Predictors and consequences of unplanned drinking among young adults.

OBJECTIVE: Unplanned drinking, or drinking that violates intentions to limit alcohol consumption, has been linked to significant alcohol-related consequences in college students; however, predictors and outcomes remain incompletely understood among other populations of young adults. This study identified person- and event-level predictors of unplanned drinking and explore the association of unplanned drinking with negative alcohol-related consequences in a racially and educationally diverse cohort of young adults. METHOD: A total of 938 young adults (aged 18-25; 70 % female; 60 % non-college;…

Daily Associations Between Injunctive Drinking Norms and Alcohol Consumption.

OBJECTIVE: Perception of others' approval of alcohol use (i.e., injunctive drinking norms) is strongly predictive of alcohol use, particularly among young adults. Although between-person injunctive norms predict alcohol use, there is evidence of within-person fluctuations in the relationship between norms and drinking. The current study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to test within-person, day-level associations between injunctive norms and alcohol use and to test whether social context moderated this association. METHOD: Participants (n = 83, M age = 24.0 years, 50.9% female) com…

Disinfection byproducts in US drinking water and cancer mortality.

Trihalomethanes, the main drinking water disinfection byproducts, may be carcinogenic and are regulated to amaximum total trihalomethanes (TTHM) of 80 µg/l in the US. We aimed to determine whether total and individual trihalomethanes in drinking water across the US are associated with higher cancer mortality in 6,260 adult participants to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 1999 to 2008 followed for mortality until 2019 (median: 14.4 years). At baseline, the geometric mean (standard error) of TTHM in drinking water was 9.61 (0.85) µg/l. During follow-up, 873 deaths occur…

Alcohol Use Severity, Anger and Drinking Motives among Firefighters.

Background: Firefighters represent an understudied population with high rates of hazardous alcohol use and alcohol use disorder. This population is also at an increased risk of mental health disorders and related symptoms such as anger. Anger is a relatively understudied negative mood state with clinical relevance to alcohol use among firefighters. Anger is associated with greater alcohol use and may spur more approach-motivated reasons for drinking compared to other negative emotions. Objectives: This study sought to examine: 1. whether anger significantly contributes to alcohol use severity …

Iron-deficiency anaemia: the perils of excessive milk-drinking.

Iron-deficiency anaemia is a widespread and largely preventable problem in the paediatric population, with numerous potential sequelae. We describe the case of a 2-year-old girl presenting with non-specific symptoms, who was found to be iron-deficient and anaemic, in the context of excessive cow's milk consumption. We explore the patient's diagnostic journey, including a neurological deterioration and the link between her iron deficiency and the final diagnosis.

Alcohol binge-drinking damage on the vestibulo-oculomotor reflex.

PURPOSE: Binge drinking is associated with several adverse effects in multiple organs. This study aimed at evaluating the effects of a binge-like-drinking on the vestibulo-oculomotor reflex (VOR) using the video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) and the functional Head Impulse Test (fHIT). METHODS: Eleven healthy men (age range 32-35 years) with moderate drinking habits and no history of vestibular dysfunction were enrolled. A preliminary assessment of breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) to check for zero alcohol value and a pre-intake evaluation of VOR using the vHIT and the fHIT were carried on. The…

Arsenic in US correctional facility drinking water, 2006-2011.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the quality of drinking water in US correctional facilities (e.g. detention centers, prisons, jails, etc.). Our objective was to determine if incarcerated persons are at risk for chronic, elevated arsenic exposure relative to the non-incarcerated US population, particularly in the Southwestern US where public water and groundwater arsenic concentrations are high compared to the rest of the US. METHODS: We analyzed 230,158 arsenic monitoring records from 37,086 community water systems (CWSs) from the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Third Six Year Revie…

Alcohol Binge Drinking: Negative and Positive Valence System Abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: Each year, 3 million deaths occur owing to alcohol misuse. Translational studies are crucial to translate preclinical findings to patients. Preclinical studies have highlighted abnormalities in specific brain systems, with these forming the basis of allostasis theory. However, few studies have tested predictions in humans using neuroimaging. METHODS: We used a Research Domain Criteria approach to test allostasis theory predictions of blunted positive valence system (PVS) and abnormally increased negative valence system (NVS) responses in 57 binge alcohol drinking subjects and heal…

Repercussions of low fructose-drinking water in male rats.

Fructose consumption has increased worldwide, and it has been associated with the development of metabolic diseases such as insulin resistance (IR) and steatosis. The aim was to evaluate if lower fructose concentrations may cause pancreatic structural abnormalities, leading to a glucose intolerance without steatosis in male rats. Young male rats orally received 7% fructose solution for 12 weeks. Body weight, food, water, and energy intake were measured. An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed. After final experimental period, all rats were anaesthetized and killed. Blood samples we

Environmental Context Influences Visual Attention to Responsible Drinking Messages.

AIMS: Responsible drinking messages (RDMs) are used as a key tool to reduce alcohol-related harms. A common form of RDM is in a poster format displayed in places such as bars, bus stops and toilet cubicles. However, evidence for the effectiveness of RDMs remains limited. Moreover, it is not known how environmental contexts (e.g. the number of alcohol-related cues in the environment) impact how such RDMs are interacted with, nor how this in turn affects their efficacy. METHODS: One hundred participants completed a pseudo taste preference task in either in a bar laboratory (alcohol cue rich env…

Monitoring alcohol use in heavy drinking soup kitchen attendees.

Rates of heavy alcohol use in soup kitchen attendees range from 30% to 38%, but these data are based entirely on self-reported drinking. Little is known about the intensity or frequency of drinking in this population. We assessed alcohol use transdermally every 30 min over a 3-week period among heavy drinkers who attended local soup kitchens. In addition to transdermal alcohol monitoring, participants were randomly assigned to daily breath alcohol monitoring with or without reinforcement for alcohol-negative breath samples (BrAC). Analyses assessed feasibility of transdermal monitoring and exa…

Drinking Water Nitrate and Human Health: An Updated Review.

Nitrate levels in our water resources have increased in many areas of the world largely due to applications of inorganic fertilizer and animal manure in agricultural areas. The regulatory limit for nitrate in public drinking water supplies was set to protect against infant methemoglobinemia, but other health effects were not considered. Risk of specific cancers and birth defects may be increased when nitrate is ingested under conditions that increase formation of N-nitroso compounds. We previously reviewed epidemiologic studies before 2005 of nitrate intake from drinking water and cancer, adve…

Dynamics of Biofilm Regrowth in Drinking Water Distribution Systems.

UNLABELLED: The majority of biomass within water distribution systems is in the form of attached biofilm. This is known to be central to drinking water quality degradation following treatment, yet little understanding of the dynamics of these highly heterogeneous communities exists. This paper presents original information on such dynamics, with findings demonstrating patterns of material accumulation, seasonality, and influential factors. Rigorous flushing operations repeated over a 1-year period on an operational chlorinated system in the United Kingdom are presented here. Intensive monitori…

Drinking water toxicity study of the environmental contaminant--Bromate.

Bromate is a byproduct of water disinfection that is produced when waters contain bromide treated with ozone. To investigate the level of the toxicity of bromate and find the most sensitive indicators in a short time, a series of toxicological assessments were conducted including the acute toxicity, cumulative toxicity, genetic toxicity and subacute toxicity of bromate (using Potassium Bromate to represent bromate). The LD50 of orally administered Potassium Bromate was 215 mg/kg in Wistar rats and 464 mg/kg in ICR mice. The cumulative toxicity of Potassium Bromate was not obvious. The Ames tes

Problematic drinking and physiological responses among female college students.

Problematic drinking is a widespread problem among college students, and can contribute to alcohol dependence during later adulthood, particularly among females. The current study assessed vulnerability for alcohol-related consequences by comparing self-reported drinking with coping styles and physiological and behavioral stress responses during a challenging task. Cardiovascular measurements and saliva samples were taken from 88 female students at the beginning of the experiment and after the task. Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) activity was measured by assessing cortisol and dehydroepi…
