The roentgenographic staging of sarcoidosis. Historic and contemporary perspectives.

The awareness that sarcoidosis can involve intrathoracic lymph nodes and lung parenchyma in sequential fashion evolved during the first half of this century. This awareness resulted in a roentgenographic staging system that has relevance to the course and prognosis, pulmonary function changes, and the symptom of dyspnea. The following definition or roentgenographic staging is proposed as the simplest, most reproducible system based solely on the roentgenographic appearance, avoiding histopathologic and pathophysiologic inferences. Stage I: bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy; stage II: bilateral h

[Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) a bloodtest for diagnosis of sarcoidosis (author's transl)].

Serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) was studied in 50 patients with sarcoidosis (39 active, 11 inactive) as well as in 50 control patients (34 with chronic nonspecific lung disease, 9 with Hodgkin and 7 with rheumatoid arthritis). There was a significant difference of ACE activity between sarcoidosis patients (28.6 +/- 11.4) and controls (14.8 +/- 4), and also between active (32.8 +/- 11) and the inactive (21.9 +/- 5.1) sarcoidosis (p less than 0.001). Coricosteroid treatment seems to lower ACE activity in patients with sarcoidosis without offering a clue for clinical improvement. Increa

Kinin, kininogen and kininase levels during acute Babesia bovis (= B. argentina) infection of cattle.

1. Kinin levels began rising on day 3 after infection of cattle with Babesia bovis (= B. argentina) and attained a maximum value of 98% above preinfection levels by day 7. 2. Kininogen levels began falling on day 3 and reached minimum levels of 83% below preinfection levels on day 8. 3. Changes in both kinin and kininogen levels on day 3 coincided with the detection of low levels of parasites, and with a fall in packed cell volume. 4. Plasma kininase levels rose significantly 6 to 9 days after infection. Preparations of lysed and sonicated uninfected and infected red cells contained kininase a

Intestinal perfusion studies in tropical sprue. 1. Amino acid and dipeptide absorption.

Intestinal absorption of glycine 20 mmol/1, glycyl-glycine 10 mmol/1 plus L-leucine 10 mmol/1, and glycyl-L-leucine 10 mmol/1 has been studied by intestinal perfusion in 11 patients with tropical sprue and 10 control subjects. The patients with sprue had a significant reduction in the rate of absorption of glycine from a 20 mmol/1 solution, but there were no significant differences in the absorption of the other substances. The failure to demonstrate any difference in the absorption of these substances is probably related to their low concentration relative to the maximum absorptive capacity o

Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors and Metabolic Aging: A Drosophila Perspective.

Aging is characterized by a progressive decline in physiological function that impairs performance and increases vulnerability to disease and mortality. Delaying this deterioration is key to promoting healthy aging. Age-associated functional decline is closely linked to alterations in intermediary metabolism, including disrupted lipid metabolism and impaired mitochondrial function. Counteracting these metabolic changes, particularly those affecting basal metabolic rate and energy utilization, may be a feasible strategy to extend healthspan. The Renin-Angiotensin System (RAS), which controls bl

Characterising the role of placental angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) during the onset of oxidative insult by hypoxia/reoxygenation: Implications for fetal growth restriction.

INTRODUCTION: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a leading cause of infant morbidity and mortality. Approximately 60% of FGR cases result from placental dysfunction, often due to defective remodelling of the uterine vasculature and subsequent exposure to hypoxia/reoxygenation that induces oxidative stress. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) counteracts the ACE-driven axis of the renin-angiotensin system and is reduced in FGR placentae. We aimed to investigate the role of ACE2 in protecting against placental oxidative stress induced via a hypoxia/reoxygenation event. METHODS: Term placental

Transcriptome and machine learning analysis of the impact of COVID-19 on mitochondria and multiorgan damage.

The effects of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) primarily concern the respiratory tract and lungs; however, studies have shown that all organs are susceptible to infection by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). COVID-19 may involve multiorgan damage from direct viral invasion through angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), through inflammatory cytokine storms, or through other secondary pathways. This study involved the analysis of publicly accessible transcriptome data from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database for identifying significant differentially expre

Natriuretic effect of 4',5-dihydroxy-6,7-methylenedioxyflavonol-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-xylopyranoside from Boldoa purpurascens: in silico and in vivo studies.

Aqueous leaf extracts of Boldoa purpurascens are widely used because of their diuretic, natriuretic, antiurolithiatic, anti-inflammatory and antihypertensive properties. The major component of the extract is the flavonoid 4',5-dihydroxy-6,7-methylenedioxyflavonol-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-xylopyranoside, but it is not known if this compound is responsible for the biological activity. The objective of this work is to develop effective in silico tools that allow predicting the possible activity of the flavonoid aglycone as an inhibitor of metalloproteases that regulate renal fluid excret

Get reliable laboratory findings - how to recognize the deceptive effects of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor therapy in the laboratory diagnostics of sarcoidosis?

OBJECTIVES: Serum angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) is the only biomarker routinely used in the laboratory diagnostics of sarcoidosis, and ACE inhibitor (ACEi) drugs are among the most prescribed drugs worldwide. Taking ACEi can mislead medical teams by lowering ACE activity, delaying diagnosis and giving a false impression of disease activity of sarcoidosis. We aimed to develop a simple method to detect the presence of ACEi drugs in samples, to investigate the ACEi medication-caused interference and consequences in a retrospective study. METHODS: ACE activity and the level of ACE inhibitio

Infection by zika virus increase angiotensin I-converting enzyme activity in mouse brain.

Congenital zika virus syndrome (CZS) has become a significant worldwide concern since the sudden rise of microcephaly related to zika virus (ZIKV) in Brazil. Primarily transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, ZIKV shares serologic similarities with dengue virus (DENV), complicating the diagnosis and/or clinical management. The Angiotensin I-Converting Enzyme (ACE) was associated with either neuroprotective or anti-inflammatory properties in the central nervous system (CNS). The possible role(s) of ACE in these two flaviviruses infection remain largely unexplored. In this study, we evaluate ACE activit

Association of ACE gene polymorphisms with in-stent restenosis by stent type (biomime, supraflex, xience).

INTRODUCTION: Angiotensin Converting Enzyme or ACE is an exo-peptidase that causes the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, vasoconstriction, and aldosterone production. ACE gene polymorphism (I/D) affects enzyme activity and the risk of coronary artery disease or CAD. AIMS: To examine the role of ACE (I/D) Gene Polymorphisms by Stent Types (Biomime, Supraflex, Xience) the Ace gene allele and genotype frequencies were determined in patients who underwent angioplasty. MATERIAL & METHODS: Patients with in-stent restenosis (ISR+) (N = 53) and patients as non-ISR group (ISR-) (N = 68)

COVID-19-Induced Myocarditis: Pathophysiological Roles of ACE2 and Toll-like Receptors.

The clinical manifestations of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) commonly include dyspnoea and fatigue, and they primarily involve the lungs. However, extra-pulmonary organ dysfunctions, particularly affecting the cardiovascular system, have also been observed following COVID-19 infection. In this context, several cardiac complications have been reported, including hypertension, thromboembolism, arrythmia and heart failure, with myocardial injury and myocarditis being the most frequent. These secondary

ACE inhibitory peptides from enzymatic hydrolysate of fermented black sesame seed: Random forest-based optimization, screening, and molecular docking analysis.

In this study, black sesame seeds were fermented by Lactobacillus Plantarum NCU116 and then hydrolyzed using acid protease to improve Angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity. The random forest-particle swarm optimization (RF-PSO) model was applied to predict the ACE inhibitory activity during the hydrolysis process based on the experimental data. After separating by adsorption chromatography, gel filtration chromatography, and reversed phased-high performance liquid chromatography and then screening in silico method, eight peptides were identified from fermented black sesame

CT-based Radiogenomics Framework for COVID-19 Using ACE2 Imaging Representations.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 which enters the body via the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and altering its gene expression. Altered ACE2 plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of COVID-19. Gene expression profiling, however, is invasive and costly, and is not routinely performed. In contrast, medical imaging such as computed tomography (CT) captures imaging features that depict abnormalities, and it is widely available. Computerized quantification of image features has enabled 'radiogenomics', a research discipline t

Nitric Oxide and its Derivatives Containing Nasal Spray and Inhalation Therapy for the Treatment of COVID-19.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has become a major health concern worldwide and has evolved into different variants. SARS-CoV-2 possesses a spike glycoprotein on its envelope that binds to the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) receptor of the host cell via the receptor-binding domain (RBD) in the upper respiratory tract. Since the SARS-CoV-2 virus variants change the severity of the diesease and treatment scenarios, repurposing current medicines may provide a quick and appealing method with established safety features. The efficacy and safety of antiviral med

Hazelnut peptide fractions preserve their bioactivities beyond industrial manufacture and simulated digestion of hazelnut cocoa cream.

Cold press hazelnut cakes represent a concentrated source of proteins that can be industrially exploited. Previously, bioactive attributes of hazelnut protein hydrolysates including antihypertensive and antidiabetic activities were documented. Here, we made an attempt to utilize bioactive hazelnut protein hydrolysates (1 % w/w) in the manufacture of industrial hazelnut cocoa cream and investigate their stability through processing and simulated gastrointestinal digestion. The inclusion of bioactive peptide fractions was a safe practice in the microbiological sense. Proteolysis lowered the pote

Evaluation of insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphisms of ACE gene and circulating levels of angiotensin II in congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract.

BACKGROUND: Congenital Anomalies of the Kidney and the Urinary Tract (CAKUT) are defined as a heterogeneous group of anomalies that resulted from defects in kidney and urinary tract embryogenesis. CAKUT have a complex etiology. Genetic, epigenetic and environmental factors have been investigated in this context. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor and exerts an important role in kidney embryogenesis. The angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) converts Angiotensin I into Angiotensin II (Ang II) and ACE gene has insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphisms that have been evaluated in several nephr

Severe acute respiratory syndrome and thyroid: A molecular point of view.

SARS-CoV-2 and some other members of Coronaviridae family have recently forced a great deal of health, social, and economic issues globally. To that end, investigations have been oriented towards finding ways for reducing the burden of COVID-19. One of the occurrences which stands in the way of making the treatment of this disease less complicated is the way coronaviruses involve a variety of cells, tissues, organs, and even systems. This action is possible as a result of viral attachment to the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 or ACE2. Thus, any kind of cell expressing ACE2 is prone to be affe
