Impact of Helicobacter pylori-giardiasis coinfection on children with recurrent abdominal pain.

Recurrent abdominal pain (RAP) affects 10-20% of school-aged children. Helicobacter pylori and Giardia intestinalis were reported among organic causes of RAP, with different prevalence particularly in developing countries as common association diseases causing agents. This study evaluated the incidence of H. pylori and G. intestinalis co-infection in RAP Egyptian among 90 children and 90 crossmatched healthy controls. H. pylori (HP) infection was diagnosed by detection of HP stool antigen (HPSA), ELISA and/or HP antibody (IgG), ELISA in serum, while G. intestinalis by stained stool smears. The

Coinfection with Clonorchis sinensis modulates murine host response against Trichinella spiralis infection.

Concomitant infections of different species of parasites are common in the field. Infection with one parasite species likely triggers host responses that may influence the subsequent infection of another species and alter disease outcomes. So far, the majority of studies have focused on single species parasite infection, and the mechanisms of protection induced by the first parasite infection against the secondary infection remain poorly defined. In this study, we assess the impact of trematode Clonorchis sinensis infection on the course of another tissue nematode Trichinella spiralis challeng

Coinfection of pulmonary mucormycosis and aspergillosis presenting as bilateral vocal cord palsy.

Invasive pulmonary coinfection with Mucor and Aspergillus is rare. Bilateral vocal cord paralysis resulting from coinfection with these two fungi to our knowledge has not been reported in the literature. We report a young woman with diabetes who presented with symptoms of community acquired pneumonia in association with hoarseness of voice. Investigations revealed air space consolidation of the right upper lobe, evidence of mediastinal involvement extending into the paratracheal space and entrapment of right upper lobe pulmonary artery. Bronchoscopy revealed bilateral vocal cord paralysis and …

The two-edged sword: vasculitis associated with HIV and hepatitis C coinfection.

Vasculitis has long been associated with chronic viral infections, thus the twin perils of the infection and the immune response against it that bedevils the specialties of infection and immunity. After HIV was identified, it too became associated with vasculitic syndromes. Later, hepatitis C virus was also isolated, identified and described with its own spectrum of vasculitic diseases, including hepatitis C virus-associated cryoglobulinaemia. With the increasing prevalence of HIV and hepatitis C virus coinfection, there has come an increasing recognition of the range of vasculitides that can …

Coinfection in acute gastroenteritis predicts a more severe clinical course in children.

The objectives of this study were to determine the incidence of enteric pathogens causing acute gastroenteritis (AGE) among hospitalized children in a large Italian hospital, to measure the incidence of coinfections, and to compare the clinical characteristics of those infected with one versus multiple agents. A prospective study was conducted from March 2010 to April 2011 at the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital in Rome, Italy. All patients between 1 month and 16 years of age admitted to the Pediatric Department with a diagnosis of AGE were eligible for enrollment. Two stool samples for each pa…

Severity of viral coinfection in hospitalized infants with respiratory syncytial virus infection.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the severity of single respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections with that of coinfections. METHODS: A historical cohort was studied, including hospitalized infants with acute RSV infection. Nasopharyngeal aspirate samples were collected from all patients to detect eight respiratory viruses using molecular biology techniques. The following outcomes were analyzed: duration of hospitalization and of oxygen therapy, intensive care unit admission and need of mechanical ventilation. Results were adjusted for confounding factors (prematurity, age and breastfeeding). RESULT…

HIV-1/mycobacterium tuberculosis coinfection immunology: how does HIV-1 exacerbate tuberculosis?

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV) and Mycobacterium tuberculosis have become intertwined over the past few decades in a "syndemic" that exacerbates the morbidity and mortality associated with each pathogen alone. The severity of the coinfection has been extensively examined in clinical studies. The extrapolation of peripheral evidence from clinical studies has increased our basic understanding of how HIV increases susceptibility to TB. These studies have resulted in multiple hypotheses of how HIV exacerbates TB pathology through the manipulation of granulomas. Granulomas can be located…

Suppression of Plasmodium cynomolgi in rhesus macaques by coinfection with Babesia microti.

Both Plasmodium and Babesia species are intraerythrocytic protozoans that infect a wide range of hosts, including humans, and they elicit similar inflammatory responses and clinical manifestations that differ markedly in severity. We recently reported that a rhesus macaque that was chronically infected with Babesia microti was able to control infection with Plasmodium cynomolgi (a parasite of macaques with characteristics very similar to those of Plasmodium vivax) better than naïve monkeys. To confirm this and to investigate the underlying immunopathology, six naïve rhesus monkeys were infecte

HIV/human T-cell lymphotropic virus coinfection revisited: impact on AIDS progression.

Human T-cell lymphotropic viruses type 1 and 2 are retroviruses that share the same routes of transmission as HIV-1. Since these agents are prevalent simultaneously in different parts of the world, coinfection is a frequently reported event. However, prevalence rates of coinfection differ for distinct populations and regions of the world or for each virus, with human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 being more prevalent among HIV-1-infected individuals in the Southern hemisphere, while type 2 is more frequently found in the Northern hemisphere. In common, they share the tropism for T-lymphocyt…

Cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus coinfection in three toddlers with prolonged illnesses.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) usually cause primary and latent infections during childhood; thus, coinfection with these viruses occurs occasionally in children. However, its clinical impact has not been established, and may be underestimated. Three cases of coinfection involving these two viruses in toddlers are described: a 14-month-old male with infectious mononucleosis, an 18-month-old female with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis, and a 13-month-old female with acute hepatitis. All three patients had prolonged illnesses. Serial serological testing and quantitation of…

Coinfection with HIV-1 and simian foamy virus in West Central Africans.

Frequent infection with zoonotic simian foamy virus (SFV) has been reported among HIV-negative primate hunters in rural Cameroon. Plasma samples obtained from urban commercial sex workers (CSWs; n = 139), patients with sexually transmitted diseases (n = 41), and blood donors (n = 179) in the Democratic Republic of Congo [formerly known as Zaire] and Cameroon were tested for SFV and HIV-1 infection. One CSW and one blood donor were found to be seropositive for both SFV and HIV-1, thereby documenting what are, to our knowledge, the first reported cases of dual SFV and HIV infection. The findings

Campylobacter immunity and coinfection following a large outbreak in a farming community.

An outbreak of campylobacteriosis affected approximately one-half of 165 people attending an annual farmers' dance in Montrose, Scotland, in November 2005. Epidemiological investigations, including a cohort study (n = 164), identified chicken liver paté as the most likely vehicle of infection. Paté preparation involved deliberate undercooking of chicken livers by flash-frying, followed by mechanical homogenization. Typing of 32 Campylobacter strains (isolated from submitted stools) by multilocus sequence typing identified four distinct clades of Campylobacter jejuni. There was good agreement w

Coinfection of cytomegalovirus and miliary tuberculosis in a post-renal transplant recipient.

Infections are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality during the early posttransplant period. Of these infections, pulmonary infections are the most serious. Bacteria are the leading pathogen, followed by various opportunistic pathogens, such as cytomegalovirus (CMV) and mycobacterium tuberculosis. This investigation describes a 52-year-old male with a rare coinfection of CMV pneumonitis and miliary tuberculosis, 2 months after renal transplantation. This is the first case report of a coinfection with cytomegalovirus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis presenting with diffuse pulmonary miliar…

Morbidity due to Schistosoma mansoni--Entamoeba histolytica coinfection in hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Data on Schistosoma mansoni-Entamoeba histolytica coinfection are scarce in the literature. In the present study, hamsters that had been infected for 70 days with Schistosoma mansoni (LE strain) were inoculated via the portal vein with two strains of trophozoites of Entamoeba histolytica: ICB-EGG (highly virulent) and ICB-RPS (non-virulent). The most evident result of coinfection was increased morbidity and mortality, in comparison with either of the infections alone. Histologically, there were no evident signs of interaction between these two infections. The morphological findings of schistos…

Amelioration of influenza-induced pathology in mice by coinfection with Trichinella spiralis.

Illness due to respiratory virus infection is often induced by excessive infiltration of cells into pulmonary tissues, leading to airway occlusion. We show here that infection with Trichinella spiralis results in lower levels of tumor necrosis factor in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and inhibits cellular recruitment into the airways of mice coinfected with influenza A virus. Infiltration of neutrophils and CD4+ and CD8+ lymphocytes was reduced, resulting in animals gaining weight more rapidly following the initial phase of infection. Influenza resulted in a generalized increase in vascular perm

Mycobacterium avium and Burkholderia pseudomallei (Melioidosis) coinfection in an HIV-positive patient.

A 29 year old HIV positive Thai female with CD4 count of 10 cells/mm3 presented with chronic diffuse abdominal pain, fever, weight loss, anemia and leucopenia. Ultrasonography demonstrated diffuse upper abdominal lymphadenopathy with ascites. Microbiological and molecular work up of the specimen obtained by ultrasound-guided lymph node aspiration revealed co-infection with Burkholderia pseudomallei and Mycobacterium avium. Indirect hemagglutination, IgM-indirect fluorescent antibody, and IgG-indirect fluorescent antibody to Burkholderia pseudomallei were < 1:20, < 1:50 and < 1:50, respectively

Influence of HIV-1 coinfection on effective management of abnormal vaginal discharge.

BACKGROUND: Reports on microbiologic cure rates following syndromic management (SM) of women with nonulcerative sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are limited. GOAL: The goal of the study was to determine the effectiveness of the drugs used in SM of nonulcerative STIs and bacterial vaginosis in women and to compare the response among those with and without HIV-1 coinfection. STUDY DESIGN: This was a cohort study of women with nonulcerative STIs who were treated according to local SM protocols. RESULTS: Of 692 women recruited, 415 (80%) returned 8 to 10 days later, and 290 (70%) consente…

Human immunodeficiency virus-hepatitis C coinfection: swapping new problems for newer ones.

Recent successes in HIV therapy have uncovered other health problems for HIV-infected individuals. Hepatitis C has become an especially significant problem, partly due to its faster progression in an immunocompromised setting. In addition, the higher viral loads in coinfected patients likely result in more efficient perinatal and perhaps even sexual transmission. Therapy has largely been neglected, despite data suggesting its efficacy in HIV-HCV coinfected patients. Studies of combination interferon and ribavirin studies are lacking, although underway. A major concern is the potential inactiva
