The Importance of Liming with an Appropriate Liming Material: Long-Term Experience with a Typic Palexerult.

Aluminium phytotoxicity is considered the main limiting factor for crop productivity in agricultural acid soils. Liming is a common practice used to improve acidic soil properties, but an appropriate liming material is essential for both agricultural productivity and environmental sustainability. A long-term field experiment with two liming amendments (dolomitic limestone and limestone) was developed during 10 years to determine the changes in soil acidity and assess the effects on crop (rye) yields. Although the adverse effects of the soil acidity conditions were alleviated with both amendmen

Drudgery, accidents and injuries in Indian agriculture.

The Indian farming employs 225 million workforce to cover 140 million hectares of total cultivated land. In spite of rapid farm mechanization (e.g., 149 million farm machinery), the vast resource-poor family farming has primary dependence on traditional methods (e.g., 520 million hand tools and 37 million animal-drawn implements are in operation). The work drudgery, the traumatic accidents and injuries are the major concerns to examine options for ergonomics intervention and betterment of work in crop production activities. This review summarizes human energy expenditure in crop production act…

Folate biofortification in food crops.

Folates are essential vitamins in the human diet. Folate deficiency is still very common, provoking disorders such as birth defects and anemia. Biofortification via metabolic engineering is a proven powerful means to alleviate folate malnutrition. A variety of metabolic engineering approaches have been successfully implemented in different crops and tissues. Furthermore, ensuring folate stability is crucial for long-term storage of crop products. However, the current strategies, shown to be successful in rice and tomato, will need to be fine-tuned to enable adequate biofortification of other s

Effect of biochar and mineral fertilizer integration on growth and nutrient dynamics of rice varieties under dry direct-seeded conditions.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing need for food, which results from fast population growth, requires agricultural methods that can produce more crops while protecting soil health. Biochar has become an effective soil enhancer that boosts soil fertility and nutrient retention while increasing crop productivity. METHODS: The study examined the effects of nutrient management with biochar on the growth performance of direct-seeded rice in the Bagamoyo irrigation project during the cropping period of 2025. The split-plot design was used with three replicates and a split-plot ANOVA and linear mixed effe

Toward Eradication of B-Vitamin Deficiencies: Considerations for Crop Biofortification.

'Hidden hunger' involves insufficient intake of micronutrients and is estimated to affect over two billion people on a global scale. Malnutrition of vitamins and minerals is known to cause an alarming number of casualties, even in the developed world. Many staple crops, although serving as the main dietary component for large population groups, deliver inadequate amounts of micronutrients. Biofortification, the augmentation of natural micronutrient levels in crop products through breeding or genetic engineering, is a pivotal tool in the fight against micronutrient malnutrition (MNM). Although

Landmark research in legumes.

Legumes are members of the family Fabaceae or Leguminosae and include economically important grain legumes, oilseed crops, forage crops, shrubs, and tropical or subtropical trees. Legumes are a rich source of quality protein for humans and animals. They also enrich the soil by producing their own nitrogen in symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. International centers and national institutes collect, maintain, distribute, and produce high-yielding legumes (grain-pulses, oilseeds, forages, nutraceuticals, medicinal shrubs, and trees). Legume breeders are confined within the primary gene pools

Farm-type differences in climate change adaptation intentions.

Agriculture is one of the most sensitive sectors towards climate change. Therefore, farmers are forced to adapt their production to climatic changes. To understand farmers' adaptation behavior, it is important to acknowledge heterogeneity among farmers that affects their management decisions and adjustments to production practices. We conducted a latent class analysis of farmers in southern Germany to identify distinct farmer classes with respect to climate change adaptation intentions. The four identified farmer groups showed varying levels of interest in climate change adaptation. Older farm

Human health implications of organic food and organic agriculture: a comprehensive review.

This review summarises existing evidence on the impact of organic food on human health. It compares organic vs. conventional food production with respect to parameters important to human health and discusses the potential impact of organic management practices with an emphasis on EU conditions. Organic food consumption may reduce the risk of allergic disease and of overweight and obesity, but the evidence is not conclusive due to likely residual confounding, as consumers of organic food tend to have healthier lifestyles overall. However, animal experiments suggest that identically composed fee

A deep learning mobile application for tomato leaf nutrition deficiency identification with YOLOv8 and enhanced augmentation.

Nutritional deficiencies in crops lead to significant yield losses. Early and accurate detection of these deficiencies is crucial for effective intervention, as it enables timely corrective measures, minimizes crop damage, and ensures optimal productivity. Traditional methods for identifying deficiencies generally rely on manual inspection of the leaves, which is time-consuming and prone to errors. To address this challenge, we propose a deep learning (DL)-based approach that uses the latest advancements in object detection model YOLOv8 to detect and locate the affected tomato leaves. This pap

Kinetic model of a determinate legume root nodule reveals plant metabolic characteristics for more efficient nitrogen fixation symbiosis.

While nitrogen fertilizers are widely used in agricultural production, their application incurs significant environmental and energetic costs. In contrast, some crops are less dependent on these fertilizers because they engage in symbioses with rhizobia, nitrogen-fixing bacteria that provide ammonium to the plant in exchange for carbon. However, the carbon cost associated with nitrogen fixation can negatively impact crop yields. Improving the efficiency of this metabolic process could alleviate this impact on crop productivity. Mathematical models can help us quantitatively explore metabolic b

Antifungal Activity of Plant-Derived Essential Oils on Pathogens of Pulse Crops.

Pulse crops such as chickpeas, lentils, and dry peas are grown widely for human and animal consumption. Major yield- and quality-limiting constraints include diseases caused by fungi and oomycetes. The environmental and health concerns of synthetic fungicides used for disease management, emergence of fungicide-resistant pathogens, and demand for organic pulse crop products necessitate the search for effective alternatives. Safe and environmentally friendly plant-derived essential oils (EOs) have been reported effective against some pathogenic fungi. Growth on EO-amended growth medium and an in

Screening and Characterization of Potentially Suppressive Soils against Gaeumannomyces graminis under Extensive Wheat Cropping by Chilean Indigenous Communities.

Wheat production around the world is severely compromised by the occurrence of "take-all" disease, which is caused by the soil-borne pathogen Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici (Ggt). In this context, suppressive soils are those environments in which plants comparatively suffer less soil-borne pathogen diseases than expected, owing to native soil microorganism activities. In southern Chile, where 85% of the national cereal production takes place, several studies have suggested the existence of suppressive soils under extensive wheat cropping. Thus, this study aimed to screen Ggt-suppressive

Soil-Borne Nematodes: Impact in Agriculture and Livestock and Sustainable Strategies of Prevention and Control with Special Reference to the Use of Nematode Natural Enemies.

Soil-borne parasitic nematodes cause severe deterioration in the health of crops and supply animals, leading to enormous economic losses in the agriculture and livestock industry worldwide. The traditional strategy to control these parasites has been based on chemically synthesised compounds with parasiticidal activity, e.g., pesticides and anthelmintic drugs, which have shown a negative impact on the environment. These compounds affect the soil's beneficial microbiota and can also remain as toxic residues in agricultural crops, e.g., fruits and legumes, and in the case of animal products for

Dazomet fumigation with black film mulching improves soil microecology, reduces the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes, and increases yield of Panax notoginseng.

Continuous cropping obstacles constitute a major constraint on sustainable agricultural development, particularly in intensive cultivation of Panax notoginseng (Sanqi). Dazomet fumigation, an effective strategy for managing continuous cropping obstacles, has been widely adopted in practice. In this three-year field study, we systematically evaluated the effects of dazomet fumigation combined with black or white film on soil ecology and crop growth. The results showed that, compared with white film mulching, black film mulching after fumigation significantly accelerated dazomet degradation, sho

Semiochemical applications for managing the grey field slug (Deroceras reticulatum Müller), a major pest of arable crops.

The grey field slug (Deroceras reticulatum) is a globally important gastropod pest of arable crops. The withdrawal of synthetic chemical molluscicides due to human health and environmental concerns has prompted research into other control methods. Particular attention has focussed on behaviour-modifying chemicals (semiochemicals), most of which are derived from plants and other natural sources and include attractants, repellents and deterrents. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the use of semiochemicals in managing D. reticulatum and discusses their potential for use in integrat

The power of magnesium: unlocking the potential for increased yield, quality, and stress tolerance of horticultural crops.

Magnesium (Mg2+) is pivotal for the vitality, yield, and quality of horticultural crops. Central to plant physiology, Mg2+ powers photosynthesis as an integral component of chlorophyll, bolstering growth and biomass accumulation. Beyond basic growth, it critically affects crop quality factors, from chlorophyll synthesis to taste, texture, and shelf life. However, Mg2 + deficiency can cripple yields and impede plant development. Magnesium Transporters (MGTs) orchestrate Mg2+ dynamics, with notable variations observed in horticultural species such as Cucumis sativus, Citrullus lanatus, and Citru
