Hospitals and Laboratories on Paper-Based Sensors: A Mini Review.

With characters of low cost, portability, easy disposal, and high accuracy, as well as bulky reduced laboratory equipment, paper-based sensors are getting increasing attention for reliable indoor/outdoor onsite detection with nonexpert operation. They have become powerful analysis tools in trace detection with ultra-low detection limits and extremely high accuracy, resulting in their great popularity in medical detection, environmental inspection, and other applications. Herein, we summarize and generalize the recently reported paper-based sensors based on their application for mechanics, biom

Potential role of safer injection facilities in reducing HIV and hepatitis C infections and overdose mortality in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Safer injection facilities (SIFs) reduce risks associated with injecting drugs, particularly public injection and overdose mortality. They exist in many countries, but do not exist in the United States. We assessed several ethical, operational, and public health considerations for establishing SIFs in the United States. METHOD: We used the six-factor Kass framework (goals, effectiveness, concerns, minimization of concerns, fair implementation, and balancing of benefits and concerns), summarized needs of persons who inject drugs in the United States, and reviewed global evidence fo

Single-Use vs Reusable Catheters for Intermittent Catheterization in Patients With Urinary Retention: The COMPARE Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is the preferred management for urinary retention. Single-use catheters generate substantial environmental and financial burdens, whereas evidence on the safety of reusable catheters is limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether reusable catheters are noninferior to single-use catheters for CIC with respect to urinary tract infection (UTI) incidence. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This multicenter, noninferiority randomized clinical trial was conducted between February 21, 2020, and April 3, 2025, at 12 Dutch hospitals and included patient

Development of disposable self-regulating blood pumps and automatically-controlled portable extracorporeal membrane oxygenation systems for neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

For safer and simpler neonatal ECMO management, the authors have been developing an innovative, automatically-controlled ECMO machine using self-regulating blood pumps. The newest model is an air-driven, tube-type blood pump. A pair of blood pumps are placed in parallel and actuated alternately with compressed air. The pump flow is automatically regulated in accordance with hemodynamic changes of the body. The need for a venous reservoir is eliminated because the circuit does not generate excessive negative pressure when there are shortages of draining blood. Therefore, the priming volume of t

Prions and disposable surgical instruments.

Single-use surgical instruments have been used in the UK's ENT departments. This is in response to guidelines issued by the Department of Health and the British Association of Otolaryngologists and Head and Neck Surgeons, in order to prevent the spread of new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) in a young population of patients undergoing routine adenotonsillectomy. In one institution we found that the new single-use instruments were inferior to previous standard kits and that postoperative haemorrhage rates had increased following children's tonsillectomy from 1.7% to 7.8% (p<0.01). Carbon Footprint in Hepatectomy Increases as the Approach Shifts From Open to Laparoscopic and Robot-Assisted Surgery.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the environmental impact of hepatectomy approaches-open, laparoscopic, and robot-assisted-in terms of carbon footprint (CFP). METHODS: Thirty patients undergoing partial hepatectomy were divided equally into open (n = 10), laparoscopic (n = 10), and robot-assisted (n = 10) groups. CFP was calculated by considering disposable device production, operating room energy consumption, and disposal stages based on device characteristics, energy measurements, and surgical video analysis. RESULTS: The robot-assisted group (median [range], 59.7 [41.8-100.4] kg-CO2) demo

Do disposable diapers reduce urination elimination signals in non-toilet-trained children?

UNLABELLED: Elimination signals play a key role in facilitating toilet training. This pilot study assessed whether disposable diapers affect urination elimination signals in typically developing children aged 18 to 36 months who are not yet toilet trained. A prospective observational pilot study with a within-subject design was conducted under two conditions, presented in a fixed order: first diaper-free, then with a diaper. Three trained researchers conducted real-time and video-recorded observations, using a urination elimination signals checklist. Of the 28 children enrolled, complete data

Removal of cyanide from water by means of plasma discharge technology.

Two different nonthermal plasma reactors at atmospheric pressure were assessed for the first time for cyanide removal (1 mg L(-1)) from aqueous solutions (0.025 M NaHCO(3)/NaOH buffer, pH 11) at laboratory scale. Both devices were dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactors; one of them was a conventional batch reactor (R1) and the other one was a coaxial thin falling water film reactor (R2). A first-order degradation kinetics was proposed for both experiments, obtaining k(R1) = 0.5553 min(-1) and k(R2) = 0.7482 min(-1). The coaxial reactor R2 yielded a removal of 99% within only 3 min. An international survey of daily disposable contact lens prescribing.

PURPOSE: The aim was to determine the extent of daily disposable contact lens prescribing worldwide and to characterise the associated demographics and fitting patterns. METHODS: Up to 1,000 survey forms were sent to contact lens fitters in up to 40 countries between January and March every year for five consecutive years (2007 to 2011). Practitioners were asked to record data relating to the first 10 contact lens fits or refits performed after receiving the survey form. Survey data collected since 1996 were also analysed for seven nations to assess daily disposable lens fitting trends since

Performance of UV disinfection and the microbial quality of greywater effluent along a reuse system for toilet flushing.

This paper examines the microbial quality of treated RBC (Rotating Biological Contactor) and MBR (Membrane Bioreactor) light greywater along a continuous pilot-scale reuse system for toilet flushing, quantifies the efficiency of UV disinfection unit, and evaluates the regrowth potential of selected microorganisms along the system. The UV disinfection unit was found to be very efficient in reducing faecal coliforms and Staphylococcus aureus. On the other hand, its efficiency of inactivation of HPC (Heterotrophic Plate Count) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was lower. Some regrowth occurred in the re

A simplified method for anal ultrasonography: assessment of patient satisfaction and the simplicity of the procedure.

BACKGROUND: Anal endosonography reliably visualizes and identifies anal sphincter abnormalities. However, dedicated probes are quite expensive. We evaluated a simple and less-costly procedure for anal endosonography involving the insertion of the endoscope through a disposable anoscope filled with standard ultrasound gel in terms of patient satisfaction and the simplicity of the procedure in comparison with the standard technique in a unit that already had echoendoscopes available. METHODS: The two techniques were used in 35 subjects without anal abnormalities and data on the simplicity of th

Disposable laryngeal tube suction--a randomized comparison of two insertion techniques performed by novice users in anaesthetised patients.

OBJECTIVE: Laryngeal tubes are supraglottic airway devices that can be used in alternative to a tracheal tube to provide ventilation during cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The product line has recently been expanded by the disposable laryngeal tube suction (LTS-D). We tested the hypothesis that, with a modified insertion technique (MIT), the rate of correct placement attempts within 45 s could be significantly increased compared to the standard insertion technique (SIT) recommended by the manufacturer. METHODS: Fifty-four adult patients undergoing trauma surgery under general anaesthesia had a

[Disposable contact lenses and their complications].

Disposable soft contact lenses (DSCLs) have been marketed as a safer alternative to conventional soft lenses. Extended-wear DSCLs are designed for one or two weeks of continuous use before disposal. Those for daily wear are designed for use as conventional daily wear soft lenses, with daily removal and storage for 2 to 4 weeks before disposal. Beside minor complications, such as corneal abrasion, giant papillary conjunctivitis and toxic epithelial reactions to contact lens solutions, the most serious complication occurring in contact lens users is ulcerative keratitis. Several case-control stu

Influence of extended soft contact lens wear on the comparative measurement of central corneal thickness.

The clinical performance of a portable ultrasound pachometer was compared with a digital, 'optical' pachometer attachment of a contact specular microscope. The two separate methods were used to assess central corneal thickness (CCT) in 214 extended-wear soft contact lens subjects over a cumulative 33 month period. The two test methods did not correlate well (r = 0.56). Mean ultrasound CCT was 0.542 mm +/- 0.004 SEM; mean CSM 'optical' attachment CCT was 0.562 mm +/- 0.004 SEM (significantly different by t-test; p < 0.05). A two-way anova (each CCT method by immediate duration of extended lens
