OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of coenzyme Q-10 (CoQ-10) on the dysregulated synthesis of extracellular matrix proteins mediated by transforming growth factor beta 3 (TGF-β3) in uterine leiomyomas.

BACKGROUND: Heat shock protein 47 (HSP47), a collagen-specific molecular chaperone, is involved in the biosynthesis and secretion of procollagen. Recent studies have shown a close association between increased HSP47 and excessive accumulation of collagens in various fibrotic diseases. Oral submucous fibrosis is a chronic disease of the oral cavity. The basic histological change which occurs is a fibroelastic transformation of the connective tissue in the laminal propria layer associated with epithelial atrophy. The etiology of the disease is uncertain, but there is a close association suggested both geographically and epidemiologically with the habitual chewing of betel nuts. The accumulation of collagen fibers increases with the severity of the disease, and the fibroblasts in the normal mucosa and in the fibrotic mucosa increased their proliferation and collagen synthesis.

The purpose of this article is to investigate the effect of Opuntia stricta H (Cactaceae) extract on suppression of hypertrophic scar on ventral surface wounds of rabbit ears. Full thickness skin defection was established in a rabbit ear to simulate hypertrophic scar. Fibroblasts derived from skin biopsies of a patient with a congenital defect of connective tissue revealed a disturbance in collagen synthesis. The defect was found in the mechanism that controls the type of collagen synthesized. Biochemical data as well as evaluation of immunofluorescent micrographs using collagen type-specific antibodies, suggested that the fibroblasts of this patient synthesized type III collagen, at a time and rate which was not found in fibroblasts from an age-matched healthy individual.
