Nickel sulfate is the most frequently detected cause of allergic contact dermatitis in the world; the prevalence of nickel allergic contact dermatitis is between 8 and 11% in the general female population. Although it is well recognized that environmental factors are important in the pathogenesis of this dermatitis, some investigators have hypothesized that genetic factors are important as well. This review summarizes animal and human studies evaluating genetic factors in the development of allergic contact dermatitis from nickel.

Acrylates are a well-known cause of occupational contact dermatitis due to its widespread use in several settings such as dentistry, orthopaedic surgery, graphic industry and cosmetics. We describe the case of a manicurist who developed occupational rhinitis and allergic contact dermatitis induced by the application of acrylic-sculptured nails.

Granuloma annulare is a benign idiopathic disorder of the dermis that has various clinical presentations and an unknown etiology. We discuss a patient who presented with a contact dermatitis that demonstrated granuloma annulare on biopsy. The most likely etiologic agent was a substance known as FAZ (an exhaust product of Kodak DryView laser imaging film), to which the patient was exposed in his occupation.

BACKGROUND: Contact allergy to grease is rare and often not even suspected. We investigated such a case in which the detected allergen was the stabilizer in the grease, which is rarely found as an allergen.
OBJECTIVE: Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) was used in a novel way and helped detect the allergen.
METHODS: Patch testing with our standard series, a metal-working series, the different substances individually, the grease in serial dilution and extracts of personal objects, the TLC plate. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was also used.
RESULTS: Test results indicated contact allergy

Occupational irritant contact dermatitis (ICD), a non-immunological cutaneous inflammatory response to a workplace substance, comprises a major portion of occupational dermatoses in industrialized societies, resulting in considerable social and economic implications. The sheer morphological variety of ICD presents a diagnostic and classification challenge; ideotypes identified to date include acute, chronic and cumulative irritant dermatitis, delayed acute irritant dermatitis, irritant reaction, pustular irritant dermatitis, suberythematous irritation, sensory irritation, friction dermatitis a

BACKGROUND: The Eutectic Mixture of Local Anesthetics (EMLA cream) is a topical anesthetic used for providing pain relief in patients undergoing superficial surgical procedures. Cutaneous side-effects have been reported rarely.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of irritant contact dermatitis induced by EMLA cream in a 6-year-old boy with Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome. Our patient showed clinically a well circumscribed patch corresponding to the site of application of the topical anesthetic. Histopathology showed confluent necrosis of keratinocytes in the upper epidermis, a mixed inflammatory infiltra

The high risk of occupational contact dermatitis in dental personnel are well accepted throughout the world. There are few reports concerning occupational skin disease in dental personnel in Korea. The purposes of this study were to investigate the frequency, characteristics and causative factors of contact dermatitis in Korean dental technicians. Recording of personal history, physical examination and patch tests with the Korean standard series and dental screening series were performed in 49 dental technicians. Most of the subjects were exposed to a variety of compounds, including acrylics,

BACKGROUND: Reports on natural latex allergy have increased steadily during the last 10 years. Latex allergy generally refers to a type 1 reaction to natural rubber latex (NRL) proteins with clinical manifestations ranging from contact urticaria to asthma and anaphylaxis. Previous United States studies on NRL allergy largely have been reported by allergists with little detailed information on hand eczema, contact allergy, or on outcome. The present study was performed from March 1998 to November 1999 with the aim of finding out the prevalence of type IV hypersensitivity to latex in patients wi

The present paper describes several individual cases of contact dermatitis in patients using propolis as a component of various cosmetic products, listing the most frequently sensitizing constituents of propolis. It also reports the existence of a cross-reaction between the components of Peruvian balsam and propolis constituents.
