The relationship of maternal characteristics and circulating progesterone concentrations with reproductive outcome in the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) after artificial insemination, with and without ovulation induction, and natural breeding.

Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) undergoing natural breeding and artificial insemination (AI) were examined to characterize serum progesterone concentrations and determine relationships among age, parity, and reproductive outcome. Progesterone profiles of five cycle types (n = 119 total cycles from 54 animals) were characterized as follows: (i) conception and production of a live term calf (conceptive-term, n = 73); (ii) conception and abortion after Day 60 (conceptive-abortion, n = 12); (iii) unknown conception status with prolonged, elevated progesterone and absence of a fetus (conce…

Differences in kinematics, kinetics, and muscle activity between underwater dolphin kicking and flutter kicking: multiple approaches using three-dimensional motion analysis, electromyography, and hydrodynamic simulation.

It is well-known among swimmers and coaches that the swimming speed of the underwater dolphin kick (UDK) is higher than that of the underwater flutter kick (UFK). This study aimed to clarify the differences in swimming performance between the two kicking styles in terms of kinematics, kinetics and muscle activity. Eight male swimmers performed UDK and UFK in a water flume at same effort levels. The three-dimensional motion analysis and measurement of surface electromyography for the left lower limb were performed. The fluid forces acting on the body and joint torques were estimated using Swums

Application of novel burst wave lithotripsy and ultrasonic propulsion technology for the treatment of ureteral calculi in a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and renal calculi in a harbor seal (Phoca vitulina).

Marine mammals may develop kidney stones, which can be challenging to treat. We describe burst wave lithotripsy (BWL) and ultrasonic propulsion to treat ureteral calculi in a 48-year-old female bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) and to reduce renal stone burden in a 23-year-old male harbor seal (Phoca vitulina). BWL and ultrasonic propulsion were delivered transcutaneously in sinusoidal ultrasound bursts to fragment and reposition stones. Targeting and monitoring were performed with real-time imaging integrated within the BWL system. Four dolphin stones were obtained and fragmented ex viv

First report of Brucella ceti-associated meningoencephalitis in a long-finned pilot whale Globicephala melas.

Fatal Brucella ceti infection with histological lesions specific to the central nervous system has been described in only 3 species of cetaceans: striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba, Atlantic white-sided dolphins Lagenorhynchus acutus and short-beaked common dolphins Delphinus delphis. This paper describes the first report of a B. ceti-associated meningoencephalitis in a long-finned pilot whale Globicephala melas, showing the increasing range of species susceptibility. Brucella was recovered in larger numbers from cerebrospinal fluid than from brain tissue and is the sample of choice for is…

Therapeutic effect of proprioceptive dolphin assisted activities on health-related quality of life and muscle tension, biomechanical and viscoelastic properties in major depressive disorder adults: case analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The case analysis method is widely used in evaluating dolphin assisted activities due to the lack of research participants. Despite other present diagnostic features adults with major depressive disorder experience psychomotor changes, dysphoria, anhedonia, impaired concentration, and suicidal thoughts. Increasing studies assess the positive effect of proprioceptive exercises in various depressive cases. METHODS: 14 adults diagnosed major depressive disorder included in this case study between September 2022 to April 2024. A two-week proprioceptive dolphin assisted activity prog

An Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis) severely injured by vessel collision: live rescue at sea, clinical care, and postmortem examination using a virtopsy-integrated approach.

BACKGROUND: Vessel collision induces blunt and sharp force traumas to aquatic animals and is a leading anthropogenic impact affecting cetaceans worldwide. Vessel collision is an important threat affecting vulnerable coastal cetaceans such as the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) which reside in coastal waters of Hong Kong amongst heavy marine traffic. CASE PRESENTATION: A severely injured subadult S. chinensis was sighted in the waters off southwestern Hong Kong with four gaping incision wounds on its dorsum. It was in poor body condition and seemed unable to use the fluke effe…

Morbillivirus infection in cetaceans stranded along the Italian coastline: pathological, immunohistochemical and biomolecular findings.

Morbilliviruses are recognized as biological agents highly impacting the health and conservation status of free-ranging cetaceans worldwide, as clearly exemplified by the two Dolphin Morbillivirus (DMV) epidemics of 1990-1992 and 2006-2008 among Mediterranean striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba). After these two epidemics, morbilliviral infection (MI) cases with peculiar neurobiological features were reported in striped dolphins stranded along the Spanish coastline. Affected cetaceans showed a subacute-to-chronic, non-suppurative encephalitis, with brain lesions strongly resembling those f…

Habitat partitioning, co-occurrence patterns, and mixed-species group formation in sympatric delphinids.

Numerous species have been reported to form mixed-species groups, however, little is known about the interplay between niche partitioning and mixed-species group formation. Furthermore, it is often unclear whether species come together by chance due to overlapping habitat preferences, by shared attraction to resources, or by attraction between them. We assessed habitat partitioning, co-occurrence patterns, and mixed-species group formation of sympatric Australian humpback (Sousa sahulensis) and Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) around the North West Cape, Western Australia, w…

Prevalence and genotype of Toxoplasma gondii in stranded Hawaiian cetaceans.

Toxoplasma gondii is a significant threat to endangered Hawaiian wildlife including birds and marine mammals. To estimate the prevalence of T. gondii in stranded cetaceans from 1997 to 2021 in Hawai'i, we tested tissues from 37 stranded spinner dolphins Stenella longirostris and 51 stranded individuals that represented 18 other cetacean species. DNA from cetacean tissue extracts were screened using a nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay targeting the Toxoplasmatinae internal transcribed spacer 1 of the nuclear ribosomal DNA. A positive result was obtained in 9 tissues examined for each…

Accuracy of soft tissue profile predictions using WebCeph and Dolphin software in non-growing skeletal Class II cases treated with upper premolar extractions: A retrospective comparative study.

INTRODUCTION: Aesthetic outcomes are a primary concern for adult orthodontic patients. Clinicians often rely on soft tissue simulation software, such as Dolphin Imaging (D-Tech) and WebCeph (D-Tech), to manage patient expectations. This study aimed to compare the accuracy of these two tools in predicting soft tissue profile changes in non-growing skeletal Class II patients treated with maxillary first premolar extractions. METHODS: A retrospective comparative study was conducted on patients treated by the same practitioner with bilateral maxillary first premolar extractions and maximum anchor

Serological Investigation for Brucella ceti in Cetaceans from the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea.

Neurobrucellosis in cetaceans, caused by Brucella ceti, is a relevant cause of death in striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) from the Mediterranean Sea. Serological tests are not used as a routinary technique for the diagnosis of this infection. We briefly describe the pathological findings of nine free-ranging stranded cetaceans diagnosed with Brucella disease or infection in our veterinary necropsy service from 2012 to 2022. The findings included focal diskospondylitis and non-suppurative meningitis, choroiditis and radiculitis. Additionally, an exploratory serological study was conducte…

Genetic diversity and population structure of Synthesium pontoporiae (Digenea, Brachycladiidae) linked to its definitive host stocks, the endangered Franciscana dolphin, Pontoporia blainvillei (Pontoporiidae) off the coast of Brazil and Argentina.

Pontoporia blainvillei (Gervais and d'Orbigny, 1844) is an endangered small cetacean endemic to South America with four Franciscana Management Areas (FMA) recognized as different population stocks. The role of the intestinal parasite Synthesium pontoporiae (Digenea: Brachycladiidae) as a possible biological marker to differentiate P. blainvillei stocks was evaluated using nuclear and mitochondrial DNA markers. Internal transcribed sequence 1 and 2 (ITS1 and ITS2) regions of S. pontoporiae did not show intraspecific variability. The mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit 3 (ND3) and cytochrom

Identification of mercury and other metals complexes with metallothioneins in dolphin liver by hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography with the parallel detection by ICP MS and electrospray hybrid linear/orbital trap MS/MS.

A novel analytical procedure for the identification of metal (Hg, Cd, Cu, Zn) complexes with individual metallothionein (MT) isoforms in biological tissues by electrospray MS/MS was developed. The sample preparation was reduced to three rapid steps: the two-fold dilution of the sample cytosol with acetonitrile, the recovery of the supernatant containing MT-complexes by centrifugation and its concentration under nitrogen flow. The replacement of reversed phase HPLC by hydrophilic interaction LC (HILIC) allowed the preservation of the unstable and low abundant metallothionein zinc-mercury mixed
