OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the use of homograft dehydrated temporal fascia (Tutoplast) in repair of tympanic membrane perforations secondary to chronic otitis media.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Dehydrated temporal fascia was used during tympanoplasty in 17 patients (10 females, 7 males; mean age 34 years; range 15 to 53 years) with chronic otitis media. Operations were type 1 tympanoplasty in six patients, tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy in three patients, and revision tympanoplasty and/or mastoidectomy in the remaining patients. The patients were followed-up for at least two years.

We studied potentiality of the test of evoked otoacoustic emission (EOAE) for monitoring of dynamic changes in the internal ear in conduction of dehydration tests. In parallel to registration of tonal hearing thresholds and speech intelligibility in conduction of dehydration tests we registered two classes of EOAE: delayed EOAE (DEOAE) and distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE). OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of a new approach for treatment of prostatic obstruction involving transperineal injection of dehydrated ethanol into the prostate using transrectal ultrasound (TRUS).
METHODS: Dehydrated ethanol was injected transperineally into 11 patients with prostatic obstruction due to hyperplasia or carcinoma. Injections were performed under TRUS surveillance at bilateral sites of the prostate for an overall amount of 2 to 8 mL of ethanol for each patient.
RESULTS: There were no intraoperative complications, but postoperative urinary retention occurred in 1 patient

This study examined the combined effect of exercise induced hyperthermia and dehydration on neuromuscular function in human subjects. It is sometimes associated with pseudohyperkalaemia (e.g. an increase of kalaemia when blood is left at room temperature) or with perinatal ascites. Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) was measured by radioimmunoassay in atrial and plasma extracts from normal Long-Evans (LE) rats and Brattleboro-strain diabetes insipidus (DI) rats. Two hundred thirty-four of 242 neonates (96.7%) with a mean dehydration of 5.1% body weight were rehydrated with a glucose-electrolyte solution given orally in an average time of 7 44 hours. Eight (3.3%) neonates required intravenous fluid therapy. Emesis was not an obstacle for complete oral rehydration. Hypernatremia, hyponatremia, and acidosis present on admission were corrected within a few hours. Oral rehydration is an entirely satisfactory choice for treatment of uncomplicated dehydration in neonates.
