INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The etiopathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS), which is a chronic, progressive, inflammatory, systemic disease, has not been fully elucidated yet. Thiol-disulfide homeostasis, a component of antioxidant defense, is thought to play a role in the etiology of inflammatory diseases. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the potential clinical use of dynamic thiol-disulfide balance in cases with preinvasive lesions of the cervix.
METHODS: One hundred and sixteen patients with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, 100 patients with low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, and 110 healthy controls were enrolled in the study. Airway mucus is essential for lung defense, but excessive mucus in asthma obstructs airflow, leading to severe and potentially fatal outcomes. BACKGROUND: In this study, we aimed at determining the dynamic thiol/disulfide homeostasis and oxidant balance, and investigating the relation of these parameters to the severity of the disease and the serum calcium levels.

PURPOSE: To evaluate thiol/disulfide homeostasis in both maternal and fetal compartment in the presence of fetal growth restriction (FGR).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective case-control study was carried out in women with FGR (n: 40) or normally growing fetus (n: 40). FGR was defined as estimated fetal weight below the 10th percentile for the gestational age. Maternal serum and fetal cord blood samples were collected from all participants and native thiol-disulfide exchanges were examined with automated method enabling the measurement of both sides of thiol-disulfide balance.

A novel immobilized N-chlorosuccinimide resin was developed for peptide disulfide bond formation in combinatorial libraries. The resin is prepared in a simple two-step process from commercial starting materials. Disulfide formation is initiated by adding a peptide solution to the resin, and excess reagent is removed by a convenient filtration upon completion of disulfide formation. The excitation of near-infrared (2+1)D solitons in liquid carbon disulfide is demonstrated due to the simultaneous contribution of the third- and fifth-order susceptibilities. Solitons propagating free from diffraction for more than 10 Rayleigh lengths although damped, were observed to support the proposed soliton behavior.
