Recent advances in the treatment of deafness.

By the utilization of reconstructive procedures (tympanoplasty), middle ear and mastoid infections can be eliminated with the acquisition of a clean, dry ear in about nine out of 10 cases, and hearing can be improved in about half of the patients so treated. Incapacitating attacks of Ménière's disease can be successfully treated in selected cases by labyrinthectomy, ultrasound destruction of the vestibular system, or streptomycin treatment. With the advent of the transistor, improved power packs and miniaturization, hearing aids have become more acceptable to patients with sensorineural hearin

Is a deaf future an "Open" future? Reconsidering the open future argument against deaf embryo selection.

One prominent argument against the use of preimplantation genetic diagnosis to select a deaf embryo with the aim of creating a deaf child is that it violates the child's right to an open future. This paper challenges the open future argument against deaf embryo selection, criticizing its major premise that deafness limits a child's opportunity range in ways that compromise their future autonomy. I argue that this premise is not justified and is supported by negative presumptions about deaf embodiments that are suspect and in need of further argumentation. First, available interpretations of th…

The knowledge of the Municipal Guard of Curitiba about the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), deafness and deaf people.

INTRODUCTION: In Brazil, there is a considerable number of deaf people, sign language users, who should have access to equal opportunities. … s Content Analysis. RESULTS: The results demonstrate that participants have a limited knowledge of deafness and Libras. CONCLUSION: Most members of the Municipal Guard have a view of deaf people and the Brazilian Sign Language based on an organic perspective of deafness, and it was also observed that during their service practices towards deaf people, ma …

Deaf intermarriage has limited effect on the prevalence of recessive deafness and no effect on underlying allelic frequency.

The idea that deaf intermarriage increases the prevalence of deafness was forcefully pushed in the late 19th century by Alexander Graham Bell, in proceedings published by the National Academy of Science. Bell's hypothesis was not supported by a 19th century study by Edward Allen Fay, which was funded by Bell's own organization, the Volta Bureau. The Fay study showed through an analysis of 4,471 deaf marriages that the chances of having deaf children did not increase significantly when both parents were deaf. In light of an apparent increase in non-complementary pairings when a modern dataset o…

[Etiological diagnosis of sensorineural deafness in children: a year-long review of genetic counseling for deaf people].

From February 1996 to January 1997, 74 patients from 53 sibships underwent genetic counselling for sensorineural deafness at the Pasteur Hospital, Paris, France. Genetic counselling was based on the etiological diagnosis of the hearing impairment, by an audiological and non-audiological examination program. At the first examination, 31 families presented with a familial deafness and 22 families with apparently one affected individual. However, familial audiological examinations revealed familial deafness in 5 of these 22 families. Consequently, a total of 36 families had hereditary hearing imp…

The Chinese lexicon of deaf readers: A database of character decisions and a comparison between deaf and hearing readers.

We present a psycholinguistic study investigating lexical effects on simplified Chinese character recognition by deaf readers. Prior research suggests that deaf readers exhibit efficient orthographic processing and decreased reliance on speech-based phonology in word recognition compared to hearing readers. In this large-scale character decision study (25 participants, each evaluating 2500 real characters and 2500 pseudo-characters), we analyzed various factors influencing character recognition accuracy and speed in deaf readers. Deaf participants demonstrated greater accuracy and faster recog

Mitochondrial Disorder: Maternally Inherited Diabetes and Deafness.

Patients with maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD) have insulin-dependent diabetes with relatively low BMI; usually the onset of the diabetes is during the third or fourth decade of life and it is associated with progressive neurosensory deafness.

Deafness: from genetic architecture to gene therapy.

Progress in deciphering the genetic architecture of human sensorineural hearing impairment (SNHI) or loss, and multidisciplinary studies of mouse models, have led to the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms underlying auditory system function, primarily in the cochlea, the mammalian hearing organ. These studies have provided unparalleled insights into the pathophysiological processes involved in SNHI, paving the way for the development of inner-ear gene therapy based on gene replacement, gene augmentation or gene editing. The application of these approaches in preclinical studies over the p

Deficient Recurrent Cortical Processing in Congenital Deafness.

The influence of sensory experience on cortical feedforward and feedback interactions has rarely been studied in the auditory cortex. Previous work has documented a dystrophic effect of deafness in deep cortical layers, and a reduction of interareal couplings between primary and secondary auditory areas in congenital deafness which was particularly pronounced in the top-down direction (from the secondary to the primary area). In the present study, we directly quantified the functional interaction between superficial (supragranular, I to III) and deep (infragranular, V and VI) layers of feline'…

Profound bilateral deafness complicating aortic arch surgery.

Hearing loss is a rare complication of cardiac surgery; bilateral profound deafness has never been reported in this setting. A 45-year-old male presented with profound bilateral sudden deafness following arch surgery and frozen elephant trunk. Patient's presentation, surgery details and aetiological mechanisms are discussed.
