The Implications of Health Disparities: A COVID-19 Risk Assessment of the Hispanic Community in El Paso.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, Latinos have suffered from disproportionately high rates of hospitalization and death related to the virus. Health disparities based on race and ethnicity are directly associated with heightened mortality and burden of illness and act as underlying causes for the staggering impacts of COVID-19 in Latin communities in the United States. This is especially true in the city of El Paso, Texas, where over 82% of the population is Hispanic. To ascertain the level of danger that COVID-19 poses in El Paso, we constructed a point-in-time

Compensatory Effects of Long-Term Care Insurance on Mental Health Among Rural Older Women: Evidence from China.

Background: Rural older women in China face intersecting disadvantages including eroded family support, limited pension coverage, and high social isolation that elevate depressive symptoms. Although Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) has expanded rapidly since 2016 to provide both financial protection and formal care services for older adults, whether it can compensate for depleted informal support and protect mental health among this vulnerable population remains unknown. Methods: We used five waves of CHARLS (2011-2020) with 2193 rural women aged ≥60. We employed a staggered difference-in-diffe

Implementation of a community pharmacy-based pre-exposure prophylaxis service: a novel model for pre-exposure prophylaxis care.

UNLABELLED: Background National guidelines for the provision of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to reduce a person's risk of acquiring HIV were made available in 2014. We created a pharmacist-managed HIV PrEP clinic in a community pharmacy setting at Kelley-Ross Pharmacy in Seattle, WA, USA. METHODS: The clinic operates under a collaborative drug therapy agreement based on these guidelines. This allows pharmacists to initiate and manage tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine under the supervision of a physician medical director. RESULTS: Between March 2015 and February 2018, 714 pat

Qualitatively exploring opportunities and challenges for sexually transmitted infection prevention aimed at Canadian international retirement migrants wintering in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Older populations globally are experiencing a rise in sexually transmitted infections, and those who travel internationally and engage in unsafe sex practices are particularly at risk. International retirement migrants, who live abroad for extended periods each year, pose unique challenges for public health efforts to prevent, track, control, and treat these infections. To date, no research has examined the specific opportunities and challenges for sexually transmitted infection prevention among Canadian international retirement migrants who winter in the United States. This study

Neighbourhood Deprivation Is Associated With Greater Mortality in Patients With Alcohol-Associated Liver Disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Significant health disparities persist in alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), largely driven by social determinants of health (SDOH). However, the influence of neighbourhood-level SDOH on ALD outcomes remains underexplored. In this study, we aimed to evaluate how neighbourhood-level SDOH are associated with disease burden, comorbid conditions, and mortality in individuals with ALD. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients with ALD in the Banner Health System, representing hospitals across Arizona, California, Nevada, Wyoming and Colorado, from Jan

Association of racial discrimination in health care settings and use of electronic cigarettes to quit smoking among Black adults.

INTRODUCTION: Black people are disproportionately burdened by tobacco-related diseases and are less successful at cigarette cessation with current treatments. We know little about the effectiveness of e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation method compared to currently approved methods in Black adults who smoke. Many Black adults report experiencing racial discrimination in health care, but if discrimination is related to utilization of smoking cessation aids including e-cigarettes and success with smoking cessation in this population is unclear. Therefore, this exploratory study aimed to understa

Assessing the Impact of a Culturally Congruent Perinatal Home-Visiting Program on Gestational Age at Delivery for Black Women.

PURPOSE: There is a Black maternal health crisis in America, with significant racial disparities in birth outcomes for Black women in Washington, DC. Programs designed to reduce these inequities must intentionally address the role of systemic racism and the ongoing legacy of oppression that is endemic to traditional perinatal care services. This article describes the findings from the quantitative analysis of an innovative perinatal program (Mothers Rising) designed by and for Black women in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area that was part of a larger mixed methods study. METHODS: Using da

Latent Tuberculosis Infection Beliefs and Testing and Treatment Health Behaviors Amongst Non-US-Born South Asians in New Jersey: A Cross-Sectional Community Survey.

Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) remains a problem in the United States as reactivation leads to active TB disease particularly in persons with risk factors. The objective of this study is to assess the knowledge, attitudes and health behaviors related to testing and treatment of LTBI among non-US-born South Asians (SA) in New Jersey (NJ). A cross-sectional, community-based survey was the primary tool for gathering data. Eligibility criteria included being at least 18 years of age, self-identifying as SA, verbal consent for participation, and birth in a high TB endemic country. A hardcopy

Effects of social deprivation on risk factors for suicidal ideation and suicide attempts in commercially insured US youth and adults.

We used US nationwide commercial insurance claims data (2011-2015) to study the effect of social deprivation on clinical and demographic risk factors for suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SA) among US youth and adults < 65 years, after having a mental health or substance use disorder-related outpatient encounter. Neighborhood social deprivation level was summarized by the quintile of social deprivation index (SDI) at individuals' zip code level. Cox proportional hazard models were used to evaluate the effect of social deprivation on demographic and clinical risk factors for SI and S

Limited uptake of hepatitis C treatment among injection drug users.

We characterized hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment knowledge, experience and barriers in a cohort of community-based injection drug users (IDUs) in Baltimore, MD. In 2005, a questionnaire on HCV treatment knowledge, experience and barriers was administered to HCV-infected IDUs. Self-reported treatment was confirmed from medical records. Of 597 participants, 71% were male, 95% African-American, 31% HIV co-infected and 94% were infected with HCV genotype 1; 70% were aware that treatment was available, but only 22% understood that HCV could be cured. Of 418 who had heard of treatment, 86 (21%) re

Urban-rural health disparity among patients with chronic kidney disease: a cross-sectional community-based study from 2012 to 2019.

OBJECTIVES: The incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing owing to the ageing population, resulting in an increased demand for dialysis and kidney transplantation, which can be costly. Current research lacks clarity regarding the relationship between residence setting and CKD prevalence or its related risk factors. This study explored the urban-rural disparities in CKD prevalence and risk factors in Taiwan. Our findings will aid the understanding of the distribution of CKD and the design of more effective prevention programmes. DESIGN: This cross-sectional community-based study
