Effects of behavioral intervention components to increase COVID-19 testing for African American/Black and Latine frontline essential workers not up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccination: Results of an optimization randomized controlled trial.

Racial/ethnic disparities in COVID-19, including incidence, hospitalization, and death rates, are serious and persistent. Among those at highest risk for COVID-19 and its adverse effects are African American/Black and Latine (AABL) frontline essential workers in public-facing occupations (e.g., food services, retail). Testing for COVID-19 in various scenarios (when exposed or symptomatic, regular screening testing) is an essential component of the COVID-19 control strategy in the United States. However, AABL frontline workers have serious barriers to COVID-19 testing at the individual (insuffi

Protocol for pragmatic randomised trial: integrating electronic health record-based behavioural economic 'nudges' into the electronic health record to reduce preoperative testing for patients undergoing cataract surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Robust randomised trial data have shown that routine preoperative (pre-op) testing for cataract surgery patients is inappropriate. While guidelines have discouraged testing since 2002, cataract pre-op testing rates have remained unchanged since the 1990s. Given the challenges of reducing low-value care despite strong consensus around the evidence, innovative approaches are needed to promote high-value care. This trial evaluates the impact of an interdisciplinary electronic health record (EHR) intervention that is informed by behavioural economic theory. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Thi

Exposure to Poverty and Productivity.

We study whether exposure to poverty can induce affective states that decrease productivity. In a controlled laboratory setting, we find that subjects randomly assigned to a treatment, in which they view a video featuring individuals that live in extreme poverty, exhibit lower subsequent productivity compared to subjects assigned to a control treatment. Questionnaire responses, as well as facial recognition software, provide quantitative measures of the affective state evoked by the two treatments. Subjects exposed to images of poverty experience a more negative affective state than those in t

Caregiver unresolved loss and abuse and child behavior problems: intergenerational effects in a high-risk sample.

This study examines the intergenerational effects of caregivers' unresolved loss and abuse on children's behavior problems from middle childhood to early adolescence in an economically disadvantaged sample. One hundred twenty-four caregivers completed the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) and a lifetime trauma interview during the age 13 wave of the study. Child behavior problems were assessed at four time points (ages 6, 8, 10, and 13) with teacher-reported Child Behavior Checklist total problem scales. The children of insecure caregivers with unresolved loss showed a consistent pattern of inc

Beyond "toxicity:" Rethinking rage, rivalry, and regulation in online games.

The nomenclature used to describe harmful behavior in gaming remains vague and inconsistently applied. "Toxicity" has become the dominant label, yet it functions as an umbrella term encompassing heterogeneous behaviors that differ by context, intent, and cultural norms. This conceptual ambiguity obscures underlying psychological mechanisms that are critical for designing effective interventions. This article looks beyond descriptors to focus on psychological dynamics and how they can inform effective prevention efforts. We conducted a conceptual analysis integrating mimetic theory with existin

Factors Influencing Guardians' Health-Seeking Decisions for Children With Burkitt Lymphoma in Northern and Central Malawi.

BACKGROUND: The survival of children with Burkitt lymphoma (BL) in sub-Saharan Africa is disproportionately low compared to high-income countries. In Malawi, many of these children are diagnosed in advanced stages. Early and accurate diagnosis is critical to survival of children with BL. This qualitative study evaluates factors influencing health-seeking decisions of guardians of children with BL in Northern and Central Malawi. METHODS: We conducted in-depth interviews of guardians of children (<18 years) diagnosed with BL and admitted to the Pediatric Oncology Unit at Kamuzu Central Hospital

Assessing key behavioural theories of drought risk adaptation: Evidence from rural Kenya.

The Horn of Africa Drylands are increasingly experiencing severe droughts, which impose a threat on traditional livelihood strategies. Understanding adaptation behavior in rural communities is key to helping reduce the impact of these droughts. We investigate adaptation behavior by assessing four established economic and social psychological theories on decision making under risk: expected utility theory (EUT), rank dependent utility theory (RDU), protection motivation theory (PMT), and theory of planned behavior (PMT). To measure adaptation behavior and the theory constructs, we conducted a h

A randomized controlled trial of gamification to increase physical activity among black and Hispanic breast and prostate cancer survivors: Rationale and design of the ALLSTAR clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of breast and prostate cancer, especially those that are Black and/or Hispanic, are at high risk for cardiovascular events. Physical activity can reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in cancer survivors, but Black and Hispanic people are less likely to engage in routine physical activity. Concepts from behavioral economics have been used to design scalable, low-touch gamification interventions that increase physical activity in individuals at high risk for cardiovascular events, but the effectiveness of these strategies in Black and Hispanic survivors of breast and pr

Decreasing intraocular pressure significantly improves retinal vessel density, cytoarchitecture and visual function in rodent oxygen induced retinopathy.

We attempted to explore a noninvasive, easily applicable and economically affordable therapy for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Rat pups were raised in 80% oxygen from postnatal day 7 to P12, and returned to room air. Travoprost eye drops were administered twice a day for 7 days, to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) by about 20%. Immunohistochemical staining was performed to visualize vessel endothelial cells, to analyze retinal neurons and cytoarchitecture. Behavioral experiments were carried out to test visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. At the end of the 7-day treatment, the number

Stereotypic behavioral responses to free-base cocaine and the development of behavioral sensitization in Drosophila.

Cocaine abuse is a large social and economic problem that has received much public and scientific attention in recent years. Rodent and primate models have been used to study the behavioral and neurological effects of cocaine. Repeated intermittent doses of cocaine lead to progressive increases in both locomotor activity and stereotyped behaviors known as 'reverse tolerance' or behavioral sensitization, which may model the behavioral and neurochemical processes occurring in cocaine-addicted humans [1]. The biological basis of sensitization is poorly understood. We report that free-base cocaine

Revisiting the Relation Between Steroid Hormones and Unethicality in an Exploratory, Longitudinal Study With Female Participants.

Research on the relation between hormones and unethical behaviors and tendencies has provided mixed results, hindering the understanding of the potential biological regulation of unethical behaviors and tendencies. We conducted an exploratory, longitudinal study (N = 257 women) allowing to estimate relations between, on the one hand, steroid hormones (testosterone, cortisol, estradiol, and progesterone) and conception probability and, on the other hand, a broad variety of measures related to unethicality (self-reported personality variables, cheating in committed relationships, self-serving ec

Teenage fertility and its social integration correlates: a control theory explanation.

"This study uses control theory to explain teenage fertility in one [U.S.] southeastern state. Control theory explains deviance from societal norms in terms of weak social bonding or integration. An important assumption of the study is that teenage parenting violates American parenting norms, and can thus be conceptualized as deviant behavior. Consequently, this study hypothesizes that teenage fertility should covary with measures of social integration. This study uses data from 64 parishes in Louisiana, and the results suggest that measures of social integration (i.e., divorce rates, percenta

Stress and episodic future thinking: Effects on temporal window and alcohol demand.

BACKGROUND: Stress maintains problematic alcohol use, so it is particularly important to identify interventions that effectively reduce the desire for alcohol even in the context of high stress. Reinforcer Pathology Theory suggests that stress increases alcohol demand by inducing short-term thinking. One intervention that targets this mechanism is episodic future thinking (EFT), which involves vividly imagining personal future events and has been shown to reduce short-term thinking and accompanying preferences for immediate rewards like alcohol. These shared mechanisms suggest that EFT may be

Default settings affect children's decisions about whether to be honest.

Behavioral economics research has revealed that our decision-making can be biased by default settings. That is, all other things being equal, adults tend to choose default options even when the effort involved in choosing other options is minimal. Extensive evidence shows that default settings can systematically influence adult decisions in a wide variety of domains (e.g., pension choices, organ donation), but little is known about their developmental origin. Of interest in the present research is whether default settings can influence young children's decisions about whether to be honest. We

Risk Preferences, Rationality of Choices, and Willingness to Pay for Preventive Medicine in Patients with Graves' Thyrotoxicosis.

PURPOSE: Patients with thyrotoxicosis show neuropsychological changes, and these may damage the quality of informed consent in clinical practice. Therefore, we examined patients' real-life preferences to assess whether change in risk preferences was dependent on thyroid function state. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The participants were 86 patients who were newly diagnosed with Graves' thyrotoxicosis between 1 January and 31 December 2018 (group A), and an additional 33 euthyroid patients diagnosed before 2018 (group B). In a survey conducted via a questionnaire based on the concept of behavioral eco

The Impact of Including Costs and Outcomes of Dementia in a Health Economic Model to Evaluate Lifestyle Interventions to Prevent Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease.

OBJECTIVES: Economic evaluations of lifestyle interventions, which aim to prevent diabetes/cardiovascular disease (CVD), have not included dementia. Lifestyle interventions decrease dementia risk and extend life expectancy, leading to competing effects on health care costs. We aim to demonstrate the feasibility of including dementia in a public health cost-effectiveness analysis and quantify the overall impacts accounting for these competing effects. METHODS: The School for Public Health Research (SPHR) diabetes prevention model describes individuals' risk of type 2 diabetes, microvascular ou
