Community-Based Mental Health and Substance Use Services for People Leaving Prison: Equity and Inclusion Strengths and Limitations in Specialized Service Inventory Development.

Community reentry from prison is a challenging process, especially for persons with lived and living experience of mental health concerns. Access to appropriate community-based care for those leaving prison is a key part of improving health equity for this population. Our work to develop a cross-Canada inventory of active community mental health and substance use services for criminal justice-involved persons represents a valuable example for others hoping to conduct projects that are similar in nature and scope. We describe the strengths and limitations of our health equity-informed, multi-pr

Bridging Psychosocial Service Gaps in Rural Communities through Library Social Work.

Library social work is an emerging field. In rural communities, where resources and infrastructure are often limited, public libraries serve as vital community hubs. However, little is known about rural contexts, particularly community needs and librarians' experiences. This study explored rural residents' perspectives on libraries and librarians' experiences in addressing their community's psychosocial needs. The authors used mixed-methods data from a large project aimed at developing a social service model for rural libraries. As part of this project, the authors conducted a statewide survey

Improving local health through community health workers in Cambodia: challenges and solutions.

BACKGROUND: Volunteer community health workers (CHWs) are an important link between the public health system and the community. The 'Community Participation Policy for Health' in Cambodia identifies CHWs as key to local health promotion and as a critical link between district health centres and the community. However, research on the challenges CHWs face and identifying what is required to optimise their performance is limited in the Cambodian context. This research explores the views of CHWs in rural Cambodia, on the challenges they face when implementing health initiatives. METHODS: Qualita

Trust, respect, and training: Principles of care for service professionals supporting adults with intellectual disabilities in community residential programs.

Adults with intellectual disabilities in community residential programs receive services from direct support professionals (DSPs) intended to facilitate community engagement. As part of a rate study for Washington State's Developmental Disabilities Administration on community residential services, adults in these programs were asked to provide their perspective on the quality and effectiveness of their care. Twenty-five adults with intellectual disabilities were interviewed focusing on daily activities, staffing, and living situations. Interview transcripts were coded and analyzed for dominant

Mediating factors for the long-term effects of parental alcoholism in women: the contribution of other childhood stresses and resources.

The primary aim of this study was to identify the stresses and resources in childhood that mediate the relationship between parental alcoholism and adult outcomes in women. Adult outcomes included alcohol problems and measures of psychosocial adjustment. Standardized measures and a face-to-face interview were used to collect data on 290 community-dwelling women, with siblings as collateral informants. Mediation analysis showed that the effect of parental alcoholism on several adult outcomes was indirect, mediated by the other stresses and resources examined. Contextual models such as those pre

Implementation process and acceptability of the electronic community health information system among community health workers in Kenya.

INTRODUCTION: The electronic Community Health Information System (eCHIS) is a mobile health technology that was scaled nationally to community health workers (CHWs) in Kenya beginning in 2023. Since the rapid scale up, reports on eCHIS uptake show varying adoption rates. The overall purpose of this study was to assess the relationships between implementation process and acceptability of eCHIS by CHWs in Kenya. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 5 counties in Kenya with 310 CHWs (40 community health assistants and 270 community health promoters) selected through convenience stra

The Grief Navigation Trial: A multi-site pragmatic comparative effectiveness trial of two interventions to support parents after their child's unexpected or traumatic death.

BACKGROUND: In the US, ~60,000 people <25 years old die annually. Forty-five percent of pediatric deaths occur traumatically, and the parents' or caregivers' (hereafter 'parents') sole contact with the healthcare system is often the coroner or medical examiner (ME). Parents experience mental and physical health problems following their child's death. There are no evidence-based interventions for MEs supporting bereaved parents. Scalable, systems-level interventions are needed to connect bereaved parents to grief and social care support. This research will build upon the experience of Missing P

Menstruating while homeless: navigating access to products, spaces, and services.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) in the United States face substantial challenges related to menstruation, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Limited access to period products, heightened stigma, and gynecological challenges contribute to increased hardships for PEH, highlighting the need for improved services and policies to address period equity and overall well-being for this vulnerable population. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with PEH (n = 12) and community healthcare and social service providers (e.g., case managers, shelter directors,

Building community resilience: The City of Victoria's approach to climate change adaptation and extreme heat response.

The Pacific Northwest heat dome of 2021 exposed the need for increased planning and response measures by local governments, and the value of collaboration in preparedness, planning and response to extreme heat events. Recognising that extreme heat is becoming an increasingly significant threat, the City of Victoria has taken steps to improve its response to future events with a focus on developing strategies that provide resources and support to those most vulnerable in the community. The Province of British Columbia and regional health authorities have since provided crucial direction, resour

Improving access to quality contraceptive counselling in community pharmacy: examining the knowledge, attitudes and practices of community pharmacists in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Across most of Australia, the role of community pharmacists in contraceptive care has been unchanged since 2004. To understand their current scope of practice and potential for practice advancements, we examined community pharmacists' contraceptive knowledge and their attitudes, practices and perceived barriers to and benefits of contraceptive counselling provision. METHODS: A nationwide postal survey was conducted between September and December 2020. We contacted a state/territory-stratified sample of 2149 community pharmacies and limited eligibility to one pharmacist per pharmac

Qualitative exploration of why people repeatedly attend emergency departments for alcohol-related reasons.

BACKGROUND: Understanding why people repeatedly attend Emergency Departments (EDs) for alcohol-related reasons is an important prerequisite to identifying ways of reducing any unnecessary demands on hospital resources. We use Andersen's Behavioural Model of Health Services Use to explore factors that contributed to repeat ED attendances. METHODS: Qualitative interviews were conducted with 30 people who repeatedly attended EDs for alcohol-related reasons (≥10 attendances in the past 12 months). We recruited participants from 6 EDs in London, United Kingdom. Data on socio-demographic characteri

Screening offenders with histories of mental illness and violence for supportive housing.

This article describes a community mental health agency's process of screening supportive housing applicants with histories of violent felonies and serious mental illness. The agency adopted its corporate intranet as a tool so that geographically dispersed senior staff could participate in information gathering in order to ensure expert input in admissions decisions. This broad-based participation was designed to maintain community safety, while making the agency's residential resources available to people with mental illness and criminal histories. Considering the high recidivism rate of ex-o

Applying Principles of Community-Engaged Research.

Community-engaged research (CEnR) is a participatory approach that foregrounds community priorities and applies research results to community action. CEnR embodies shared decision-making by including community partners' values, preferences, and experiences within the research process. CEnR projects can help medical student learners acquire skills in conducting needs assessments and more fully appreciate the social determinants of health and challenges faced by communities. CEnR does not prescribe specific methods for addressing research questions. Rather, it is a collaborative approach with co
