Factors associated with condom use among young Denver inner city women.

BACKGROUND: Despite the availability of condoms and theoretically based interventions to promote their use, sexually active women aged 15 to 25 years continue to put themselves at risk for sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancy. METHODS: One hundred ninety-eight inner city women were interviewed about knowledge and attitudes about condoms. Using the Transtheoretical Model, regression techniques were used to identify factors associated with condom use at last sex and the proportion of acts protected by a condom in the last 90 days. RESULTS: Constructs including intention to us…

Determinants of condom use stage of change among heterosexually-identified methamphetamine users.

There is a paucity of research on the association between methamphetamine use (meth) and sexual risk behavior among heterosexual meth users. This study used a multiple theories approach to identify factors associated with stage of change for condom use in a sample of 181 HIV-negative, heterosexually identified meth users. Background characteristics, drug use variables, and theoretical mechanism of change variables were examined in relation to Prochaska's contemplative and preparation stages of change. Sexual risk behavior was highest among those in the contemplation stage of change. When compa

The female condom: attitudes and experiences among HIV-positive heterosexual women and men.

The female condom is a potentially effective method for the prevention of HIV, other sexually transmitted disease, and pregnancy. This study describes attitudes toward and experiences with the female condom of 89 HIV-positive individuals (n = 56 women; n = 33 men) reporting heterosexual behavior. Qualitative interviews were conducted to inform the design and implementation of a cognitive-behavioral risk-reduction and health-promotion intervention. Most respondents (n = 78) had seen or heard of the female condom. However, relatively few (n = 14 women; n = 5 men) had used it at least once. React

Effectiveness of an intervention promoting the female condom to patients at sexually transmitted disease clinics.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated a behavioral intervention designed to promote female condoms and reduce unprotected sex among women at high risk for acquiring sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). METHODS: The effect of the intervention on barrier use was evaluated with a pretest-posttest design with 1159 female STD clinic patients. RESULTS: Among participants with follow-up data, 79% used the female condom at least once and often multiple times. More than one third of those who completed the study used female condoms throughout follow-up. Use of barrier protection increased significantly a…

Female condom use among women at high risk of sexually transmitted disease.

CONTEXT: Whereas the female condom has been evaluated in many hypothetical acceptability or short-term use studies, there is little information about its suitability for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or HIV over extended periods of time. METHODOLOGY: As part of a six-month prospective follow-up study of 1,159 STD clinic patients, clients were interviewed during their initial visit, exposed to a behavioral intervention promoting condoms, given a physical examination and provided with instructions on completing a sexual diary. Potential predictors of trying the female c…

Acceptability evaluation of a natural rubber latex, a polyurethane, and a new non-latex condom.

After more than a century of reliance on latex condoms, male condoms fabricated from new materials are finally becoming commercially available to consumers. This study was an open label acceptability study that compared three lubricated condom products during vaginal intercourse: a natural rubber latex condom, a polyurethane condom, and a new non-latex (styrene ethylene butylene styrene, SEBS) condom. Fifty-four couples who were using condoms for birth control were enrolled in this three-way crossover study. Each couple tested three condoms of each type in a randomized sequence. Couples report…

Facilitators and barriers to use of the female condom: qualitative interviews with women of diverse ethnicity.

Women in the United States, particularly African-Americans and Hispanics, are at increased risk for HIV. The female condom now offers women a potentially important option for HIV prevention, yet few efforts have been made to increase its use. To elucidate strategies to promote the use of the female condom, we conducted in-depth interviews with 62 women recruited from the four major racial/ethnic groups of the U.S. (African-American, Asian-American, Hispanic, and white). Subject recruitment took place at a family planning clinic in San Francisco during 1996-97. We identified four major types of

A comparison of the determinants of safe injecting and condom use among injecting drug users.

A sample of 582 injecting drug users were interviewed as part of an evaluation of an AIDS prevention programme for drug users. This paper examines the biographic and predispositional determinants of five HIV preventive behaviours--equipment sharing (not receiving and not giving) and and condom use (with regular partners, casual partners and sex clients). A two-stage sequential approach was adopted for a logistic regression analysis. Initially, to model each of the five preventive behaviours, biographical and drug use variables were entered. In a second set of models, behavioural predisposition

Penile oedema induced by continuous condom catheter use and mimicking keloid scar.

Continuous use of condom catheter for urinary incontinence in a patient with neurogenic bladder gave rise to localized chronic oedema on the dorsum of the penis, mimicking keloid scar, and urethral fistula on the ventral surface. These unusual combined complications on the penile surfaces were due to pressure effect.

Condom use and sexual habits of heterosexual intravenous drug users in northern Italy.

In order to assess modes of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission from heterosexual intravenous drug users (IVDUs) to their partners, condom use and sexual habits with both steady and occasional partners were investigated. A total of 349 heterosexual IVDUs (247 men and 102 women) who ignored, at the time of interview, their HIV serostatus were interviewed. Respondents were asked for information on condom use and sexual habits for the three year period prior to the interview. Nearly 40% of IVDUs reported sexual intercourse with both steady partners and occasional partners. Fifty-four

Preventing AIDS and other STDs through condom promotion: a patient education intervention.

We report on two studies that assessed the impact of a soap-opera style videotape on inner-city STD (sexually transmitted disease) patients' knowledge about and attitudes toward condom use, and willingness to redeem coupons for free condoms. Subjects in the first study who viewed the videotape (and participated in a brief oral recall session) had higher knowledge scores and more accepting attitudes than subjects who did not (knowledge test means of 11.1 versus 7.9, attitude index means of 13.0 versus 11.3). The intervention was most effective among those who were relatively poorly educated and…

Characteristics and Mental Health Correlates of Nonconsensual Condom Removal Among Undergraduate Students.

Nonconsensual condom removal (NCCR), the removal of a condom during sexual activity without consent, is a common yet underrecognized form of sexual violence that occurs within broader systems of power, identity, and structural inequity. Although prior research links NCCR victimization to emotional distress, research examining identity-based disparities and a broader range of mental health correlates is needed. Among a sample of sexually active college students (N = 977), we investigated the prevalence of NCCR victimization and its association with gender and minoritized racial/ethnic and sexua
