Modeling pesticides toxicity to Sheepshead minnow using QSAR.

Nowadays, the environmental risk caused by the widespread use of pesticides and their ubiquitous residuals has received more and more attention in academia and regulatory agencies. Due to the large number of pesticides used in agriculture and their adverse effects on all living organisms and the numerous end-points, it is necessary to employ the in silico tools to quickly highlight hazardous pesticides. In this study, we have evaluated the toxicity of pesticides against Sheepshead minnow with the Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) approach. The models for the specific-type (in

New insights from Opisthorchis felineus genome: update on genomics of the epidemiologically important liver flukes.

BACKGROUND: The three epidemiologically important Opisthorchiidae liver flukes Opisthorchis felineus, O. viverrini, and Clonorchis sinensis, are believed to harbour similar potencies to provoke hepatobiliary diseases in their definitive hosts, although their populations have substantially different ecogeographical aspects including habitat, preferred hosts, population structure. Lack of O. felineus genomic data is an obstacle to the development of comparative molecular biological approaches necessary to obtain new knowledge about the biology of Opisthorchiidae trematodes, to identify essential

Immune response and protection in gibel carp, Carassius gibelio, after vaccination with β-propiolactone inactivated cyprinid herpesvirus 2.

Herpesviral haematopoietic necrosis (HVHN) of gibel carp (Carassius gibelio) is a newly emerged infectious disease caused by cyprinid herpesvirus 2 (CyHV-2) and has caused huge economic losses in aquaculture operations. Currently, no effective methods are available for the control of the disease. In this study, β-propiolactone inactivated cyprinid herpesvirus 2 (CyHV-2) vaccine was prepared, and the immune response and protection in cultured gibel carp after vaccination was thoroughly investigated. This included blood cell counting and classification, phagocytic activity, lysozyme and superoxi

Competition and Facilitation between a Disease and a Predator in a Stunted Prey Population.

The role of diseases and parasites has received relatively little attention in modelling ecological dynamics despite mounting evidence of their importance in structuring communities. In contrast to predators, parasites do not necessarily kill their host but instead they may change host life history. Here, we study the impact of a parasite that selectively infects juvenile prey individuals and prevents them from maturing into adults. The model is inspired by the Ligula intestinalis tape worm and its cyprinid fish host Rutilis rutilis. We demonstrate that the parasite can promote as well as demo

Immunohistochemistry, ultrastructure and pathology of gills of Abramis brama from Lake Mondsee, Austria, infected with Ergasilus sieboldi (Copepoda).

Immunohistochemical, ultrastructural and pathological studies were carried out on the gills of bream Abramis brama (L.) from Lake Mondsee, Austria, that were naturally infected with Ergasilus sieboldi Nordmann, 1832. Of a total of 14 specimens of bream examined, the gills of 7 (50%) were parasitized with this copepod and the intensity of infection ranged from 1 to 23 crustaceans per host. Histopathological investigations of infected gill showed extensive tissue damage due to attachment and feeding of the crustacean. Parasites attached close to the base of filaments near the gill arch. Pressure

Effects of dietary methylmercury on reproduction of fathead minnows.

We examined effects of dietary methylmercury (MeHg) on reproduction of fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas). Juvenile fish were fed one of four diets until sexual maturity (phase 1): a control diet (0.06 microg Hg g(-1) dry weight) and three diets contaminated with MeHg at 0.88 (low), 4.11 (medium), and 8.46 microg Hg g(-1) dry weight (high). At sexual maturity, male and female fish were paired, again fed one of the four diets, and allowed to reproduce (phase 2). To assess effects of MeHg during gametogenesis, some fish were fed diets during phase 2 that differed from those during phase 1. Sp

The effect of sodium, calcium and metabolic inhibitors on calcium efflux from goldfish heart ventricles.

1. 45Ca efflux and tissue Ca content were examined in goldfish ventricles under conditions known to affect cellular Ca movements. 2. EGTA or Ca-EGTA was added to the washout solutions in sufficient concentration (10 mM) to avoid retardation of the apparent tissue 45Ca efflux by extracellular 45Ca binding or backflux. 3. After a variable initial increase, the cellular Ca content usually stabilizes within 60 min when ventricles are immersed in Li- or K-substituted saline containing 1.8 mM Ca0 (under these conditions the internal Ca2+ concentration is below 10(-5) M). 4. 45Ca efflux is maximally

The connections of the trigeminal and facial motor nuclei in the brain of the carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) as revealed by anterograde and retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase.

The connections of the rostral and caudal parts of the trigeminal and facial motor nuclei in the carp were studied with the horseradish peroxidase technique. Following ionophoretic peroxidase injections in these motor nuclei, retrogradely labeled cells were observed together with anterogradely labeled motor cell processes. Several cellular areas in thalamus, cerebellum and medulla oblongata were shown to project to the V and VII motor nuclei. Labeled cells were found in the inferior lobe and the glomerular complex of the thalamus. In the medulla oblongata, cells in the descending trigeminal nu

UHPLC-MS/MS-based analysis of lipidomic profiling reveals age-group-associated and species-specific lipid characteristics in Anabarilius grahami.

Anabarilius grahami is a vulnerable endemic cyprinid fish in Yunnan Province, yet its muscle-lipid metabolic features remain poorly understood. In this study, UHPLC-MS/MS-based lipidomics was applied to compare the lipidomes of Anabarilius grahami at three age groups with those of Carassius auratus from a single age group. A total of 1703 lipid metabolites were detected, with glycerophospholipids accounting for the largest proportion (59.84%). Seven differentially abundant lipids (DALs) were identified as potential biomarkers for distinguishing C. auratus and A. grahami. In addition, three DAL

Dietary Wolffia globosa extract enhances innate immunity, serum biochemical responses, antioxidant defense, and expression of related gene in Labeo rohita under winter thermal stress.

INTRODUCTION: Temperature is a key environmental factor regulating physiological, biochemical, and immunological processes in ectothermic fish such as Labeo rohita. Exposure to low-temperature conditions during winter disrupts metabolism, suppresses immunity, and induces oxidative stress, thereby compromising fish health and productivity. METHODS: Labeo rohita fingerlings (initial weight: 8.35 ± 0.50 g) were randomly distributed into four dietary treatments with three replicates each and fed isonitrogenous (25% crude protein) and isocaloric (16.5 MJ kg-1 gross energy) diets supplemented with

Mechanistic insights into profenofos interactions with antioxidant enzymes in Labeo rohita.

Profenofos pesticide (Organophosphate) is one of the most commonly used pesticide products. It has been detected in many freshwater ecosystems and can impact the survival of non-target organisms. Its exposure causes oxidative stress and compromises the ability of fish to regulate its defense mechanisms. While there is significant interest in understanding the effects of profenofos on fish, the exact molecular mechanisms are not yet fully understood. This study is focused on determining the interactions of profenofos with key enzymes of the antioxidant defense system of Labeo rohita (freshwater

Parasites suffer too: Effects of host's pollutant exposure on some life-history traits of acanthocephalan parasites.

Parasites are integral components of biodiversity, shaping host populations, food web dynamics, and ecosystem stability. However, they are influenced by environmental conditions and face growing threats. Despite growing evidence of global declines in parasite populations, the impacts of contaminants on their fitness in freshwater ecosystems remains poorly understood. In this study we investigated how environmental variability, host traits, and pollutant exposure affect the fitness and infection patterns of acanthocephalan parasites in chub (Squalius cephalus). Using a mesocosm approach, we ass

Intraspecific variation in Gyrodactylus mediotorus and G. crysoleucas (Gyrodactylidae) from Nearctic shiners (Leuciscidae): evidence for ongoing speciation, host-switching, and parasite translocation.

A parasitological investigation of Cyprinella venusta and Notropis cf. stramineus sampled in Texas, USA, in the Guadalupe River, revealed the presence of Gyrodactylus crysoleucas Mizelle and Kritsky, 1967 on C. venusta, and Gyrodactylus mediotorus King, Marcogliese, Forest, McLaughlin & Bentzen, 2013 on both fish species. This represents new leuscicid fish hosts and locality records for these two gyrodactylids. Gyrodactylus crysoleucas previously identified from both non-native Californian Notemigonus crysoleucas and from farmed stocks in Minnesota demonstrated intraspecific variability in ter
