoms not only as downstream consequences, but as measurable, clinically relevant e

Age-related reductions in whole brain mass and telencephalon volume in very old white Carneau pigeons (Columba livia).

While studies have identified age-related cognitive impairment in pigeons (Columba livia), no study has detected the brain atrophy which typically accompanies cognitive impairment in older mammals. Instead, Coppola and Bingman (Aging is associated with larger brain mass and volume in homing pigeons (Columba livia), Neurosci. Letters 698 (2019) 39-43) reported increased whole brain mass and telencephalon volume in older, compared to younger, homing pigeons. One reason for this unexpected finding might be that the older pigeons studied were not old enough to display age-related brain atrophy. Th

Stable individual differences from dynamic patterns of function: brain network flexibility predicts openness/intellect, intelligence, and psychoticism.

A growing understanding of the nature of brain function has led to increased interest in interpreting the properties of large-scale brain networks. Methodological advances in network neuroscience provide means to decompose these networks into smaller functional communities and measure how they reconfigure over time as an index of their dynamic and flexible properties. Recent evidence has identified associations between flexibility and a variety of traits pertaining to complex cognition including creativity and working memory. The present study used measures of dynamic resting-state functional

Neurocircuit models of obsessive-compulsive disorder: limitations and future directions for research.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common psychiatric condition classically characterized by obsessions (recurrent, intrusive and unwanted thoughts) and compulsions (excessive, repetitive and ritualistic behaviors or mental acts). OCD is heterogeneous in its clinical presentation and not all patients respond to first-line treatments. Several neurocircuit models of OCD have been proposed with the aim of providing a better understanding of the neural and cognitive mechanisms involved in the disorder. These models use advances in neuroscience and findings from neuropsychological and neuroim

Probabilistic value learning in medial temporal lobe amnesia.

A prevailing view in cognitive neuroscience suggests that different forms of learning are mediated by dissociable memory systems, with a mesolimbic (i.e., midbrain and basal ganglia) system supporting incremental trial-and-error reinforcement learning and a hippocampal-based system supporting episodic memory. Yet, growing evidence suggests that the hippocampus may also be important for trial-and-error learning, particularly value or reward-based learning. In the present report, we use a lesion-based neuropsychological approach to clarify hippocampal contributions to such learning. Six amnesic …

Pure agraphia following a focal lesion in exner's area: a case study supporting the dual-route and network models of writing.

BACKGROUND: Pure agraphia represents a rare neuropsychological syndrome in which writing is selectively impaired while other language modalities remain intact, providing a unique window into the specialized cognitive and neural mechanisms that support written language production. Drawing on the dual-route cognitive model that posits separable lexical and sublexical spelling mechanisms (Patterson, Acquired disorders of spelling, 1988; Rapp and Caramazza, J Exp Psychol: Human Perception and Performance 23:1130-152, 1997; Rapp et al., Cogn Neuropsychology 19:1-29, 2002), whereas network models em

Clinical neuropsychology was forged in a pre-digital era, and many of its core instruments still bear that imprint. Patients are still commo … tive ageing, I outline a roadmap for addressing these gaps. I propose that the field now requires a Cognitive Neuroscience of Technology programme, conceived as an interdisciplinary, lifespan-oriented research framework aimed at understanding how technologies recruit, extend, and reshape the human brain, and at translating this knowledge into clinical practice. Proposed Conditions for Pain Reprocessing Therapy Readiness: Beyond Phenotyping Neuroplastic Pain.

PURPOSE: This paper examines the clinical gap between identifying neuroplastic pain and achieving treatment success with Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), proposing a structured readiness framework to guide clinicians in determining when patients are appropriately positioned to engage with this intervention for chronic primary pain. RECENT FINDINGS: Despite a randomized controlled trial demonstrating that approximately 66% of PRT participants achieved pain-free or nearly pain-free status at one year, no implementation guidelines exist for establishing patient readiness prior to initiating trea

Social concepts and the cerebellum: behavioural and functional connectivity signatures in cerebellar ataxic patients.

Neurocognitive research on social concepts underscores their reliance on fronto-temporo-limbic regions mediating broad socio-cognitive skills. Yet, the field has neglected another structure increasingly implicated in social cognition: the cerebellum. The present exploratory study examines this link combining a novel naturalistic text paradigm, a relevant atrophy model and functional magnetic resonance imaging. Fifteen cerebellar ataxia (CA) patients with focal cerebellar atrophy and 29 matched controls listened to a social text (highlighting interpersonal events) as well as a non-social text (

Fundamental neuroscience and the classification of psychiatric disorders.

Non-Darwinian views of evolution of nervous systems (e.g., Jacksonian evolution) conceive the present structure of the human brain as composed of a series of additive layers representing successive phylogenetic stages in evolution, layers which remain static after their emergence. In contrast to this view, recent allometric studies clearly show that limbic structures scale with the growth of the human brain (i.e., they do not remain stable but reach the size expected for the brain of a primate with the weight of a human brain). Data also show that limbic structures are significantly involved i

RDoC-informed explainable AI as a paradigm for multilevel Alzheimer's disease diagnosis and progression prediction: a systematic review.

Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) is gaining popularity in early diagnosis and monitoring of dementia. Herein, we recommend the incorporation of the National Institute of Mental Health's Research Domain Criteria (NIMH-RDoC) framework with XAI-informed diagnostic protocols to help establish diagnosis at early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). RDoC has a dimensional structure that extends across units of analysis from genes and molecules to circuits, physiology, behavior, and introspection. By restructuring diverse features as inputs including apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype, amyloid

Unbiased analysis of spatial learning strategies in a modified Barnes maze using convolutional neural networks.

Assessment of spatial learning abilities is central to behavioral neuroscience and a useful tool for animal model validation and drug development. However, biases introduced by the apparatus, environment, or experimentalist represent a critical challenge to the test validity. We have recently developed the Modified Barnes Maze (MBM) task, a spatial learning paradigm that overcomes inherent behavioral biases of animals in the classical Barnes maze. The specific combination of spatial strategies employed by mice is often considered representative of the level of cognitive resources used. Herein,

Cardiac cycle gated cognitive-emotional control in superior frontal cortices.

Accumulating evidence suggests that peripheral physiological processes, such as the cardiac cycle, impact the individual's ability to approp … se and difficulty to select a response. The presented work has an essential methodological focus in cognitive neuroscience for investigating brain-body interaction. It shows how peripheral-physiological parameters can be used to control EEG experiments and that the cardiac cycle has very specific effects in neurophysiological processes and associated functional neuroana …
