Emphysematous cystitis in dogs and cats: A scoping review.

To better characterize emphysematous cystitis and support evidence-based guideline development, a scoping review was performed to identify available evidence pertaining to risk factors, diagnosis, clinical management and outcome of emphysematous cystitis in dogs and cats. After deduplication and screening, 28 references were eligible for data extraction, describing disease in 101 (93%) dogs and 8 (7.1%) cats. The median age was 8.5 y (range 1-13 y) from the 42 animals for which age data were presented. Signs of lower urinary tract disease (excluding hematuria) were identified in only 23% of ca…

Interstitial Cystitis and Dietary Interventions: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) is prevalent and disrupts daily life. Dietary modification is commonly recommended, but evidence is fragmented. We systematically compared dietary interventions; we hypothesized that individualized elimination may improve symptoms, but overall randomized evidence remains limited. METHODS: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, Web of Science, and Scopus from inception through March 2025. Primary outcomes used validated symptom scales (Genitourinary Pain Index [GUPI], O'Leary-Sant Symptom/Problem Index [OSSI/OSPI]…

Role of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy in Radiation Cystitis.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: To summarize existing literature on the outcomes of Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO2) therapy for RC and focus on recent updat … ue to show that HBO2 therapy is a safe and cost-effective tool for treating patients with radiation cystitis-induced gross hematuria. The majority of patients treated with HBO2 will experience at least a partial response. Further data is needed to evaluate the optimum timing, dose, and duration of HBO2 treatment.

Management of Emphysematous Cystitis in the Intensive Care Unit.

Emphysematous cystitis (EC) is a complication of urinary tract infection (UTI) caused by gas-forming bacteria within the walls and lumen of the urinary bladder. We discuss here a case of a 55-year-old woman with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, who received multiple courses of antibiotics for dysuria and who presented with altered mental status, hypotension, and hypoglycemia. Initially, the patient was managed with resuscitation, intravenous antibiotics, and supportive care. Eventually, she required vasopressors and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. Blood culture revealed Proteus mira…

Rare presentation of recurrent eosinophilic cystitis in a child.

Eosinophilic cystitis (EC) is a rare presentation in childhood, with just over 100 cases reported in the literature. It often presents with haematuria and irritative lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) including frequency, urgency and dysuria. EC can be treated conservatively or surgically. We present a case of an early adolescent male patient who presented with dysuria and haematuria. An ultrasound scan and MRI revealed a lesion in the bladder wall raising the suspicion of malignancy. The initial biopsy was inconclusive, and so imaging was repeated a month later, showing the bladder mass had …

A rare case of BK cystitis in an immunocompetent patient.

Hemorrhagic cystitis secondary to BK virus is often seen in immunocompromised patients, but it is a rare cause of hematuria or hemorrhagic cystitis in immunocompetent children. We report a case of an otherwise healthy 4-year-old female who presented to urgent care for urinary frequency, dysuria, and gross hematuria. The initial hematuria workup, including complements, anti-nuclear antibody, anti-streptolysin O titer, and urine culture, was all negative. However, hematuria persisted for 14 days and further work up showed viral PCRs that were positive for BK virus both in blood and urine.

Characteristic genes and immune landscape of interstitial cystitis.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial cystitis (IC) was still a disease with the exclusive diagnosis and lacked an effective gold standard. It was of great significance to find diagnostic markers for IC. Our study was aimed to screen characteristic genes via machine learning algorithms, characterize the immune landscape of IC, and show correlations between characteristic genes and immune cell subtypes. METHODS: RNA sequencing data sets on IC were downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database, including GSE57560, GSE11783 and GSE621, whose corresponding platforms were GPL16699, GPL570 and GPL262 r…

The cost burden of radiation cystitis presentations and investigations.

BACKGROUND: Radiation cystitis is a well-known complication resulting from radiotherapy for pelvic malignancies. It remains a challenging condition to treat and is associated with significant morbidity for patients. We aimed to establish the economic cost burden of presentations and investigations associated with radiation cystitis over a two-year period to a tertiary referral hospital in Ireland. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of patient charts was performed for radiation cystitis-related presentations and investigations over 24 months. Costs were estimated in consultation wit…

Emphysematous Cystitis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common infectious diseases worldwide, predominantly affecting women due to anatomical factors. Among UTIs, emphysematous cystitis (EC) is a rare but clinically significant entity characterized by gas presence in the bladder wall or lumen, often caused by gram-negative bacteria like Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Diagnosis is challenging due to nonspecific symptoms such as dysuria, abdominal pain, and occasionally pneumaturia, with computed tomography being the diagnostic method of choice. We report the case of a 65-year-old male …

In lupus cystitis, is the urinary tract dilated or obstructed?

OBJECTIVES: Lupus cystitis is a rare but serious complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) that can cause permanent bladder dysfunction, leading to irreversible deterioration of kidney function. We report two cases of SLE with lupus cystitis who showed different images from the same cause of disease. METHODS: Patient 1, a 67-year-old woman diagnosed with SLE presented with persistent dysuria for 3 weeks with sudden headache and vomiting. She was hospitalized because of acute kidney injury; the serum creatinine level was 10.68 mg/dL. Computed tomography (CT) showed significant bilater…

Cytomegalovirus haemorrhagic cystitis in a pregnant patient with AIDS.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV), an AIDS defining disease, has a high seroprevalence in the general population, while symptomatic infections occur mostly in immunocompromised individuals. Symptomatic CMV infections commonly include pneumonia, encephalitis, retinitis and colitis, while urinary tract involvement is a rare entity. We present a rare case of massive macroscopic haematuria due to CMV haemorrhagic cystitis in a 29-year-old woman in her second trimester of pregnancy. She was treated with intravenous Ganciclovir after initial resuscitation, and her symptoms promptly resolved. Timely diagnosis an…

Monoclonal Antibody Therapy for the Treatment of Interstitial Cystitis.

An emerging theory regarding the potentially autoimmune nature of painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis (PBS/IC) had led to several studies being conducted to assess the possible therapeutic effect of immunotherapeutic options for PBS/IC. This review presents the available evidence regarding the potential autoimmunity-based pathogenesis of PBS/IC and focuses on a main representative of the immunotherapeutic modalities for PBS/IC, aiming to summarize, evaluate, and present available data regarding the potential therapeutic role of monoclonal antibodies for PBS/IC patients. A non-system…

Acute unilateral hydronephrosis in the setting of hemorrhagic cystitis.

Acute flank pain associated with hematuria and unilateral hydronephrosis is a classic presentation for an obstructing ureteral stone. However, in the setting of hemorrhagic cystitis, blood can acutely obstruct the distal ureter and infrequently result in hydronephrosis. We present a case of an adult female patient with hemorrhagic cystitis who presented with acute right flank pain associated with unilateral hydronephrosis and perinephric fluid on point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) in the absence of renal or ureteral abnormality on CT scan hours earlier. Her symptoms resolved, urine cultures show…

A rare presentation of eosinophilic cystitis in paediatric urology.

Eosinophilic cystitis (EC) is a rare inflammatory condition of the urinary bladder. It is extremely rare in childhood and may present with haematuria, lower abdominal mass or recurrent urinary tract infections. We present the case of a 5-year-old girl with recurrent, painless visible haematuria. Ultrasound showed a bladder mass and left hydronephrosis. Cystoscopy and bladder biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. The patient was successfully managed with oral treatment. In the case of EC, cystoscopy and bladder biopsy is key for diagnosis. Conservative management of unilateral hydronephrosis in EC is…

Emphysematous Cystitis in an Uncontrolled Diabetic: A Case Report.

Emphysematous cystitis is a rare potentially life-threatening infection of the urinary tract system commonly caused by gas forming micro-organisms like Escherichia coli. It is commonly seen in diabetics and middle-aged-elderly women. Presenting symptoms could be variable and unusual on many occasions. Therefore, a high index of suspicion is crucial in prompt/accurate diagnosis and treatment of this disease. This case report presents emphysematous cystitis in a middle-aged woman with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus. Pneumaturia and evidence of emphysematous cystitis on computerized tomograp…

A case of follicular cystitis treated successfully with diethylcarbamazine.

Follicular cystitis is a non-specific inflammatory condition of the bladder where the aetiology is unknown. The extent of the disease can be mild or proliferative and bulky. Antibiotics, steroids, therapies used for interstitial cystitis, palliative cystectomy and radiotherapy have been reported as successful treatment options. We report a case of follicular cystitis that responded to a course of oral diethyl carbamazine.
