A method for the inference of cytokine interaction networks.

Cell-cell communication is mediated by many soluble mediators, including over 40 cytokines. Cytokines, e.g. TNF, IL1β, IL5, IL6, IL12 and IL23, represent important therapeutic targets in immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs), such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), psoriasis, asthma, rheumatoid and juvenile arthritis. The identification of cytokines that are causative drivers of, and not just associated with, inflammation is fundamental for selecting therapeutic targets that should be studied in clinical trials. As in vitro models of cytokine interactions provide a simplified framewo

Remote Assessment of Parkinson Disease Using Deep Learning on Structured Mouse-Trace Data From Suspected Cases: Machine-Learning Pilot Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson disease (PD) is a pervasive neurodegenerative disorder globally, largely characterized by motor symptoms. Most existing artificial intelligence models for PD detection are trained on participants in well-resourced settings with confirmed clinical diagnoses. However, specialist-confirmed labels are often infeasible in low-resource settings. OBJECTIVE: We developed a web platform for structured mouse data collection through pattern tracing tests. We sought to assess the feasibility of leveraging data from a community-recruited sample of participants with suspected but undi

Risk factors for chronic rejection in pediatric renal allograft recipients.

To determine the risk factors predictive of graft loss from chronic rejection in pediatric renal allograft recipients, we reviewed the collaborative study database of the Société de Néphrologie Pédiatrique which registered 314 grafts from January 1987 to December 1991. Of the 289 grafts analyzed, 71 failed during follow-up, chronic rejection being the most common cause of graft loss (35%). The clinical features of the chronic rejection group (n = 25) were compared with those of the group without failure (n = 218). The variables tested by monovariate analysis were cyclosporine dose at 1 year, d

Decoding host-microbiome interactions through integrative multi-omics and artificial intelligence: from biological mechanisms to predictive modelling.

The mutual communication between the human host and its microbiome plays a fundamental role in maintaining metabolic and immunological homeostasis. Disruptions in this delicate ecosystem are heavily linked to severe pathologies like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), metabolic syndromes, and cancer. Whilst traditional single-omics approaches offer limited taxonomic snapshots, multi-omics strategies are bridging the gap by mapping the complex, multi-layered networks driving host-microbe interactions. However, integrating these highly dimensional, heterogeneous datasets creates significant comput

Viewpoint on Hierarchical Organization of Multisensory Integration and Segregation.

In this viewpoint, Christoph Kayser, Uta Noppeney, and Tim Rohe highlight the central role of normative Bayesian frameworks, in particular Bayesian causal inference, for explaining how the brain decides whether sensory signals should be integrated or segregated and how they are weighted by their reliabilities. In parallel, the Multisensory Correlation Detector model is emphasized as a mechanistic proposal for how the brain computes spatial and temporal relations across sensory channels. Together, these developments have shifted the field from merely locating multisensory processing in the brai

Enhancing Autism Detection Through Gaze Analysis Using Eye Tracking Sensors and Data Attribution with Distillation in Deep Neural Networks.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by differences in social communication and repetitive behaviors, often associated with atypical visual attention patterns. In this paper, the Gaze-Based Autism Classifier (GBAC) is proposed, which is a Deep Neural Network model that leverages both data distillation and data attribution techniques to enhance ASD classification accuracy and explainability. Using data sampled by eye tracking sensors, the model identifies unique gaze behaviors linked to ASD and applies an explainability technique called TracIn for data

Mapping connectivity damage in the case of Phineas Gage.

White matter (WM) mapping of the human brain using neuroimaging techniques has gained considerable interest in the neuroscience community. Using diffusion weighted (DWI) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), WM fiber pathways between brain regions may be systematically assessed to make inferences concerning their role in normal brain function, influence on behavior, as well as concerning the consequences of network-level brain damage. In this paper, we investigate the detailed connectomics in a noted example of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) which has proved important to and controversial

IoT Based System for Heart Monitoring and Arrhythmia Detection Using Machine Learning.

Internet of Things (IoT) technologies allow building a digital representation of people, objects, or physical phenomena to be available on the Internet. Thus, stakeholders can access this information from remote places or computational systems could analyze this data to find patterns, make decisions, or execute actions. For instance, a doctor could diagnose patients by analyzing the received data from an IoT system even when patients are located in a remote place. This article proposes an IoT system for monitoring electrocardiogram (ECG) signal and processing heart data in order to generate an

SCTGE infers transformer-based graph embeddings to improve cell-cell interaction identification and cell identity annotations.

Single-cell transcriptomic data analysis faces challenges in deciphering spatial embeddings due to high dimensionality, noise, and limitations in existing computational frameworks. Existing studies highlight the transformative potential of graph-based models in revealing hidden biological insights by integrating diverse single-cell data, while acknowledging ongoing challenges in scalability and computational efficiency that drive research to optimize these architectures and improve their graph-specific operations. Here, we introduce SCTGE (Single-Cell Transformer-based Graph Embeddings), a nov

Learning signs with NAO: humanoid robot as a tool for helping to learn Colombian Sign Language.

Sign languages are one of the main rehabilitation methods for dealing with hearing loss. Like any other language, the geographical location will influence on how signs are made. Particularly in Colombia, the hard of hearing population is lacking from education in the Colombian Sign Language, mainly due of the reduce number of interpreters in the educational sector. To help mitigate this problem, Machine Learning binded to data gloves or Computer Vision technologies have emerged to be the accessory of sign translation systems and educational tools, however, in Colombia the presence of this solu

Anti-Ebola: an initiative to predict Ebola virus inhibitors through machine learning.

Ebola virus is a deadly pathogen responsible for a frequent series of outbreaks since 1976. Despite various efforts from researchers worldwide, its mortality and fatality are quite high. For antiviral drug discovery, the computational efforts are considered highly useful. Therefore, we have developed an 'anti-Ebola' web server, through quantitative structure-activity relationship information of available molecules with experimental anti-Ebola activities. Three hundred and five unique anti-Ebola compounds with their respective IC50 values were extracted from the 'DrugRepV' database. Later, the

Exploring spiking neural networks for deep reinforcement learning in robotic tasks.

Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) stand as the third generation of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), mirroring the functionality of the mammalian brain more closely than their predecessors. Their computational units, spiking neurons, characterized by Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs), allow for dynamic system representation, with spikes serving as the medium for asynchronous communication among neurons. Due to their inherent ability to capture input dynamics, SNNs hold great promise for deep networks in Reinforcement Learning (RL) tasks. Deep RL (DRL), and in particular Proximal Policy Opti

Diatoms Are Selective Segregators in Global Ocean Planktonic Communities.

Diatoms are a major component of phytoplankton, believed to be responsible for around 20% of the annual primary production on Earth. As abundant and ubiquitous organisms, they are known to establish biotic interactions with many other members of plankton. Through analyses of cooccurrence networks derived from the Tara Oceans expedition that take into account both biotic and abiotic factors in shaping the spatial distributions of species, we show that only 13% of diatom pairwise associations are driven by environmental conditions; the vast majority are independent of abiotic factors. In contras

An investigative network analysis mapping global cancer epidemiology.

Cancer incidence is influenced by a combination of extrinsic and genetic factors. We hypothesized that cancers with similar incidence patterns may suggest shared etiologies. Age-standardized incidence rates for 36 cancer types across 185 countries were obtained from GLOBOCAN 2022. Pairwise Spearman's correlation coefficients were computed, and network clustering analyses were performed using six community detection algorithms: Leiden, Surprise, Walktrap, Girvan-Newman, Infomap, and spectral clustering. A dominant cluster was consistently identified, comprising kidney, pancreatic, colorectal, a

A Smart Visual Sensor for Smoke Detection Based on Deep Neural Networks.

The automatic detection of smoke by analyzing the video stream acquired by traditional surveillance cameras is becoming a more and more interesting problem for the scientific community thanks to the necessity to prevent fires at the very early stages. The adoption of a smart visual sensor, namely a computer vision algorithm running in real time, allows one to overcome the limitations of standard physical sensors. Nevertheless, this is a very challenging problem, due to the strong similarity of the smoke with other environmental elements like clouds, fog and dust. In addition to this challenge,
