Surgical Training for a Disaster: Preparation of Surgical Trainees for Victims of Conflict.

INTRODUCTION: With increasing global unrest and military physician shortages potentially leading to a surgeon draft, we sought to evaluate the readiness of graduating general surgery residents to care for casualties of war. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated the National Data Reports of Surgery Case Logs for general surgery residents from 2009 to 2018 to quantify experience with key procedures that provide critical skills required for wartime surgery. Reported cases from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for graduating residents from civilian and military residency pro

Teaching medicine interns minimum geriatrics competencies within a "4 + 2" schedule.

The increased ambulatory training time in an "X + Y" (inpatient + ambulatory) residency schedule affords more opportunities to teach geriatrics principles of care. We describe our internal medicine (IM) residency program's experience in teaching the IM-family medicine (FM) minimum geriatrics competencies (MGC) during a longitudinal geriatrics rotation embedded within interns' yearlong "4 + 2" schedule. Interns spend 1 day of the ambulatory block in a geriatrics outpatient setting (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, house calls, nursing home), during which geriatrics division facult

Early procedural training increases anesthesiology residents' clinical production: a comparative pre-post study of the payoff in clinical training.

BACKGROUND: Competency-based education has been shown to enhance clinical skills, improve patient care, and reduce number of complications resulting in a better return on investments. Residents constitute an important workforce at many hospitals. Yet, the effect of training on residents' contribution to production in patient care is scarcely studied. This study evaluated the effects of early competency-based procedural training on residents' contribution to patient care in central venous catheterization and spinal and epidural anesthesia. METHODS: The design was a non-randomized cohort study

Strengthening the Clinical Learning Environment by Mandate-Implementing the ACGME Common Program Requirements.

RATIONALE: Three years ago, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) introduced updated Common Program Requirements in recognition of the need to further promote resident and faculty member well-being and patient safety. The ACGME acknowledged residencies would need time to comply with new requirements. This grace period, however, concluded as of July 1, 2019, and programs now risk citations for failure to implement new requirements. METHODS AND RESULTS: The authors, members of the Association of Program Directors in Radiology Common Program Requirements Ad Hoc committ

A novel simulator model and standardized assessment tools for fine needle aspiration cytology training.

OBJECTIVES: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is an invaluable diagnostic procedure for evaluation of lesions; however, acquisition of diagnostic material is dependent on the skill of the practitioner. We report a novel patient simulator for teaching the FNA procedure and structured assessment tools for educators and learners. METHODS: We created a novel simulator model for FNA training, employed a standardized teaching module, and assessed procedure utility in medical students. Groups of students completed training using a commercial version of the model, and underwent structured evaluation using

Nursing informatics: the key to unlocking contemporary nursing practice.

Nursing informatics is a relatively new nursing specialty. Recognized by the American Nurses' Association in 1992, this field within nursing has grown exponentially. Once the purview of highly specialized individuals, nursing informatics has now crept into all dimensions of nursing, from domain of advanced nurse practitioners to prominence in critical care nursing. Nowhere is the management and processing of health-related information more important than in the care of the critically ill patient. Fast-paced environments, split-second decision making, wireless communications, monitoring systems

[The founding of the chair of comparative embryogeny at the Collège de France (1844)].

The first chair of embryology was founded in 1844 at the College de France. Yet the founding met with hostility. The first occupant Victor Coste (1807-1873) was imposed on the institution. The administrator-professors of the College de France criticized the governmental procedure. Some professors, such as Georges-Louis Duvernoy, made a stand against the appointment of the young embryologist. Duvenoy continued for several years to protest against Coste's teachings at the College of France. But Coste was tacked by De Blainville and eventually Flourens. Credit should be given to Coste for having

Training in human genetics in the United States.

A national study of existing and future human resource needs in the field of human genetics has never been conducted. Published figures of the existing levels of human genetics training are not available. This report reviews the current status of graduate training in human genetics in the US. Issues of certification, accreditation, enrollment and recommendations for future training needs are also discussed. As of 1989, 109 US programs offered training at the graduate or postgraduate level in human genetics. Sixty-seven percent were degree-granting programs. A 20% increase in the number of prog

Education Research: EEG Education in Child Neurology and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Residencies: A Survey of US and Canadian Program Directors.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In the United States, many child neurologists (CNs) and neurodevelopmental disability (NDD) specialists who read EEGs in clinical practice had no additional EEG training other than what was received during residency. This practice highlights the importance of ensuring that CN/NDD residents achieve EEG competence before graduation. However, prior survey-based evidence showed that roughly a third of graduating CN residents in the United States do not feel confident interpreting EEGs independently. As part of a needs assessment, we conducted a descriptive study characte

Perception of online learning, knowledge assessment, and clinical skills among third-year ophthalmology residents studying during the COVID-19 pandemic in Thailand.

Given the high predicted probability of future pandemics, it is essentially important that we understand the benefits and drawbacks of online learning compared to traditional in-class learning-especially in specialized education like healthcare-related educational settings. This is the first study to investigate the first-person perception of online learning, knowledge assessment, and longitudinal confidence in clinical skills among third-year ophthalmology residents studying during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic in Thailand. This survey-based study enrolled all 74 ophthalmologists that graduated

Anesthesia residency training in regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine: a competency-based model curriculum.

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education has shifted to competency-based medical education. This educational framework requires the description of educational outcomes based on the knowledge, skills and behaviors expected of competent trainees. It also requires an assessment program to provide formative feedback to trainees as they progress to competency in each outcome. Critical to the success of a curriculum is its practical implementation. This article describes the development of model curricula for anesthesiology residency training in regional anesthesia and acute pain med

Improving women's healthcare providers' knowledge about fragile X-associated primary ovarian insufficiency through a novel educational tool.

PURPOSE: Gaps in knowledge among women's healthcare providers have contributed to diagnostic delays and delayed care for women with fragile X-associated primary ovarian insufficiency (FXPOI). The objective of this study was to assess if an educational tool could improve women's healthcare providers' knowledge of FXPOI. METHODS: A one-page educational tool about the premutation and FXPOI was developed. To assess the impact, a pre- and post-intervention survey was given to 95 providers. The post-intervention survey was emailed approximately 1 month after the pre-intervention survey. Surveys con

Self-perceived competencies of Master of Public Health graduates and recommendations for programs in South Africa.

The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree is a key qualification for public health practice in low- and middle-income countries. Graduates entering practice should possess a range of competencies to address complex health issues in managerial, technical or research positions. As competencies of graduates exiting South African MPH programs are unknown, a consortium of academics from South African universities conducted an on-line survey of alumni exiting between 2012-2016, to determine their self-reported public health competencies and their recommendations for improving academic programs. Compe

American Brachytherapy Society (ABS) competencies for endobronchial/esophageal brachytherapy.

Brachytherapy approaches integrate a diverse skillset in the management of a wide range of diseases. These approaches include key clinical decision-making skills as well as a unique set of procedural skills. Consensus statement training objectives for brachytherapy were previously assembled and published by the American Brachytherapy Society. As a continuation of this effort, the development of focused competencies in line with the US Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education Milestones was recommended. This work is designed to create a resource to support individual programs and li

Physician attitudes regarding latent tuberculosis infection: international vs. U.S. medical graduates.

Tuberculosis in the U.S. is increasingly noted among the foreign-born, with many individuals at risk being managed by international medical graduates (IMGs). We utilized anonymous surveys using hypothetical scenarios to assess and compare the attitudes of IMGs and U.S. medical graduates regarding the treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) to identify how attitudes and intentions may influence physician behavior. IMGs were less likely to treat LTBI in almost all scenarios. Educational efforts should focus on IMGs to encourage attitudes more consistent with U.S. guidelines.
