Spatially distributed sequential stimulation reduces muscle fatigue during neuromuscular electrical stimulation.

A critical limitation with neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) approach is the rapid onset of muscle fatigue during repeated contractions, which results in the muscle force decay and slowing of muscle contractile properties. In our previous study, we demonstrated that spatially distributed sequential stimulation (SDSS) show a drastically greater fatigue-reducing ability compared to a conventional, single active electrode stimulation (SES) with an individual with spinal cord injury when applied for plantar flexors. The purpose of the present study is to explore the fatigue-reducing abil

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation vs Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation With Music in Persistent Low-Back Pain: Protocol for a Pilot Feasibility Trial.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) works on the principle of the gate control theory of pain and is used as a nonpharmacological pain management intervention. Music therapy or listening to self-selected music has also been shown to reduce pain intensity, anxiety, and depression. There has been no published literature that has explored whether these modalities can work synergistically. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to test the feasibility of a clinical trial comparing TENS alone to TENS combined with self-selected music in participants with persistent low-back pain las

Electrical pudendal nerve stimulation versus pelvic floor muscle training with transrectal electrical stimulation for post-radical prostatectomy incontinence: a cohort study.

Electrical pudendal nerve stimulation (EPNS) has been proposed as a clinic-based option for post-prostatectomy incontinence (PPI), but comparative evidence is limited. We conducted a retrospective cohort study across three medical centers (2018-2022) comparing EPNS (24 sessions over eight weeks) with pelvic-floor muscle training plus transrectal electrical stimulation (PFMT + TES). Primary outcomes were changes from baseline to end of treatment in the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Urinary Incontinence Short Form (ICIQ-UI SF) score and 24-hr pad-test urine loss. The I

Open-tES: An open-source stimulator for transcranial electrical stimulation designed for rodent research.

Non-invasive neuromodulatory techniques, including transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), have been shown to modulate neuronal function and are used both in cognitive neuroscience and to treat neuropsychiatric conditions. In this context, animal models provide a powerful tool to identify the neurobiological mechanisms of action of tDCS. However, finding a current generator that is easily usable and which allows a wide range of stimulation parameters can be difficult and/or expensive. Here, we introduce the Open-tES device, a project under a Creative Commons License (CC BY, SA 4.0) sha

Programmed electrical stimulation in healed myocardial infarction using a standardized ventricular stimulation protocol.

The diagnostic accuracy of programmed electrical stimulation was prospectively assessed in 111 patients with myocardial infarction (MI) with or without a history of spontaneous ventricular arrhythmias. In 29 patients neither ventricular tachycardia (VT) nor episodes of 10 premature ventricular depolarizations per hour was documented. Fifty patients had documented nonsustained VT and 32 had sustained monomorphic VT. One and 2 extrastimuli (twice diastolic threshold, 2 ms in duration) were given during sinus rhythm and ventricular pacing at 100, 120 and 140 beats/min in the right ventricular ape

Effects of feedback stimulation training and cyclical electrical stimulation on knee extension in hemiparetic patients.

Positional feedback stimulation training and cyclical electrical stimulation were used in combination as a treatment for facilitating knee extension in hemiparetic patients. Forty adult hemiparetic patients who demonstrated minimal active control of their quadriceps femoris muscles were randomly assigned to control or study groups. The control patients received a program of physical therapy, and the study patients received the positional feedback stimulation training in addition to their therapy program. The stimulation training provided the patient with immediate auditory and visual feedback

Electric muscle stimulation attenuates neuroinflammation and improves the outcome of acute ischemic stroke in mice.

Acute ischemic stroke is a major cause of death and disability, yet many patients cannot engage in early rehabilitation due to severe motor deficits. Resulting immobility accelerates muscle atrophy and systemic inflammation, highlighting muscle-brain interactions as potential therapeutic targets. Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) provides a non-volitional means of activating skeletal muscle and may mimic key neuroprotective features of exercise. We tested whether hyperacute EMS modulates muscle-to-brain signaling to improve stroke outcomes. Transient middle cerebral artery occlusion was indu

Effects of F1-F2 Frequency Spacing on Spectral Integration in Combined Electric and Acoustic Stimulation.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to measure the effects of frequency spacing (i.e., F2 minus F1) on spectral integration for vowel perception in simulated bilateral electric-acoustic stimulation (BiEAS), electric-acoustic stimulation (EAS), and bimodal hearing. METHOD: Twenty listeners with typical hearing participated in synthetic vowel recognition. Four vowels were used with varying frequency spacings (/ͻ/: 270 Hz, /ʊ/: 653 Hz, /æ/: 1040 Hz, and /I/: 1607 Hz). F1 was acoustically simulated with a band-pass filtering, while F2 was electrically simulated using an eight-channel sine wave voc

Minimizing electric fields and increasing peripheral nerve stimulation thresholds using a body gradient array coil.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the performance of gradient array coils in minimizing switched-gradient-induced electric fields (E-fields) and improving peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) thresholds while generating gradient fields with adjustable linearity across customizable regions of linearity (ROLs). METHODS: A body gradient array coil is used to reduce the induced E-fields on the surface of a body model by modulating applied currents. This is achieved by performing an optimization problem with the peak E-field as the objective function and current amplitudes as unknown variables. Coil dimension

Estimation of individually induced e-field strength during transcranial electric stimulation using the head circumference.

BACKGROUND: Head and brain anatomy have been related to e-field strength induced by transcranial electrical stimulation (tES). Individualization based on anatomic factors require high-quality structural magnetic resonance images, which are not always available. Head circumference (HC) can serve as an alternative means, but its linkage to electric field strength has not yet been established. METHODS: We simulated electric fields induced by tES based on individual T1w- and T2w-images of 47 healthy adults, for four conventional ("standard") and four corresponding focal ("4x1") electrode montages

Electrode montage-dependent intracranial variability in electric fields induced by cerebellar transcranial direct current stimulation.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is an increasingly popular tool to investigate the involvement of the cerebellum in a variety of brain functions and pathologies. However, heterogeneity and small effect sizes remain a common issue. One potential cause may be interindividual variability of the electric fields induced by tDCS. Here, we compared electric field distributions and directions between two conventionally used electrode montages (i.e., one placing the return electrode over the ipsilateral buccinator muscle and one placing the return electrode [25 and 35 cm2 surface area, r

Realistic volumetric-approach to simulate transcranial electric stimulation-ROAST-a fully automated open-source pipeline.

OBJECTIVE: Research in the area of transcranial electrical stimulation (TES) often relies on computational models of current flow in the brain. Models are built based on magnetic resonance images (MRI) of the human head to capture detailed individual anatomy. To simulate current flow on an individual, the subject's MRI is segmented, virtual electrodes are placed on this anatomical model, the volume is tessellated into a mesh, and a finite element model (FEM) is solved numerically to estimate the current flow. Various software tools are available for each of these steps, as well as processing p

A computational pipeline to find lobule-specific electric field distribution during non-invasive cerebellar stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebellar Transcranial direct current stimulation (ctDCS) of cerebellar lobules is challenging due to the complexity of the cerebellar structure. Therefore, we present a freely available computational pipeline to determine the subject-specific lobule-specific electric field distribution during ctDCS. METHODS: The computational pipeline isolates subject-specific cerebellar lobules based on a spatially unbiased atlas template (SUIT) for the cerebellum, and then calculates the lobule-specific electric field distribution during ctDCS. The computational pipeline was tested using Colin2

Value and limitations of intracranial recordings for validating electric field modeling for transcranial brain stimulation.

Comparing electric field simulations from individualized head models against in-vivo intra-cranial recordings is considered the gold standard for direct validation of computational field modeling for transcranial brain stimulation and brain mapping techniques such as electro- and magnetoencephalography. The measurements also help to improve simulation accuracy by pinning down the factors having the largest influence on the simulations. Here we compare field simulations from four different automated pipelines against intracranial voltage recordings in an existing dataset of 14 epilepsy patients
