Seborrheic dermatitis-like eruption in patients taking isotretinoin therapy for acne: retrospective study of five patients.

The knee is a frequent target for gout and calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) disease with involvement of both articular and peri-articular structures. The aims of the present study were to investigate the relationship between clinical and ultrasound (US) findings and to describe the prevalence and distribution of crystal deposits in the knee in patients with gout and CPPD disease. Thirty patients with gout and 70 patients with CPPD disease were enrolled in the study. Prior to US assessment all patients underwent a clinical examination by an expert rheumatologist who recorded the presence/

Patient and healthcare provider perspectives on treatment patterns and patient satisfaction of seborrheic dermatitis in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) affects a large, diverse population and is associated with significant morbidity/burden. METHODS: The Harris Poll conducted online surveys to understand the perceptions, preferences, and experiences regarding treatments of US patients with SD and dermatology healthcare providers (HCPs) from December 2021 to January 2022. RESULTS: In this survey, patients using SD treatment invested on average 34 min/d treating SD with 5.9 different treatments/week (cost: ∼$650/year). HCPs underestimated duration of SD treatment (16 min/d). Most patients agreed current

Efficacy and Safety of Isotretinoin for Moderate-to-Severe Seborrheic Dermatitis: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

This study provide a comprehensive analysis of using oral isotretinoin as a promising therapy for severe to moderate seborrheic dermatitis, which is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that results in scaling as well as erythema that affects specific sites of the skin such as the scalp, face, upper trunk, or flexures. However, the exact cause of this condition is unclear.Various internal and external factors are associated with its pathogenesis. It is believed that the main factor is the overgrowth of Malassezia yeast, which is a part of the normal skin flora, proliferates in the sebum-rich a

The Efficacy and Safety of Pimecrolimus in Patients With Facial Seborrheic Dermatitis: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Facial seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that can affect the quality of life with frequent recurrences. There is no medication as yet to cure this disease completely. There are four general categories of agents that are used to treat SD: antifungal agents, keratolytics, corticosteroids, and lastly calcineurin inhibitors. Topical therapies are the mainstream line of treatment to be used for this skin condition. The objective of this article is to critically review the published data in the literature on the use of topical pimecrolimus 1% topical cream as an opt

A Meta-Analysis on the Effectiveness of Sertaconazole 2% Cream Compared with Other Topical Therapies for Seborrheic Dermatitis.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a relapsing inflammatory skin disorder that affects the seborrheic areas of the body. Its etiology is not completely elucidated; however, the link between disease exacerbations and the proliferation of Malassezia spp., along with the good response to antifungal agents, indicate the role of fungi in its pathophysiology. Sertaconazole nitrate is a relatively new imidazole antifungal agent with a particular structure, consisting in a benzothiophene ring similar to the indole ring of tryptophan, and it acts mainly through the inhibition of ergosterol synthesis and the

A Review of the Current Evidence Connecting Seborrheic Dermatitis and Parkinson's Disease and the Potential Role of Oral Cannabinoids.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder associated with multiple comorbidities, including seborrheic dermatitis (SD), which develops in more than half of PD patients. SD in patients with PD can be severe and frequently intractable by traditional topical therapy. Cannabinoids possess anti-inflammatory and neuromodulatory properties working within the intrinsic endocannabinoid system, the activation of which may alleviate the motor symptoms of PD. The effect of cannabinoids on SD is unknown. Here we explore the pathophysiological mechanisms and possible therapeutic role of oral

A comparative study of hair shafts in scalp psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis using atomic force microscopy.

BACKGROUND: As the inflammatory scalp conditions share similar clinical manifestations of scaling, inflammation, and pruritus, the differential diagnosis of these lesions; especially between scalp psoriasis (SP) and seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is sometimes difficult. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate the differences on the hair surface in SP and SD for a clinical diagnosis, using atomic force microscopy (AFM). METHODS: The hair shafts of 14 patients and 28 patients with SP and SD respectively, were taken from the lesional region. Hairs from healthy adults not having any hai

Molecular analysis of Malassezia microflora in seborrheic dermatitis patients: comparison with other diseases and healthy subjects.

Malassezia species colonize the skin of normal and various pathological conditions including pityriasis versicolor (PV), seborrhoeic dermatitis (SD) and atopic dermatitis (AD). To elucidate the pathogenic role of Malassezia species in SD, Malassezia microflora of 31 Japanese SD patients was analyzed using a PCR-based, culture-independent method. Nested PCR assay using the primers in the rRNA gene indicated that the major Malassezia species in SD were M. globosa and M. restricta, found in 93 and 74% of the patients, respectively. The detection rate and number of each species varied similarly in

Application of rank analysis of covariance methods to analysis of multiple anatomical regions with treatment for seborrheic dermatitis.

This paper presents the advantages of rank analysis of covariance in contrast to the Mantel-Haenszel procedure in the presence of a covariate. In this paper, data from a clinical trial with an indication for seborrheic dermatitis, which afflicts multiple anatomical regions, is presented. This paper presents analysis performed using both the Mantel-Haenszel procedure and rank analysis of covariance for separate anatomical regions, as well as for the combined anatomical regions. The analysis for the combined anatomical regions involves weighted sums over different strata.

Concomitant psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and disseminated cutaneous histoplasmosis in a patient infected with human immunodeficiency virus.

Cutaneous involvement with disseminated histoplasmosis occasionally occurs in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. We describe a profoundly immunocompromised patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome who had concomitant psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and disseminated histoplasmosis, each with similar features. Findings of a skin biopsy specimen from a lesion on the forehead showed an infiltrate of histiocytes filled with Histoplasma capsulatum. In disseminated histoplasmosis involving the skin, lesions may have features more characteristic of a papulosquamous derma

New perspectives on dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis: lessons we learned from bacterial and fungal skin microbiota.

The human body is inhabited by complex microbial communities, which positively impact different aspects of our health, and might also be related to the development of diseases. Progress in technologies, particularly sequencing methods and bioinformatics tools, has been crucial for the advances in this field. Microbial communities from skin can modulate immune response and protect the host against pathogens, and there are also data supporting their association with several skin conditions; including dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. For decades, they have been thought to be related to Malasse
