Impact of levetiracetam add-on therapy on different EEG occipital frequencies in epileptic patients.

UNLABELLED: The EEG background activity reflects the functional state of the brain. The established sensitivity of EEG to drug intoxication and in particular to antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) made that EEG has become useful as an objective measure for monitoring chronic AED therapy and in investigation of cognitive functions. Therapy with classical AEDs has become associated with slowing of EEG background rhythm and the EEG changes correlated to changes on cognitive measures. So far, it has not been tested whether the relatively new AED, levetiracetam (LEV) has a detrimental effect on the EEG back

Behavioral state instability in orexin knock-out mice.

Narcolepsy is caused by a lack of orexin (hypocretin), but the physiologic process that underlies the sleepiness of narcolepsy is unknown. Using orexin knock-out (KO) mice as a model of narcolepsy, we critically tested the three leading hypotheses: poor circadian control of sleep and wakefulness, inadequate activation of arousal regions, or abnormal sleep homeostasis. Compared with wild-type (WT) littermates, orexin KO mice had essentially normal amounts of sleep and wake, but wake and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) bouts were very brief, with many more transitions between all behavioral states

Influence of clonazepam on cortical epileptic afterdischarges in rats.

Epileptic afterdischarges were induced by low frequency stimulation of the sensorimotor cortex in rats with implanted electrodes. Stimulations were repeated 4 times with 10 min intervals. Stimulation was always accompanied by clonic jerkings of the forepaws and frequently also by rearing and falling of the animals even in cases when no afterdischarge followed. Afterdischarges formed by a spike-and-wave rhythm prevailed, but a transition to spikes superimposed on delta waves ("slow waves superimposed with spikes") as well as a "slow waves superimposed with spikes" type since the very beginning

Extensive metabolic and neuropsychological abnormalities associated with discrete infarction of the genu of the internal capsule.

OBJECTIVE: The clinical presentation of capsular genu infarct varies. Prominent faciolingual weakness and subcortical dementia are the rule, but symptoms depend on the precise location and extension of the lesion beyond the genu. The aim was to characterise the radiographic, electroencephalographic, and neuropsychometric abnormalities in a woman who had a history of recurrent transient memory loss. METHOD: Case report. RESULTS: Magnetic resonance imaging showed an infarct in the genu of the left internal capsule. Positron emission tomography scan demonstrated decreased metabolic activity in

Interictal regional slow activity in temporal lobe epilepsy correlates with lateral temporal hypometabolism as imaged with 18FDG PET: neurophysiological and metabolic implications.

OBJECTIVES: The phenomenon of interictal regional slow activity (IRSA) in temporal lobe epilepsy and its relation with cerebral glucose metabolism, clinical data, MRI, and histopathological findings was studied. METHODS: Interictal 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) was performed under continuous scalp EEG monitoring in 28 patients with temporal lobe epilepsy not associated with intracranial foreign tissue lesions, all of whom subsequently underwent resective surgery. Regions of interest (ROIs) were drawn according to a standard template. IRSA was considered lateral

Electroencephalography and Brain MRI Patterns in Encephalopathy.

INTRODUCTION: Using electroencephalography (EEG) and histology in patients with diffuse encephalopathy, Gloor et al reported that paroxysmal synchronous discharges (PSDs) on EEG required combined cortical gray (CG) and "subcortical" gray (SCG) matter pathology, while polymorphic delta activity (PDA) occurred in patients with white matter pathology. In patients with encephalopathy, we compared EEG findings and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to determine if MRI reflected similar pathological EEG correlations. METHODS: Retrospective case control study of 52 cases with EEG evidence of encephalo

Use of Bioinformatics and Machine Learning to Identify Circadian Rhythm Disruption- and Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress-Associated Biomarkers in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common chronic liver disorder closely linked to circadian rhythm disruption (CRD) and endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS). We aimed to identify CRD- and ERS-associated biomarkers in NAFLD samples and elucidate their roles in shaping disease pathogenesis. We first performed Mendelian randomization (MR) to identify circadian rhythm-related genes (CRRGs) with putative causal effects on NAFLD. Differential expression analysis was conducted via GSE126848 (discovery dataset) to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between NAFLD and controls. Wei

Video-electroencephalographic findings and clinical characteristics of bathing seizures in children.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the electroencephalogram (EEG) and clinical characteristics of childhood bathing epilepsy. METHODS: We conducted a pr … oral region (eight cases) or the occipital and temporal regions (one case), finally evolving into a delta rhythm that lasted for 57-201 s. These children exhibited no seizures after discontinuing bathing and were not administered antiseizure medication. The interictal EEG of one case reflected mild slow background and focal interictal epileptic discharge; and …

Role of Electroencephalography in the Assessment of Cortical Responses Elicited by Music Therapy in Burn Patients Undergoing Intensive Care.

Music therapy (MT) is increasingly being integrated into intensive care unit (ICU) settings to modulate pain, stress, and emotional dysregulation. Although clinically promising, objective biomarkers for quantifying its neurophysiological effects are still missing. In this context, the electroencephalogram (EEG) represents a valid tool to assess cortical dynamics associated with cognitive-affective engagement elicited by MT. Our study aims to evaluate the role of electroencephalography as an objective tool for monitoring cortical responses to MT in the ICU. EEGs acquired from nine burn patients

Cortisol awake response imbalance as an indicator of acute central serous chorioretinopathy: Relationship with choriocapillaris and choroidal features.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to measure in central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) the salivary cortisol awake response (CAR) delta percentage (Δ%) variation, a distinct and robust indicator of cortisol rhythm during wakefulness, commonly proposed as a marker of hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis activity, whose alteration is frequently associated with several adverse health outcomes. METHODS: In the present cross-sectional observational study, salivary CAR Δ% variation was assessed in 17 adult male subjects affected by acute naïve CSC and compared to 17 matched healthy

Effects of pinealectomy on baseline sleep and response to sleep deprivation.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: We have previously reported that older (24 mo.) Fischer rats manifest a diminished post-sleep deprivation increase in NREM and REM sleep. In order to examine whether this decline reflects an age-related change in pineal function, we are now reporting on baseline and recovery sleep parameters in pinealectomized 3-, 12-, and 24-month old rats following 24 hours of sleep deprivation using the disk-over-water method. DESIGN: Three independent age groups; within each group there were sequential measures of sleep under baseline conditions and during recovery from sleep deprivation

cAMP-dependent reversal of opioid- and prostaglandin-mediated depression of the isolated respiratory network in newborn rats.

1. Membrane potential (Vm) and resistance (Rm) of ventral respiratory group (VRG) neurons were measured in the isolated brainstem-spinal cord from newborn rats during bath application of the opioid receptor agonists fentanyl or [D-Ala2, D-Leu5]-enkephalin (Ala-Leu-Enk) and of the prostaglandin E1 (PGE1). 2. PGE1 (0.1-3 microM) and fentanyl or Ala-Leu-Enk (1-50 microM) produced depression and, at higher doses, block of inspiratory nerve activity and respiration-related postsynaptic potentials. This apnoea was associated with hyperpolarization and Rm fall in 25% of thirty-two VRG neurons tested,

Pre-Excited Atrial Fibrillation in a Young Woman with Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome Managed with Catheter Ablation Abroad and Followed in a Low-Resource Setting: A Case Report from Somalia.

BACKGROUND: Wolff-Parkinson-White is a cardiac pre-excitation disease linked to a greater incidence of tachyarrhythmias. The occurrence of pre-excited Atrial Fibrillation (AF) represents a life-threatening condition due to rapid conduction over an accessory pathway, which can also result in ventricular fibrillation and unexpected cardiac death. Management requires prompt recognition and definitive treatment with Catheter ablation, which may not be readily available in low-resource settings. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 25-year-old woman with a long history of dizziness througho

A Single-lead ECG algorithm to differentiate right from left manifest accessory pathways: A reappraisal of the P-Delta interval.

INTRODUCTION: Despite numerous ECG algorithms being developed to localize the site of manifest accessory pathways (AP), they often require stepwise multiple-lead analysis with variable accuracy, limitations, and reproducibility. The study aimed to develop a single-lead ECG algorithm incorporating the P-Delta interval (PDI) as an adjunct criterion to discriminate between right and left manifest AP. METHODS: Consecutive WPW patients undergoing electrophysiological study (EPS) were retrospectively recruited and split into a derivation and validation group (1:1 ratio). Sinus rhythm ECG analysis i

Experimentally induced rhythmic jaw muscle activities during non-rapid eye movement sleep in freely moving guinea pigs.

Rhythmic jaw muscle activities frequently occur during non-rapid eye movement sleep in patients with sleep bruxism. The present study aimed to investigate the response characteristics of the masticatory rhythm generation during non-rapid eye movement sleep in animals. Eleven guinea pigs were surgically prepared for polygraphic recordings by electromyography, electrooculography, electroencephalography and electrocardiography with the implantation of a stimulating electrode. Repetitive electrical microstimulations at three intensities were applied to the corticobulbar tract under freely moving c

Resting state in Alzheimer's disease: a concurrent analysis of Flash-Visual Evoked Potentials and quantitative EEG.

BACKGROUND: To investigate to what extent Alzheimer's Disease (AD) affects Resting State activity, the possible impairment of independent electrophysiological parameters was determined in Eye-open and Eye-closed Conditions. Specifically, Flash-Visual Evoked Potential (F-VEP) and quantitative EEG (q-EEG) were examined to establish whether abnormalities of the former were systematically associated with changes of the latter. METHODS: Concurrently recorded F-VEP and q-EEG were comparatively analysed under Eye-open and Eye-closed Conditions in 11 Controls and 19 AD patients presenting a normal Pa

Amygdaloid modulation of mesopontine peribrachial neuronal activity: implications for arousal.

This research sought to determine if activation of the amygdaloid central nucleus (ACe) modulates the activity of arousal-related neurons within the peribrachial (PB) region. Two categories of neurons were identified. Neurons of the 1st category demonstrated low spontaneous rates and responded with a burst of spikes to acoustic stimuli, characteristics similar to those reported for cholinergic ponto-geniculo-occipital (PGO) wave generator neurons. Neurons of the 2nd category demonstrated significant correlations between their spontaneous activity and the power of delta wave activity in the ele

Impairment of consciousness induced by valproate treatment following neurosurgical operation.

Eight patients, who underwent neurosurgery for various supratentorial lesions presented unexplained impairment of consciousness during the first post-operative days. These states ranged from stupor to deep coma, and two patients had an emergency re-exploration. All these patients were receiving the usual dosage (1000 to 1500 mg per day) of Valproic acid (VPA). The treatment had been initiated either several weeks or months previously in 4 cases, and was thus well tolerated, or the day before surgery in the 4 other cases. EEG recordings displayed diffuse abnormalities, delta waves and/or high v
