Malocclusion in deciduous dentition: a cross-sectional study in a Portuguese preschool population.

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalence of malocclusion in Portuguese preschool children, to characterise occlusion in the deciduous dentition, and to study the relationship between malocclusion, sex, and age. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 3-6 years old children, from 25 randomly selected kindergartens from the Lisbon district. Data were collected through an oral examination. Malocclusion was defined as the presence of any type of occlusion anomaly (anterior crossbite, edge-to-edge, increased overjet, open bite, deep overbite, posterior crossbite, scissor bite), spacing anomaly (c…

Interdisciplinary rehabilitation for mutilated dentition with mini-implants, autotransplants, and a dental implant.

A patient with mutilated dentition was treated to an acceptable result with the help of mini-implants for anchorage, autotransplantation of 2 teeth, one dental implant, and multiple prostheses. The major problems for this mutilated dentition were multiple missing teeth, bite collapse with posterior crossbites, deepbite with a canted gummy smile, and severe skeletal discrepancy of maxillary protrusion and mandibular retrusion. Mini-implant anchorage was applied to retract and intrude the maxillary arch to reduce the protrusion and rotate the mandible counterclockwise to improve the chin project…

Rehabilitation of a Head and Neck Cancer Survivor With a Functionally and Biomechanically Challenged Dentition.

Radiation therapy for patients with head and neck cancer can have damaging effects on oral health, including reduced salivary flow. In this case report, a 58-year-old patient had previously undergone radiation therapy for stage II squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. Symptoms of xerostomia persisted, and her dentition suffered as a result. Problems included moderate to severe loss of tooth structure; erosive pitting lesions on the cusp tips of posterior teeth; and attrition throughout her dentition, particularly in the anterior. To achieve the esthetic, functional, and biomechanical goals of…

A prospective cohort study on the effects of RME in the mandibular dentition of cleft subjects.

PURPOSE: Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is the most frequent orthopedic procedure in cleft subjects. However, little is known about its effects on the mandible. The aim of this study was to investigate the spontaneous response of the mandibular teeth following RME. METHODS: This prospective cohort study was carried out with a sample of thirty participants with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP), 8-15 years old, who had transverse maxillary deficiency. Two participants were excluded. They were allocated into three groups: G1 (n = 10), G2 (n = 10), and G3 (n = 8). G1 was treated with a Fan

Biomechanical analysis for total distalization of the mandibular dentition: A finite element study.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this finite element study was to analyze and clarify the mechanics of tooth movement patterns for total distalization of the mandibular dentition based on force angulation. METHODS: Long-term orthodontic movement of the mandibular dentition was simulated by accumulating the initial displacement of teeth produced by elastic deformation of the periodontal ligament. RESULTS: Displacement of each tooth was caused by movement of the whole dentition, elastic deflection of the archwire, and clearance gap between the archwire and bracket slot. The whole dentition was rotated…

The clinical prognosis of implants that are placed against super-erupted opposing dentition.

OBJECTIVES: If teeth are missing, super-eruption of teeth in the opposing arch can occur in the area and can change the occlusal plane. When missing teeth are replaced with implants, the oral surgeon must determine whether or not the super-erupted teeth need to be treated in order to normalize the occlusal plane. In this study, we evaluated the clinical prognosis of dentition after implant placement and prosthetic treatment were completed in an occlusal plane altered by super-erupted teeth in the opposing arch without additional treatment of the super-erupted teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twe…

Osteoarthrosis of Temporomandibular Joint Related to the Defects of Posterior Dentition: A Retrospective Study.

Osteoarthrosis (OA) of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a progressive degenerative disease, gradually affecting cartilage, synovial membrane … (i.e. 27.6% of the total number of 619). 17.5% from these patients with OA had defect in posterior dentition. Other aetiological factors (stress, skeletal or vertebrogenous disorders) showed higher incidence of OA changes on X-ray. Defect of posterior dentition is not negligible, but it is not the main aetiological factor for osteoarthrosis of TMJ.

Orthodontic correction of a transposed maxillary canine and first premolar in the permanent dentition.

The patient was a 16-year-old Japanese girl whose chief complaints were crowding and transposition of the maxillary canine and first premolar. A setup model was used to preoperatively align the teeth in their transposed positions. The amount of postoperative reshaping was estimated for the occlusal surfaces of the teeth. However, the patient did not wish to have her teeth reduced by reshaping or to have composite materials for restorative camouflage. Because she strongly expected alignment of her teeth in the correct intra-arch position, her transposed teeth were corrected without extraction o

Supernumerary teeth in primary dentition and early intervention: a series of case reports.

Supernumerary teeth are considered as one of the most significant dental anomalies during the primary and early mixed dentition stages. They are of great concern to the dentists and parents because of the eruption, occlusal, and esthetic problems they can cause. Supernumerary teeth occur more frequently in the permanent dentition but rarely in primary dentition. Mesiodens is the most common type of supernumerary teeth but rarely seen in lower arch. Early recognition and diagnosis of supernumerary teeth is important to prevent further complications in permanent dentition. Four cases of supernum…
