Cerebellum enlargement and corpus callosum agenesis: a longitudinal case report.

Macrocerebellum, a neuroradiological and clinical entity of unknown etiology characterized by an isolated, disproportionately large cerebellum, has to date been reported in only a few cases. It has been suggested that the condition could represent a marker for disturbed cerebral development, however, longitudinal reports are lacking. We describe a 19-month-old patient with agenesis of the corpus callosum, who developed enlargement of the cerebellum without clinical signs of cerebellar impairment, a picture that has not been previously described.

SPG11 compound mutations in spastic paraparesis with thin corpus callosum.

BACKGROUND: Autosomal recessive hereditary spastic paraparesis with thin corpus callosum (ARHSP-TCC) is being increasingly recognized as a variety of spastic paraplegia with mental retardation. SPG11 gene mutations have been reported to be associated with ARHSP-TCC. METHODS: As an independent group, we investigated SPG11 gene involvement in four individuals not previously described with either recessive or sporadic HSP-TCC presentation. RESULTS: Chromosome 15q13-15 segregating autosomal disease haplotypes were different across the kindreds and sequencing of SPG11 identified four novel frames…

Focal dermal hypoplasia with subependymal heterotopia and hypoplastic corpus callosum.

A case is reported with right-sided abnormalities involving the brain, eyelid, eye, face and chest. The features described are similar to those found in conditions including focal dermal hypoplasia, microphthalmia with linear skin defects, oculocerebrocutaneous syndrome and terminal osseous dysplasia and pigmentary defects. However, none of these conditions, fully explains the collection of abnormalities found in this patient.

Gamma knife surgery for arteriovenous malformations involving the corpus callosum.

OBJECT: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of gamma knife surgery (GKS) for the treatment of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) involving the corpus callosum. METHODS: Thirty-two patients aged from 7 to 65 years (median 25 years) with AVMs of the corpus callosum underwent GKS between 1990 and 2002. The maximum AVM diameter was more than 3 cm in 11 patients (34%). The AVM volume ranged from 0.1 to 19.1 cm3 (median 1.6 cm3). The median dose to the AVM margin was 20 Gy (range 17-28 Gy). Patients were followed for 1 to 12 years (median 9 years). The angiographically…

Surgery in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. Corpus callosum division for children.

A tonic or "drop" attacks--often seen in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome--are some of the most feared childhood seizures, since they may lead to head injuries. Corpus callosum division will often control atonic seizures, and other types of generalized seizure.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum: female monozygotic triplets. Case report.

A case of identical (monozygotic) triplets, two of whom have agenesis of the corpus callosum, is presented. Prenatal ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed two of the triplets to have agenesis of the corpus callosum and the third triplet to have an intact corpus callosum. No such case has been reported in the literature. Theories of the etiology and pathogenesis of corpus callosum agenesis are discussed. In this case, unequal X-inactivation as related to the twinning process is implicated as the cause of the agenesis.

Familial spastic paraplegia with mental impairment and thin corpus callosum.

We described four patients in two families of unique familial spastic paraplegia (FSP) which was thought to be possibly autosomal recessive inheritance. All four patients had quite similar manifestations. Gait disturbance started at their second decade, then spastic paraparesis and mental deterioration progressed slowly. Cerebellar ataxia and sensory loss in the distal parts of four extremities were also slightly presented. In all patients, cranial MRI revealed marked thin corpus callosum with mild changes in the region of periventricular white matter and in the gray matter. Biopsied sural ner…

Computed tomographic evaluation of corpus callosum agenesis and associated malformations.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is not an uncommon congenital malformation in neurologically symptomatic children. The computed tomographic scan characteristics of uncomplicated agenesis of the corpus callosum include: (a) widely separated parallel or nonconverging lateral ventricles; (b) "Bat wing" or "bullhorn" appearance of the frontal horns; (c) High-riding third ventricle which may be enlarged and have a tear-drop or rhomboid appearance; and (d) Selective dilatation of the occipital horns occurs frequently. Associated malformations identifiable by computed tomographic scan include Dandy-W…

Inappropriate secretion of antiduretic hormone, hypertension, and hypoplastic corpus callosum.

The threshold of serum osmolality causing release of vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone) was shifted to an abnormally low level (262 mosmol/kg H2O) in a 14-year-old girl with hypertension and signs of hypoplastic corpus callosum. There was a physiologically meaningful control of vasopressin release in response to water restriction and water load. Plasma vasopressin concentrations (range 1.2--11.9 pg/ml) were of the same magnitude as those of healthy adults, being abnormally high only when related to the hypotonicity of serum observed. Plasma concentrations of angiotensin II were higher than exp…

Structural organization of 'callosal' OBg in human corpus callosum agenesis.

The structural organization of the 'callosal' OBg was studied in Nissl and Weil stained sections of two human brains completely lacking in the corpus callosum. OBg of the normal brain contains a set of distinctive large pyramidal cells in layer III. By contrast, in the brains with absence of the corpus callosum, layer III of OBg contained a slightly reduced number of smaller pyramidal cells than normal, and the characteristic large pyramidal cells were scarsely detectable. Other layers of OBg were not definitely changed. Furthermore, 'acallosal' striate cortex revealed no specific changes. Fro…

Anatomy of corpus callosum and lateral ventricle: a fiber dissection study.

OBJECTIVE: This fiber dissection study aimed to explore the anatomy of the fibers of corpus callosum. In addition, the authors sought to explore the interior of the lateral ventricle by opening the window created by incisions made on ventral callosal radiations and transverse callosal fibers. METHODS: Blunt fiber dissection of eight formalin fixed normal adult human cadaveric brains was performed. The primary dissection tools were blunt wooden spatulas. Specimens were photographed at progressive steps of dissection. RESULTS: The course of fibers of the corpus callosum and their relationships…

Cytotoxic Lesions of the Corpus Callosum (CLOCC) in Siblings: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND: Cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum (CLOCC) are a rare clinical-radiological syndrome, and cases occurring consecutively in siblings are exceptionally uncommon. This study reports two pediatric siblings with CLOCC (one experiencing two episodes), highlighting the potential role of genetic susceptibility in its pathogenesis. The findings contribute to the limited literature on familial CLOCC and recurrent cases, offering insights into its etiology and clinical variability. CASE PRESENTATION: Two brothers (aged 9 and 12) presented with sudden-onset aphasia and unil…

The risk factors affecting the persistence of corpus callosum splenium lesions.

BACKGROUND: The most compact portion of the corpus callosum (CC) is the corpus splenium (CS). PURPOSE: To evaluate the connection between clinical and demographic features to determine whether neuroimaging findings will be permanent or temporary in CS patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We enrolled 93 patients (age range = 18-86 years) with CS lesions. Demographic and clinical information were recorded. We examined the lesions depending on the location. Group 1 (n = 20) had lesions limited to the CS (egg-shaped or round); group 2 (n = 15) had "boomerang sign" lesions; and group 3 (n = 58) had sp…

Demyelination and impaired oligodendrogenesis in the corpus callosum following lead exposure.

The corpus callosum is an oligodendrocyte-enriched brain region, replenished by newborn oligodendrocytes from oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) in subventricular zone (SVZ). Lead (Pb) exposure has been associated with multiple sclerosis, a disease characterized by the loss of oligodendrocytes. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Pb exposure on oligodendrogenesis in SVZ and myelination in the corpus callosum. Adult female mice were used for a disproportionately higher prevalence of multiple sclerosis in females. Acute Pb exposure (one ip-injection of 27 mg Pb/kg as PbAc2 24 hr …

Retrospective analysis of the prognostic factors of fetal corpus callosum dysplasia.

BACKGROUND: To analyze the genetic characteristics and long-term outcomes of fetuses with dysplasia of the corpus callosum (DCC) or partial agenesis of the corpus callosum (PACC). METHODS: A total of 42 fetuses with DCC (n = 36) or PACC (n = 6) were retrospectively analyzed from January 2016 to December 2022 at the Peking University First Hospital. The cohort was categorized into isolated (15/42, 36%) and nonisolated groups (27/42, 64%), and differences in the genetic abnormalities and long-term outcomes between the two groups were analyzed. DCC was subdivided into short CC, thin CC, and thic…
