Auricular fistula: a review of its clinical manifestations, genetics, and treatments.

Auricular fistula is a common congenital auricular malformation, characterized as a small opening in the skin and a subcutaneous cyst. It can be classified in different ways according to positions of pits and directions of fistula tracts. The term preauricular fistula and variant type of preauricular fistula (postauricular fistula) are used. Auricular fistula prevalence varies in countries and populations, and its actual prevalence is presently unknown. The most accepted and widely cited theory of auricular fistula etiopathogenesis is an incorrect or incomplete fusion of six auricular hillocks

A novel p.Pro871Leu missense mutation in SPECC1L gene causing craniosynostosis in a patient.

INTRODUCTION: Craniosynostosis is one of the most common craniofacial abnormalities. It involves premature closure of one or more cranial sutures. Mutations in many genes have been and continue to be identified in patients. SETTINGS AND SAMPLE POPULATION: Whole blood samples were collected from the patient and family members. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Whole exome sequencing was performed to identify potential mutations in the patient. The results were verified by Sanger sequencing by comparing SPECC1L gene sequence of blood samples from 100 unrelated population-matched controls. RESULTS: The pa…

Extracraniofacial anomalies in Treacher Collins syndrome: A multicentre study of 248 patients.

Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) is a congenital malformation of the craniofacial structures derived from the first and second pharyngeal arches. The craniofacial deformities are well described in the literature. However, little is known about whether there are associated extracraniofacial anomalies. A retrospective study was conducted using data from four craniofacial units. Medical charts were reviewed for the presence and type of extracraniofacial anomalies, as well as age at diagnosis. A possible correlation between the severity of the phenotype and the presence of extracraniofacial anomali

Comparing Psychological Adjustment Across Cleft and Other Craniofacial Conditions: Implications for Outcome Measurement and Intervention.

Although cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) has been a focus of psychological research for a number of years, investigation of adjustment to other, rarer craniofacial anomalies (CFAs) has been scarce. Yet, many features of the journey experienced by patients with CL/P could also have relevance for those affected by other CFAs and vice versa. This brief article summarizes the literature pertaining to psychological adjustment across both craniofacial groups, as represented by several prominent review articles. Similarities across the 2 patient groups in relation to key domains of psychological adjus

Double autosomal trisomy with mosaicism 47,XY(+8)∕47,XY(+21). Morphological and genetic changes of a rare case.

The co-occurrence in the same individual of two numerical chromosomal abnormalities (double aneuploidy) is a very rare condition, especially for autosomes. Clinical presentations are variable depending on the predominating aneuploidy. The authors present a rare case of a male infant with multiple congenital anomalies: craniofacial dysmorphism, short neck, agenesis of the corpus callosum, ventricular septal defect, bilateral broad hallux, large first interdigital space of the toes, plantar furrows, prominent calcaneus and right kidney agenesis. The karyotype identified 82% of mitosis with triso

Trunk and craniofacial asymmetry are not associated in the general population: a cross-sectional study of 1029 adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The literature did not show clearly if a correlation between trunk and facial asymmetry exists. The aim of this study was to verify the association between trunk and facial asymmetries, and trunk and facial sagittal configuration in adolescents. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional screening study. It was carried out in a small town in Northern Italy, from February to April 2014. Healthy children met the inclusion criteria. Exclusion criteria were subjects with physical and cognitive disability, genetic disease, and polymorphism. All subjects underwent a three phases for postural sc

The treatment of facial asymmetry: Review.

Some degree of congenital or acquired asymmetry is normal and universal. Significant facial asymmetry, however, causes both aesthetic, as well as functional problems. The comprehensive management of facial symmetry is scarcely addressed.1-5 Differing etiologies, heterogeneous material, and different ages of patients tend to produce fragmentary reports, the more so as evidence-based evaluation of outcomes is almost impossible. Therefore, a presentation of the general rules of treatment, illustrated by our own material collected from the Hospital and Clinic of Plastic Surgery in Polanica-Zdrój a

Do you know this syndrome? Ascher´s syndrome: clinical findings of little known triad.

Ascher's syndrome consists of double lip, blepharochalasis and sometimes non-toxic thyroid enlargement. It is a rare, benign, rarely reported, and sometimes misdiagnosed condition that most often affects patients under 20 years old. The etiology remains unknown, although factors such as trauma, hormonal dysfunction and heredity have been suggested. Treatment based on surgical intervention is indicated to improve aesthetics or function. The presented case shows a patient diagnosed with Ascher's syndrome based on clinical findings such as double lip and blepharochalasis.

A systematic review of the oral and craniofacial manifestations of cri du chat syndrome.

Cri du chat syndrome is an autosomal disorder. Because it affects few people in the population it is considered a rare disease, yet it is one of the most common autosomal chromosomal syndromes in humans. It entails pathognomonic alterations that affect the craniofacial and oral anatomy of patients. The aim of this study is to review these craniofacial and oral abnormalities in patients with Cri du chat syndrome. The PubMed Medline database was searched using two different strategies. First, we used "Dentistry" and "Cri du chat" as keywords; second, we used "Cri du chat" and "craniofacial." Sev

Craniofrontonasal Syndrome: Atrial Septal Defect With a Novel EFNB1 Gene Mutation.

Craniofrontonasal syndrome (CFNS; OMIM # 304110) is a rare X-linked disorder with greater severity in heterozygous females than in hemizygous males. CFNS is characterized by coronal craniosynostosis, frontal bossing, severe hypertelorism, craniofacial asymmetry, downslant palpebral fissure, broad nasal root, bifid nasal tip, grooved fingernails, curly wiry hair, and abnormalities of the thoracic skeleton. There are very few cases describing association of CFNS with heart defects. We discuss a very rare feature: atrial septal defect in a molecularly confirmed case of CFNS.

Diverse clinical and genetic aspects of craniofrontonasal syndrome.

Craniofrontonasal syndrome is characterized by coronal craniosynostosis, hypertelorism, telecanthus, a broad grooved nasal tip, dental anomalies, mild syndactyly, and broad thumbs. It involves an X-linked malformation syndrome with a variable phenotype that is caused by mutations in the ephrin-B1 gene. Detailed phenotypic analysis indicates that females are more severely affected than males, a highly unusual characteristic for an X-linked disorder. We review the literature on this genetic paradox, and discuss the pattern of inheritance and genetic counseling.

Distraction osteogenesis of the craniofacial skeleton.

In summary, distraction osteogenesis is a safe and effective means of achieving bone lengthening. These techniques were originally applied to the long bones of the extremities; over the past 10 years they have been effectively applied to the bones of the craniofacial skeleton. The new bone regenerate that is observed after distraction osteogenesis is stable, and relapse rates after skeletal advancement are believed to be lower than with conventional osteotomy and bone graft techniques. There is considerable variability in distraction protocols employed in clinical practice, including differenc

Pathogenesis and morphogenesis of craniofacial developmental anomalies.

A condensed review of the morphogenetic mechanisms of facial fabrication, providing insights into developmental anomalies of clinical concern. Genetics, epigenetics and regulation of molecular, cellular, tissue and organ formation are being elucidated in normal and dysmorphological patterns. The pathogenesis of craniosynostosis is related to fibroblast growth factor expression. Analysis of a 28-month-old-child's dysmorphic synostotic skull explores possible mechanisms of malformation and deformation.
