Periodontitis and multiple markers of cardiometabolic risk in the fourth decade: A cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine associations between periodontitis at ages 32 and 38 and a range of early cardiometabolic risk biomarkers at age 38. METHODS: Periodontal probing depth and bleeding on probing data collected during the age-32 and age-38 assessments in the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study were used to quantify periodontal inflammatory load. Retinal microvascular abnormalities, endothelial dysfunction, and metabolic syndrome data were collected during the age-38 assessment. Regression models were used to examine associations between these cardiometabolic risk markers

Impact of oral health literacy on self-reported missing data in epidemiological research.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether oral health literacy (OHL) impacts missing data obtained through self-reporting in oral health epidemiological research. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with parents (n = 344) of 4- to 5-year-old children randomly selected from public schools within the city of Curitiba, Brazil. Parental OHL was measured using the Brazilian version of the Rapid Estimate of Adult Literacy in Dentistry (BREALD-30). Parents answered a set of questionnaires comprising 88 items concerning sociodemographic and economic data, children's access to dental services, ora

Foetal, neonatal and child vitamin D status and enamel hypomineralization.

OBJECTIVES: Recent literature suggested that higher vitamin D concentrations in childhood are associated with a lower prevalence of molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH). As tooth development already starts in utero, we aimed to study whether vitamin D status during foetal, postnatal and childhood periods is associated with the presence of hypomineralized second primary molars (HSPMs) and/or MIH at the age of six. METHODS: Our study was embedded in the Generation R Study, a population-based, prospective cohort from foetal life onwards in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. HSPMs and MIH were scored

Challenges in conducting multicentre, multidisciplinary, longitudinal studies in children with chronic conditions.

OBJECTIVES: Conducting longitudinal, multicentre, multidisciplinary research for individuals with chronic conditions can be challenging. Despite careful planning, investigative teams must adapt to foreseen and unforeseen problems. Our objective is to identify challenges encountered and solutions sought in a recently completed observational, longitudinal study of youth with cleft lip and palate as well as their caregivers. METHODS: Data for analysis were derived from a 6-year, multicentre, prospective, longitudinal study of youth with cleft conducted from 2009 to 2015 that examined oral health

Occurrence of signs of osteoarthritis/arthrosis in the temporomandibular joint on panoramic radiographs in Swedish women.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence and incidence of radiographic signs of osteoarthritis/osteoarthrosis (OA) in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) among middle-aged and older women. METHODS: Data were collected from ongoing representative, longitudinal and repeated cross-sectional studies in Gothenburg, Sweden. Panoramic radiographs (PAN) have been taken regularly since 1968. The cohorts were systematically selected from the female population at the ages of 38, 50, 62 and 74. Condylar alterations indicative of OA (flattening/osteophyte/erosion) were evaluated in a total of 5234 PANs by on

Gingival recession and oral health-related quality of life: a population-based cross-sectional study in Brazil.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the association between gingival recession (GR) and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in a Brazilian population of adults. METHODS: A representative sample from Porto Alegre city was drawn in 2011 using a multistage probability sampling strategy. For this study, 740 individuals, 35-59 years of age and with ≥6 teeth, were included. GR was assessed by two calibrated examiners at four sites in all present teeth. The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) was used to assess OHRQoL. OHIP-14 was dichotomized using 'fairly often' as the cutoff point for a negative impa

The information filter: how dentists use diet diary information to give patients clear and simple advice.

OBJECTIVES: Diet diaries are recommended for dentists to monitor children's sugar consumption. Diaries provide multifaceted dietary information, but patients respond better to simpler advice. We explore how dentists integrate information from diet diaries to deliver useable advice to patients. METHODS: As part of a questionnaire study of general dental practitioners (GDPs) in Northwest England, we asked dentists to specify the advice they would give a hypothetical patient based upon a diet diary case vignette. A sequential mixed method approach was used for data analysis: an initial inductive

Occupational radiation procedures and doses in South Korean dentists.

OBJECTIVES: Dentistry is among the occupations involving chronic exposure to ionizing radiation. Although several cohort studies on medical radiation workers have been conducted in some countries, only a few epidemiological studies on dentists have been performed to examine occupational radiation exposure worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate occupational characteristics and radiation exposures in South Korean dentists. METHODS: A total of 658 dentists were surveyed from April 2012 to May 2013, and survey data were linked with dosimetry data from the National Dose Registry. Mult

Adverse birth outcomes and childhood caries: a cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between adverse birth outcomes and dental caries in primary teeth. METHODS: This study included children in Khon Kaen, Thailand, who participated in the Prospective Cohort Study of Thai Children. Preterm was defined as a birth at <37 weeks gestation, low birthweight (LBW) as birthweight <2500 g, and small-for-gestational age (SGA) as birthweight <10th percentile of expected weight for gestational age. Two calibrated dentists measured dental caries in primary teeth when the children were 3-4 years old using decayed, missing and filled surfaces (dmfs) inde

The amount of care delivered: challenges of indices in oral health studies.

OBJECTIVES: Untreated dental caries is the most prevalent medical condition worldwide, with considerable variations in prevalence between regions and countries. The care index (CI) and the restorative index (RI) are generally used to make comparisons between and within countries of levels of care delivered. However, several methodological challenges can be identified that limit the interpretation and comparison of these indices. The objective of this manuscript was to evaluate these challenges and to provide solutions. METHODS: Five challenges were identified: (i) the comparability of CI and

Preventive dental visiting: a critical interpretive synthesis of theory explaining how inequalities arise.

BACKGROUND: In many countries, those with lower socioeconomic status are disproportionately affected by poor oral health. This can be attributed, at least in part, to differences in preventive dental visiting. While several theories have been applied to the area, they generally fail to capture the recursive nature of dental visiting behaviour, and fall short of informing the design of complex interventions to tackle inequalities. OBJECTIVE: To undertake a systematic review and synthesis of theory in order to provide an overview of the pathways which bring about socioeconomic inequalities in e

Experience of childhood abuse and later number of remaining teeth in older Japanese: a life-course study from Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study project.

OBJECTIVES: From a life-course perspective, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) such as childhood abuse are known risk factors for adult diseases and death throughout life. ACEs could also cause poor dental health in later life because they could induce poor dental health in childhood, initiate unhealthy behaviors, and lower immune and physiological functions. However, it is not known whether ACEs have a longitudinal adverse effect on dental health in older age. This study aimed to investigate the association between experience of childhood abuse until the age of 18 and current number of rema

Factors attributable for the prevalence of dental caries in Queensland children.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is a multifactorial condition, prevention of which requires comprehensive understanding of both contextual and compositional determinants and their population impact. AIMS: To investigate contextual and compositional factors associated with the prevalence of dental caries in children and to estimate the population impact of those factors. METHODS: Children in one Australian state were selected through stratified random sampling selection in 2010-2011. Oral epidemiological examinations provided individual-level outcomes: prevalence of dental caries in the primary (am

Determinants of physical and mental health complaints in dentists: a systematic review.

Occupational determinants of ill health in dentists were systematically reviewed in literature. The methodological quality of the studies was evaluated. Studies were included if they evaluated health-related risk factors in dental practice by means of quantitative methods and statistical analysis of collected data. Despite all the factors affecting dentists' physical and mental health, evidence of the predictive value of all these risk factors remains scarce. More than one-third (37%) of the studies appraised were found to be low quality research (weak or invalid). Results from studies investi

Water fluoridation, dentition status and bone health of older people in Ireland.

OBJECTIVE: To examine some of the potential benefits and risks of water fluoridation for older adults. METHODS: This study used 'The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing', to access a nationally representative sample of 4977 people aged 50 and older. The sample was used to estimate associations between the percentage of households in a respondent's local area with a currently fluoridated water supply and the probability of two binary outcomes: the respondent having all their own teeth and having normal bone density. Past exposure of individuals to fluoridated water was not assessed; the prevale
