Coralline hydroxyapatite bone graft substitutes in a canine diaphyseal defect model: radiographic features of failed and successful union.

Radiographic and densitometric evaluation of a new type of bone graft substitute derived from reef-building sea coral via a hydrothermal chemical exchange process was undertaken in a canine diaphyseal defect model. Comparably sized blocks of this material and autogenous iliac cortical-cancellous graft were implanted into the respective radial diaphyses of seven dogs. Qualitative and quantitative radiographic assessment was performed during the immediate postoperative period and at 3 months following surgery. Significant complications were observed radiographically in over half of the coralline

Numerical environmental impact assessment of accidental release of ammonia during bunkering in the Singapore Strait.

Ammonia is a promising maritime fuel for decarbonization, but its impact on marine environments is less understood. This study uses a high-resolution numerical model to examine the short-term (from hours to days) effects of ammonia releases during bunkering in Singapore - one of the world's busiest ports. Results show that nearshore shallow-water jetties experience more localized but longer-lasting impacts than open seas due to limited mixing. High discharge volumes exacerbate toxicity, highlighting the need for rapid containment; multi-hose systems with low flow rates are recommended. A dimen

Reversed sex change by widowed males in polygynous and protogynous fishes: female removal experiments in the field.

Sex change, either protogyny (female to male) or protandry (male to female), is well known among fishes, but evidence of bidirectional sex change or reversed sex change in natural populations is still very limited. This is the first report on female removal experiments for polygnous and protogynous fish species to induce reversed sex change in the widowed males in the field. We removed all of the females and juveniles from the territories of dominant males in the cleaner wrasse Labroides dimidiatus (Labridae) and the rusty angelfish Centropyge ferrugata (Pomacanthidae) on the coral reefs of Ok

Genetic diversity of Ostreopsis ovata (Dinophyceae) from Malaysia.

The genus Ostreopsis is an important component of benthic and epiphytic dinoflagellate assemblages in coral reefs and seaweed beds of Malaysia. Members of the species may produce toxins that contribute to ciguatera fish poisoning. In this study, two species have been isolated and cultured, Ostreopsis ovata and Ostreopsis lenticularis. Analyses of the 5.8S subunit and internal transcribed spacer regions ITS1 and ITS2 of the ribosomal RNA gene sequences of these two species showed that they are separate species, consistent with morphological designations. The nucleotide sequences of the 5.8S sub

Rapid wound healing in a reef manta ray masks the extent of vessel strike.

Increasing vessel traffic in the marine environment due to commercial and recreational activities has amplified the number of conflicts with marine animals. However, there are limited multi-year observations of the healing rate of marine animals following vessel strike. Here we document the healing rate of a reef manta ray Mobula alfredi, following lacerations caused by a propeller along the pectoral fin. We demonstrate a high healing capacity, with wound length following a negative exponential curve over time. Lacerations healed to 5% of the initial wound length (i.e. 95% closure) within 295

Intraspecific competition in Tridacna crocea, a burrowing bivalve.

Intraspecific competition for space and light occurred when Tridacna crocea burrowed into coralline substratum of boulders on leeward coral reefs in the central Great Barrier Reef near Townsville, Australia. Intensity of competition was linearly related to clam density. Above about 200 clams/m2, all clams physically contacted one another and all shells sustained damage. Mortality in isolated populations due to intraspecific competition was estimated at 40%. Principles of intraspecific competition in plants were tested for applicability to T. crocea populations. Juvenile mortality due to compet

Habitat and species differences in prevalence and intensity of Neobenedenia melleni (Monogenea: Capsalidae) on sympatric Caribbean surgeonfishes (Acanthuridae).

We quantified Neobenedenia melleni from the skin of Caribbean surgeonfishes (Acanthuridae) from June through October 2005 and 2007. Prevalence, or mean intensity of infection, or both, varied significantly among the 3 species, and among sites and between years for the most heavily infected species, blue tang (Acanthurus coeruleus). Among 6 sites sampled, no more than 12% of ocean surgeonfish (Acanthurus bahianus) were infected, compared with 10 to 100% of A. coeruleus. The prevalence of infection among doctorfish (Acanthurus chirurgus), collected at only 1 of the sites, was intermediate betwee

Wash-off behaviour of seven different sunscreens assessed with a novel skin application method.

As global sunscreen use rises, UV filters are increasingly entering marine environments, particularly in touristic coastal coral reef areas, where they can harm marine organisms. Despite "water-resistant" claims, sunscreens vary widely in wash-off behaviour, affecting both user protection and environmental impact. This study investigated the wash-off behaviour of seven commercial sunscreens (ARUUN™, Cien™, Ladival™, Nivea™, Sundance™, V.Sun™ Body, V.Sun™ Face) selected based on water-resistance and ecotoxicological claims. We applied a novel, reproducible hand-application protocol simulating r

Selective assisted intravascular lithotripsy for complex aorto-iliac calcific lesions.

BackgroundIntravascular lithotripsy has proven to be safe, less invasive, and effective for coronary and peripheral arteries, and the indication has been extended to the aortic district but there is still little evidence in the literature as only a few cases have been described so far.MethodWe report a case of intravascular lithotripsy of the infrarenal aorta due to coral reef, chronic occlusion using a single Shockwave M5 + balloon, followed by a covered stent deployment. The aortic bifurcation and common iliac arteries presented hemodynamic calcific lesions, which were prepared singularly wi

The Calcified Barrier: A Rare Cause of a Distal Aortic Arch Stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Calcification of the aortic arch is common, but an intraluminal calcified plaque causing functional stenosis is rare. At the distal arch, it mimics aortic coarctation, with refractory upper-body hypertension and left ventricular pressure overload. CASE SUMMARY: A 61-year-old man presented with refractory hypertension despite 4 agents and recurrent hypertensive cardiac decompensation with an upper-to-lower-limb blood pressure gradient. Computed tomography angiography showed a high-grade calcified stenosis of the distal arch (peak gradient 70 mm Hg; left ventricular ejection fractio

Transcriptomic signatures associated with underlying rapid changes in the early phase brain of bi-directional sex change in Trimma okinawae.

Teleost fish exhibit remarkable sexual plasticity and divergent developmental systems, including sequential hermaphroditism. One of the more fascinating models of sexual plasticity is socially controlled sex change, which is often observed in coral reef fish. The Okinawa rubble goby, Trimma okinawae, is a bi-directional sex-changing fish. It can rapidly change sex in either direction based on social circumstances. Although behavioural and neuroendocrine sex change occurs immediately and is believed to trigger gonadal changes, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, w

Interpreting Risk from Sunscreens in the Marine Environment.

Recent and pending bans in specific jurisdictions of some organic ultraviolet (UV) filters have resulted in significant concern and controversy over the potential impacts of these contaminants in the marine environment. Organic UV filters have been quantified in the aquatic environment as contaminants in water, sediments, and the tissues of aquatic organisms. The limited available laboratory studies on the toxicity of UV filters to keystone marine species such as reef-building corals describe a wide variety of impacts, from significant acute effects to no observed effects. However, interpretat

Review of environmental effects of oxybenzone and other sunscreen active ingredients.

With increasing awareness regarding the risks of sunburn, photoaging, and skin cancer, the use of sunscreens has increased. Organic and inorganic filters are used in sunscreen products worldwide. Concerns have been raised regarding the environmental effects of commonly used organic ultraviolet (UV) filters, including oxybenzone (benzophenone-3), 4-methylbenzylidene camphor, octocrylene, and octinoxate (ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate). Studies have identified UV filters such as oxybenzone, octocrylene, octinoxate, and ethylhexyl salicylate in almost all water sources around the world and have comm

Adaptive Variation Amid High Gene Flow Across a Broad Latitudinal Gradient in the Reef-Building Honeycomb Worm, Sabellaria alveolata.

Climate change is already altering, and will continue to reshape, the persistence and spatial structure of marine populations. Understanding metapopulation connectivity and local adaptation is therefore critical for identifying both vulnerable populations and those with adaptive resilience. We applied a seascape genomics approach to investigate connectivity patterns and adaptive responses in the honeycomb worm, Sabellaria alveolata-an intertidal ecosystem engineer that supports high biodiversity and provides essential ecological functions. A total of 286 individuals from 17 sites spanning the

Delayed Anthropocene in the deep-sea biosphere: a last paradise soon lost?

The deep sea remains a last paradise and the place of minimal human impacts compared with other ecosystems. However, this pristine status is rapidly changing, and deep-sea human impacts have seldom been discussed in a broad context that draws comparisons with those in other ecosystems. Here, we recap the history of human-induced ecological degradation in deep-sea, shallow-marine and terrestrial ecosystems to place the deep-sea situation in a broad context. Anthropogenic terrestrial ecosystem degradation started tens of thousands of years ago. Shallow-marine ecosystem change followed that of te

A retrovirus isolated from cell lines derived from neurofibromas in bicolor damselfish (Pomacentrus partitus).

Damselfish neurofibromatosis (DNF) is a naturally occurring, neoplastic disease affecting bicolor damselfish (Pomacentrus partitus) living on coral reefs in southern Florida, USA. The disease consists of multiple neurofibromas, neurofibrosarcomas and chromatophoromas and has been proposed as an animal model for neurofibromatosis type 1 in humans. DNF is transmissible by injection of crude tumour homogenates, cell-free filtrates of homogenates or cells from tumour cell lines. An analysis of tumorigenic cell lines derived from fish with spontaneous or experimentally induced DNF revealed virus pa

Study on the Meso-Statistical Damage Constitutive Model of Coral Aggregate Seawater Concrete Incorporating Natural Aggregate Replacement Ratio Effects.

Coral aggregate seawater concrete (CASC) capitalizes on locally sourced aggregates in marine and reef engineering, enabling in situ material utilization and conferring marked benefits in curbing conventional resource consumption and construction expenditures-a combination that underpins its considerable promise for reef infrastructure development. To date, research efforts have largely been confined to macroscopic mechanical characterization and qualitative microstructural inspections, and quantitative assessments of mesoscopic damage evolution across the full loading-to-failure process remain

Development of techniques for cryopreserving giant clam larvae.

Giant clams (Tridacna spp.) are keystone reef organisms that play important ecological roles in Indo-Pacific coral reef ecosystems. However, their populations have declined substantially because of overexploitation, habitat degradation, and climate change. Cryopreservation offers a potential strategy for preserving genetic resources and supporting future conservation and restoration efforts. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of cryopreserving D-stage larvae of Tridacna crocea and T. maxima using a two-step freezing protocol. The effects of different cryoprotectants, concentrations, a

Marine Organisms from the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) as a Potential Natural Source of Antibacterial Compounds.

A total of 51 sponges (Porifera) and 13 ascidians (Chordata) were collected on the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico) and extracted with organic solvents. The resulting extracts were screened for antibacterial activity against four multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial pathogens: the Gram-negative Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of the organic extracts of each marine organism were determined using a broth microdilution assay. Extracts of eight of the species,

Toxicity of crude organic extracts from the zoanthid Palythoa caribaeorum: A biogeography approach.

Marine isolates such as palytoxin (PTX) are of concern within the Caribbean region due to their toxicity. PTX for example has been described as a one of the most known potent marine toxins, known to prevent predation from larger species (e.g. vertebrates) as well as the prevention of being overgrown from other coral species. PTX is a polyhydroxylated polyether toxin with a very large and complex chemical structure that possesses both hydrophilic and lipophilic properties. Previous acute toxicity tests using brine shrimp (Artemia salina) and PTX extract had shown it to be moderately toxic. In h
