INTRODUCTION: Frostbite is well documented in the military and countries with extreme temperatures, and it is most likely due to increased exposure to cold temperatures and/or risk-taking behavior. Severity of injury depends on absolute temperature, wind chill, duration of exposure, wet or dry cold, immersion, clothing quality, and substance use. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been described as a treatment option but only in small case series.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this retrospective study is to describe the usage patterns, side effects, and outcomes of HBOT used as an adjunct to wound

Reproducibility remains a challenge in spinal cord injury (SCI) research, and the absence of standardized preclinical models and outcomes slows clinical translation of promising findings. Contract research organization CRO-based screening platforms partially address this in epilepsy and pain, yet no equivalent resource exists for SCI. Thus, the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation partnered with PsychoGenics, Inc. and an expert panel to develop a standardized, blinded screening platform using a rat mid-thoracic (T8) contusion model tested across four severities on Infinite Horizons impactor dev

BACKGROUND: Graft injury incurred during periods of cold storage remains a factor affecting the success of small bowel (SB) transplantation. No one preservation solution, including the gold standard University of Wisconsin (UW) solution, has been able to maintain graft integrity for storage periods paralleling that of other commonly transplanted intra-abdominal organs. We investigated the role for the luminal administration of preservation solutions in a small animal model, documenting significantly improved graft quality. The current study addresses direct clinical applicability using human S

BACKGROUND: Donation after circulatory death (DCD) grafts are vital for increasing available donor organs. Gradual rewarming during machine perfusion has proven effective in mitigating reperfusion injury and enhancing graft quality. Limited data exist on artificial oxygen carriers as an effective solution to meet the increasing metabolic demand with temperature changes. The aim of the present study was to assess the efficacy and safety of utilizing a hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier (HBOC) during the gradual rewarming of DCD rat livers.
METHODS: Liver grafts were procured after 30 min of warm

BACKGROUND: In many cases, an injury to the head leads to the replacement of a part of the skull with materials such as titanium and polyether ether ketone.
METHODS: Three-dimensional heads model of 15 healthy individuals and 13 patients were prepared. The models were simulated using thermal fluid structure interaction analysis to evaluate the effects of cold (5°C) and hot (55°C) temperatures of the skull on the conditions of blood flow in the anterior cerebral artery.
RESULTS: The results showed negligible changes (<3%) in wall shear stress (WSS) vessel and von Mises stress between the heal

Tolerance against winter freeze is the main focus of variety development in Louisiana, which represents the northernmost sugarcane-growing region worldwide. Antifreeze metabolites, xylem structure, and fiber content represent interrelated physicochemical properties contributing to freeze tolerance. This study first classified the cold tolerance of sugarcane cultivars using metabolites in juice as predictor variables. The best-fit model (XGBoost discriminant analysis) estimated the higher cold tolerance of the final on-station clone progeny to the stress tolerance-inducing wild germplasm line.

Diabetes comorbidities include disabling peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and an increased risk of developing cancer. Antimitotic drugs, such as paclitaxel, are well known to facilitate the occurrence of peripheral neuropathy. Practitioners frequently observe the development or co-occurrence of enhanced DPN, especially cold sensitivity, in diabetic patients during chemotherapy. Preclinical studies showed that reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cold activate transient receptor potential ankyrin-1 (TRPA1) cation channels, which are involved in cold-evoked pain transduction signaling in DPN. Additional

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the independent relationship of the Shaw scalpel on the development of facial nerve injury in patients undergoing superficial parotidectomy.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 77 cases between 1991 and 1996. Forty-eight percent of the surgical procedures were performed using the Shaw scalpel, and 52% were performed using a cold knife. To assess whether use of the Shaw scalpel is an independent predictor of facial nerve injury, both univariate analysis and regression analysis were used in the statistical analysis of the data.
RESULTS: Fifty-four percent of the patients

The pathogenesis of steatitis that infrequently occurs in cold-stunned Kemp’s ridley sea turtles (KRT; Lepidochelys kempii) has been undetermined. The objectives of this study were to investigate the clinical (n = 23) and histologic findings (n = 11) in cold-stunned KRT, and to compare plasma concentrations of α-tocopherol (vitamin E), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and the TBARS to vitamin E (T/E) ratio (an assessment of oxidative stress) between cold-stunned KRT with clinically and/or histologically confirmed steatitis (n = 10) and free-ranging KRT (n = 9). None of the cold

Open fasciectomy is a widely accepted treatment for Dupuytren's contracture, with known complications such as vascular and nerve injury, stiffness, and recurrence. However, delayed vascular complications beyond these known risks remain largely unexplored. A 57-year-old nonsmoking man underwent open fasciectomy for Dupuytren's contracture of the little finger. Six months postoperatively, he developed Raynaud's phenomenon in the operated finger, characterized by cold-induced pallor that resolved with rewarming. Examination revealed sluggish circulation in the ulnar digital artery and altered sen

Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a pleiotropic hormone that promotes hippocampal neuroprotection in animal models of ischemic brain injury, but how it works is unclear. In the first experiment we subjected isolated hippocampal neurons to oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) injury to test if FGF21 induced neuroprotection is mediated by its direct effects on neurons. Further, because cold stress regulates FGF21 levels in animals, we also explored if post-insult temperature (37 °C versus 33.5 °C) modified FGF21 induced neuroprotection. Experiment 1 revealed that FGF21 treatment at 37 °C decrea

To promote organ transplantation and viability, hypothermia has been applied as a protective agent for decades. Current management of organ preservation includes hypothermia as a component of static storage. In rare cases, hypothermic perfusion is initiated in the donor organs prior to harvesting but this requires invasive perfusion techniques. Therefore, hypothermic organ protection is currently achieved only after organ retrieval and onset of ischaemic injury cascades. The relevant mechanisms of cellular and organ damage involve ischaemia-reperfusion injury and apoptosis. In this hypothesis,

This study investigated the effects of dual endothelin (ET) receptor blockade in rat models of liver ischemia and reperfusion injury (IRI). Three models of IRI were used: (1) in vivo total hepatic warm ischemia with portal shunting for 60 minutes with control (saline) and treatment groups (15 mg/kg tezosentan intravenously prior to reperfusion), (2) ex vivo hepatic perfusion after 24 hours of cold storage in University of Wisconsin solution with control and treatment groups (10 mg/kg tezosentan in the perfusate), and (3) syngeneic liver transplantation (LT) after 24 hours of cold storage in Un

BACKGROUND: Ice/saline slush used along with cold cardioplegia for heart arrest in cardiac operations can cause hypothermic damage to certain structures, an important one being the left phrenic nerve, damage of which results in raised left hemidiaphragm and delayed recovery of the patient. In coronary artery bypass grafting, opening of the pleura and collection of the ice/saline slush in the pleural cavity increases the incidence of injury.
METHODS: Three of our nonconsecutive patients underwent coronary artery bypass grafting with cold cardioplegia and open pleura, with collection of ice/sal

Chilling injury caused by low temperatures severely reduces the postharvest quality and marketability of banana fruit. Although glutathione S‑transferase (GST)-mediated reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging constitutes a core antioxidant defense against cold oxidative stress, the transcriptional and post‑translational mechanisms governing this process remain largely elusive. Here, we discovered that S‑glutathionylation of the WRKY transcription factor MaWRKY44 functions as a previously unknown redox switch that orchestrates a hierarchical transcriptional cascade to enhance cold tolerance. Ten percent of chronic urticarias are physical urticarias. Patients suffering from physical urticaria all have a suggestive history with specific eliciting stimuli (cold, heat, water, sun.) and wheals in the areas where the stimulus acts. The involved pathomechanisms are not well known. An unknown allergen (related to a cold or a heat injury, a polar molecule contained in the stratum corneum and soluble into water, a photoallergen) could induce a mast cell mediator release, followed by an infiltration by eosinophil then neutrophils polymorphonuclears. T-cells are not highly involved. Dermograp

Renal transplant recipients currently survive many years with a consequent increase in the risk of presentation with vascular diseases. So aortic reconstruction in transplant patients has been increasingly reported the most common procedures involving abdominal aorta aneurysms (AAAs). The most important problem during the operation is ischemic injury to the transplanted kidney during aortic clamping. Protection for the grafted kidney from ischemic or reperfusion injury may be achieved by permanent or temporary axillo-femoral, femoro-femoral, aorto-iliac bypass, cold perfusion, local cold prese
