Renal allotransplantation is the treatment of choice for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). With increasing technical expertise, it has been realised that presence of a normal lower urinary tract is not a necessity for transplantation. Advanced genito-urinary tuberculosis frequently leads to a small-capacity bladder. Herein, we present a case of ESRD due to urinary tuberculosis in whom sigmoid colon conduit urinary diversion was carried out. The immunosuppressed status did not increase the complications of a sigmoid colon conduit urinary diversion.

The use of bowel segments for bladder replacement or augmentation has been associated with metabolic complications and obstruction due to mucus production. Establishment of a transitional epithelium over the de-epithelialized surface of a segment of intestine might alleviate these complications. Twenty Holstein bull calves underwent sigmoidocystoplasty. Fourteen experimental animals had the epithelium of the sigmoid removed before augmentation. Six calves with intact mucosa served as controls. Fifteen calves survived the study: 11 experimentals and four controls. Cystectomies were performed at

A 38-yr-old woman presented with abdominal pain, hematochezia, and fever of 7 days' duration. Computerized tomographic scanning revealed a mass 6 cm in diameter adherent to the sigmoid colon. At surgery, the mass was determined to be an endometrioma with an associated tubo-ovarian abscess eroding the sigmoid colonic wall. This case, illustrating colonic perforation, represents a rare complication of intestinal endometriosis and, to our knowledge, represents the first reported case of colonic perforation secondary to endometriosis not associated with pregnancy. The clinical manifestations of in

Colonscopy performed in five patients because of narrowing of the sigmoid colon with intramural diverticula revealed several bright red, slightly elevated patches. In three patients, some bright red polypoid structures 1 cm in size and hemispherical in shape were also present. On light microscopy the polyps showed the features of transitional mucosa but revealed a different pattern of mucus secretion.

We investigated sexual and urinary dysfunction following surgery for sigmoid colon cancer. Thirteen (46.4 per cent) of the 28 male patients with a normal sexual life prior to surgery could no longer ejaculate, but all could maintain erection. With the extension of lymph node dissection, the incidence of a disappearance of ejaculation tended to increase. In particular, in patients undergoing an extended lymph node dissection, the incidence was 53.8 per cent. Urinary dysfunction occurred in 7 (10.3 per cent) of the 68 patients (37 men and 31 women), but was slight to mild. There were no signific

We present a patient with dolicho sigmoid colon who as admitted with severe functional signs and symptoms. Sigmoid colectomy was performed because of additional radiologic and endoscopic findings revealing an atypical, circumscribed massive polyposis. On histological examination typical pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis was found. This case of pneumatosis cystoides reveals the difficulties in diagnosing this disease, mechanically induced mucosul lesions caused by impaired motility are discussed as a possible etiology in this case.

I have described a case of pyogenic liver abscess secondary to completely asymptomatic diverticulitis. Because extensive diverticulitis may be present with minimal or no clinical symptoms, it should be strongly considered as the cause when dealing with a so-called "cryptogenic" liver abscess, and treatment should be planned accordingly.

55 patients suffering from diverticulosis of the sigmoid colon underwent surgery, 32 of them in a state of emergency (peritonitis, ileus); mortality rate 22%. In 28 patients a colostomy was performed, which later on could be removed to restore the continuity of the colon. The therapy of choice in the early stage of diverticulosis is resection of the sigmoid colon performed as a ono-stage procedure (mortality rate les than 1%).

Operation in three stages with primary defunctioning colostomy and drainage of the perforation is the procedure mostly recommended in literature, although the mortality rate ranges from 33 to 75%. Therefore, we prefer the immediate resection of the perforated bowel with primary anastomosis, or if possible, in poor risk cases Hartmann's procedure respectively. Anastomosis should be protected by a defunctioning colostomy in all but exceptional good cases. 2 of our 18 patients died, only 1 of 15 (7%) with primary bowel resection.

32 patients suffering from diverticulitis of the sigmoid colon underwent resection with end-to-end-anastomosis. In 24 cases the operation was performed electively as a one step procedure, the rest of the patients were operated on by two or three steps. One patient with ileus and peritonitis came to death. 28 from 31 surviving patients live without trouble. Resection of the inflammatory part of intestine is recommended instead of permanent colostomy.

Synchronous colonic volvulus is an extremely rare and life-threatening cause of large bowel obstruction, characterized by simultaneous torsion of two separate colonic segments. Early diagnosis is challenging due to its nonspecific clinical presentation and overlapping radiological features with isolated volvulus. Delay in recognition increases the risk of ischemia, perforation, sepsis, and mortality, making rapid identification and surgical intervention critical. We present a case of a middle-aged patient who arrived at the emergency department with progressive abdominal pain, distension, cons

Sigmoid volvulus is an unusual cause of intestinal obstruction in children. We report two cases of sigmoid volvulus as a complication of segmental dilatation of the colon occurring in two girls (5 years old and 9 years old) previously treated for chronic constipation. In both cases the constipation had been recognised since the neonatal period mimicking a Hirschsprung's disease, a diagnosis which has been excluded after rectal biopsy. The delayed diagnosis of segmental dilatation of the sigmoid colon followed the volvulus. Segmental colonic resection resulted in both cases in the cure of the c

It is not yet clear whether the regional differences in the physical properties of the colon influence its motor responses. Tonic and phasic colonic motility and compliance of the transverse and sigmoid colon were therefore assessed using a combined barostat-manometry assembly in 22 healthy subjects. Measured colonic compliance was corrected by subtraction of the compliance of the closed barostat system. The mean (SEM) preprandial colonic volumes in the transverse and sigmoid colon were similar (150 (12) and 128 (13) ml, p = NS), corresponding to calculated mean (SEM) colonic diameters of 4.3

Background: Lipoma is one of the benign tumors that originate from adipose tissue, most likely in the neck, chest, back, shoulders, arms, and thighs. It is rare to find lipoma originating from submucosal adipose tissue. Colonic submucosal lipomas develop at frequency of 0.035%-4.4%. The incidence of submucosal colonic lipoma is 0.15% at colonoscopy. Intussusception is a common cause of bowel obstruction in children; however, it is rare in adults. Usually, it has a malignant background in adults. Case Presentation: A 43-year-old male presented to the hospital with a history of intermittent abdo

INTRODUCTION: Colonic ischemia is challenging to diagnose preoperatively. We present a patient with colonic ischemia, initially considered to have colonic obstruction. We review the history, physical findings, imaging, operative documents and postoperative diagnosis of this patient with an atypical presentation of colonic ischemia.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 74-year old female presented with dyspnea on exertion and melena. A tumor in the sigmoid colon was identified by colonoscopy and biopsy showed adenocarcinoma. After admission, she developed abdominal pain. Computed tomography scan revealed t

RATIONALE: Intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUDs) are recommended as a means of contraception. Translocation of IUD is a rare and serious complication. Colonic inflammatory mass caused by translocated IUD initially misdiagnosed as a colonic polyp is extremely rare and has not been reported yet.
PATIENT CONCERNS: This report presents a case of sigmoid colon translocation of intrauterine device on a 37-year-old female patient. Colonoscopy was performed due to her complain of repeated blood in stools and subsequently the patient was misdiagnosed as a sigmoid colon polyp. Nonetheless, the "pol
