Using the hemolytic complement (CH50) assay, we evaluated the complement system of 28 children with severe protein calorie malnutrition (PCM) during their hospital admission and recovery. The mean CH50 activity in children with kwashiorkor was significantly less on hospital days 1 and 4 than in 17 healthy control subjects. On day 8 it rose to normal, and by day 50 it was significantly higher than the controls. The diagnosis of bovine brucellosis using PCR in blood and milk samples from two dairy herds were compared to in vitro isolation, complement fixation test (CF), competitive ELISA (C-ELISA) in serum, and indirect ELISA (I-ELISA) in milk. On five newly established large goat farms the incidence of antibodies to some chronic and latent infections (arthritis and encephalitis, Q-fever, caseous lymphadenitis and toxoplazmosis) was investigated in the first six months of the year 1994. Four technics were compared to find the most suitable screening test for the cytomegalovirus (CMV) antibody status in blood donors. One hundred thirty-five donor samples were tested by two enzyme immunoassays, EIA(Litton) and EIA(Abbott), and by latex agglutination (LA) and complement fixation (CF). The seroreactivity of the tests were judged by concordance of three or more methods. The authors found that the test performance of the EIA(Litton) could be improved with adjustment of sample color variation, which increased the test sensitivity and specificity from 48.8% and 87.2% to 83.8% and 96.

Results using homogenate antigens of Rhizomucor pusillus against immunized rabbit sera, mouse ascites fluid and sera from mucormycotic-infected mice, detected by immunodiffusion and complement fixation assays are presented. In sheep, low complement fixation (CP) and passive haemagglutinating (PH) auto-antibody titres increased after primary and challenge infections with F hepatica, possibly to aid removal of tissue debris. Although the CF auto-antibodies were neither organ nor species specific and cross precipitating activity could be detected between sheep liver, kidney, lung and cattle and human livers with heterologous hyperimmune whole sheep liver anti-serum, sheep mitochondria do appear to contain an organ and species specific pH antigen.
