The association of malignant hyperthermia (MH) with neuromuscular disorders has been recognized since 1970. These disorders include central core disease, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, myotonia congenita, myotonic dystrophy, nonspecific myopathies, and King-Denborough syndrome. Ninety-five Patients with Dupuytren's contracture, treated by partial (subtotal) aponeurectomy, have been evaluated retrospectively from various points of view. The immediate postoperative status and the results one to five years later were compared. The authors establish that Dupuytren's contracture can be treated with very favourable effect, but the good results deteriorate later due to recurrence. Conventional radiotherapy is the treatment of choice for the early stages of the Dupuytren contracture. The conventional semi-deep therapy is more favorable than the soft ray technique and the moulage technique. 62 patients have been treated at Erlangen; 33 out of them (46 irradiated hands) with a minimum observation time of 18 months have been evaluated. The incidence of Sudeck-like complications after surgery for Dupuytren's contracture is discussed. In a series of 209 operations for Dupuytren's contracture some complications were observed in 26 cases. In 12 patients these complications could not be precisely explained. In the author's opinion they may illustrate the creation of a nerve-irritating source within the operative field. Another case of flexion contracture in a 60 year-old patient with hypopituitarism, chronic alcoholism and starvation is reported. The contracture, as in the other cases, involved the lower limbs, but in this particular patient it extended to the abdominal and extensor neck muscles and neurological signs were associated: cerebellar atrophy and peripheral neuropathy of the lower limbs probably due to alcoholism. The relationship between contracture (a rise in resting tension at constant length) and contractile activity was studied in isometric rat trabeculae carneae and cat right ventricular papillary muscles. Muscles at Lmax were paced at 12/min in solutions equilibrated at 29 degrees C with 95% O2-5% CO2. In rat myocardium, exposure to 60 min hypoxia (95% N2-5% CO2) at alkalotic pH produced contracture.
