Technology-Based Interventions to Promote Diabetes Self-Management Behaviors for Persons Newly Diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) management is complex and requires daily personal involvement and self-management skills to maintain optimal glycemic levels and improve health outcomes. Engagement in self-management behaviors in the early years of diagnosis can be challenging due to prevailing psychosocial factors present during this critical transition period, coupled with a lack of information, support, and skills. Technology-based diabetes self-management interventions can improve access to needed education and support, and their effectiveness in the general T2D population is well

"Without handicap": issues of medical schools and physically disabled students.

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 requires that access to education not be denied simply on the basis of disability. The law requires definition of "basic qualifications" required of all applicants, "essential elements" of the curriculum, and whether accommodation would alter the "fundamental nature" of the learning experience or impose "undue burden." Medical schools have a very low proportion of physically disabled students, which the author argues is largely a result of schools' conception of the "undifferentiated graduate" as being capable of performing the history, physical exam

The lost art of the history and physical.

The important contribution of the history and physical in making a correct medical diagnosis has been known for centuries. Despite this, these skills are being undermined by technology that many physicians mistakenly believe to be the new gold standard. The authors report 2 cases in which the history and physical trumped technology in making the correct diagnosis. Medical educators need to reemphasize the importance of the history and physical. This will require changes in curriculum and intense faculty development.

Cardiac Arrest: Can Technology Be the Solution?

Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) mortality remains alarmingly high in most countries. The majority of pharmacological attempts to improve outcomes have failed. Randomized trials have shown limited survival benefits with vasopressin, fibrinolysis, amiodarone, or lidocaine. Even the benefits of adrenaline remain a matter of debate. In this context, relying on technology may seem appealing. However, technological strategies have also yielded disappointing results. This is exemplified by automated external chest compression devices. When first introduced, theoretical models, animal studies, a

Challenges and opportunities for educating health professionals after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The education of health professionals substantially changed before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. A 2010 Lancet Commission examined the 100-year history of health-professional education, beginning with the 1910 Flexner report. Since the publication of the Lancet Commission, several transformative developments have happened, including in competency-based education, interprofessional education, and the large-scale application of information technology to education. Although the COVID-19 pandemic did not initiate these developments, it increased their implementation, and they are likel

Evaluation of a patient educational brochure to increase knowledge of cervical cancer screening among women living with HIV in La Romana.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is among the most preventable human malignancies, yet it’s the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the Dominican Republic. Among those who are most at risk for cervical cancer are women living with HIV (WLH) who face a six-fold increased risk compared to the general population. Given patient barriers to uptake of cervical cancer screening, we created a patient-facing brochure on cervical cancer to be distributed within a clinic, Clínica de Familia, which serves WLH in La Romana, Dominican Republic. The goals of this paper are to summarize the finding

Acceptability of Neuroscientific Interventions in Education.

Researchers are increasingly applying neuroscience technologies that probe or manipulate the brain to improve educational outcomes. However, their use remains fraught with ethical controversies. Here, we investigate the acceptability of neuroscience applications to educational practice in two groups of young adults: those studying bioscience who will be driving future basic neuroscience research and technology transfer, and those studying education who will be choosing among neuroscience-derived applications for their students. Respondents rated the acceptability of six scenarios describing ne
