Impacts of dietary selenium deficiency on metabolic phenotypes of diet-restricted GPX1-overexpressing mice.

We previously reported a spontaneous development of type 2 diabetes-like phenotypes in glutathione peroxidase-1 (GPX1)-overexpressing (OE) mice. Diet restriction of these mice rescued all their phenotypes, except for hyperinsulinemia and hypersecretion of insulin. This study was to determine whether dietary Se deficiency eliminated these two primary effects of GPX1 overproduction. Forty-seven male OE and wild-type (WT) mice were fed an Se-adequate (0.4 mg Se/kg) or deficient (<0.02 mg Se/kg) diet at 2 to 3 g (full-fed = 5 g) per day from 4 to 12 weeks of age. Although dietary Se deficiency did

Zidovudine-induced diaphragmatic contractile dysfunction: impact of an antioxidant diet.

OBJECTIVE: Zidovudine (AZT) is a primary drug therapy used to treat HIV-infected individuals. While AZT inhibits replication of HIV, it also induces a drug-specific myopathy resulting in altered muscle mitochondria, increased oxidative stress and muscle contractile dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of an antioxidant diet (high in vitamins C and E) on AZT-mediated diaphragmatic contractile dysfunction in rodents. METHODOLOGY: Adult, Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to feeding groups: control (CON, n = 9), AZT-treatment (AZT, n = 8), antioxidant diet only (Anti-Ox

An investigation of fluoride protection against dietary induced osteoporosis in the rat.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the accumulation of substantial levels of fluoride in the skeleton during bone formation would significantly reduce, or prevent, the occurrence of osteoporosis experimentally induced at a later time with a low mineral-containing diet. Male weanling rats were pretreated for 15 weeks with either 0 or 50 ppm F in their drinking water, followed by treatment for four to twelve weeks with diets either optimal or deficient in both Ca and P. Intake of the Ca and P deficient diet resulted in a progressive loss of bone mass (per unit volume of femur), w

Naturally-occurring dietary salicylates in the genesis of functional gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome: Pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: An elimination-rechallenge dietary approach targeting naturally-occurring bioactive chemicals has been proposed to alleviate functional gastrointestinal symptoms. A major focus of this approach is salicylates. This study aimed to address the potential role of dietary salicylates in the induction of symptoms in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). METHODS: A pilot, double-blind, randomized, cross-over trial of 2-week low- versus high-salicylate diets (6.6 and 27.9 g/day salicylate, respectively) was undertaken. All foods were provided containing minimal quantities

Nutrient Composition Comparison between a Modified Paleolithic Diet for Multiple Sclerosis and the Recommended Healthy U.S.-Style Eating Pattern.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease that attacks the central nervous system. Evidence-based dietary guidelines do not exist for MS; the default advice is to follow the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA). A modified Paleolithic Wahls Elimination (WahlsElim) diet promoted for MS excludes grains and dairy and encourages 9+ cups fruits and vegetables (F/V) and saturated fat for cooking. This study evaluated the nutritional adequacy of seven-day menus and modeled them with varying amounts of F/V for comparison with the DGA Healthy US-Style Eating Pattern (HEP) for ages 31⁻50 year

Physical and neuromotor development of progeny of pyridoxine-restricted rats cross-fostered with control or isonutritional dams.

Female rats were fed diets containing graded levels of pyridoxine throughout gestation. At parturition, the pups were cross-fostered with a dam which had been fed the same diet as the biological mother throughout gestation (an isonutritional foster mother), or with one which had received a control diet containing 400% of the National Research Council recommendations for B6 throughout gestation (a control foster mother), or were left to suckle the biological mother. Physical, neuromotor, and reflexological development of the pups was assessed throughout the 3 week lactation period. There were n

[Diabetic osteopathy. 5. Prevention].

The author presents an account on possibilities of prevention of osteoporosis and osteomalacia in diabetics by eliminating or reducing some causes which lead to these complications. In osteoporosis this involves a modified diabetic diet, burdening of the bones by suitable exercise, compensation of diabetes and screening and treatment of complications of diabetes. Prevention of osteomalacia in diabetics includes according to the author adequate exposure to ultraviolet rays which ensures an adequate amount of vitamin D in the skin, dietary measures and administration of vitamin D, treatment of c

[Decreased secretion of epinephrine during protein-supplemented fasting in obese subjects (author's transl)].

The protein-supplemented fasting induces a progressive but moderate decrease in blood glucose (-26%) and a marked rise in plasma free fatty acids levels (+ 43%). Nevertheless the secretion of epinephrine by the adrenal medulla, as indirectly estimated by the ratio of the basal urinary elimination to the recovery percentage from the urine of an epinephrine infusion, shows a significant decrease (- 36%) during the protein diet. Thus the enhanced lipolysis does not result from an adrenergic overactivity but merely depends upon the marked reduction in the plasma insulin level (- 38%).

Metformin alters the duodenal microbiome and decreases the incidence of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma promoted by diet-induced obesity.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC)'s growing incidence has been linked to the rise in obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. In previous work, we have shown that metformin can prevent the increased incidence of PDAC in a KrasG12D mouse model subjected to a diet high in fat and calories (HFCD). One potential way that metformin can affect the host is through alterations in the gut microbiome. Therefore, we investigated microbial associations with PDAC development and metformin use in the same mouse model. Lox-Stop-Lox Kras G12D/+ (LSL-Kras G12D/+); p48-Cre (KC) mice were given control diet,

Exploring gluten sensitivity in chronic spontaneous urticaria.

Background. Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is a common, challenging condition, usually impairs patients' quality of life. While current medications are mainly symptom-based, many people still suffer. There is limited and inconclusive evidence suggesting a possible role of gluten sensitivity in CSU, and current international guidelines do not recommend a gluten-free diet as a standard therapeutic approach. This study aimed to assess the effect of a gluten-free diet (GFD) on CSU activity. Methods. This one-arm sequential interventional study was conducted on 89 CSU patients at Ain Shams Uni

Diagnosis and Management of Food Protein-Induced Allergic Proctocolitis in the pediatric age: A position paper from the Italian Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition and the Italian Society for Pediatric Allergy and Immunology.

BACKGROUND: Food protein-induced allergic proctocolitis (FPIAP) is one of the most common phenotypes of food allergy in the first years of life. Several clinical aspects of FPIAP remain largely undefined, with a negative impact on its management. To bridge these gaps, a dedicated joint working group (WG) from the Italian Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (SIGENP) and the Italian Society for Pediatric Allergy and Immunology (SIAIP) was launched to provide practical evidence-based suggestions for the best diagnostic approach and management of this condition in ped

Usefulness of urinary parameters in advanced chronic kidney disease.

UNLABELLED: This review discusses the diagnostic value of urinary parameters in the setting of advanced chronic kidney disease and we present the key concepts that summarise the suggestions of the manuscript. URINARY VOLUME: The amount of fluid intake may be a non-established risk factor for CKD. For these patients, a urinary output ≥2-3 l/day is a reasonable proposal. This recommendation is not applicable to patients with cardiorenal syndrome or fluid overload risk. NA: This determination is very useful to monitor salt intake. Reducing urinary Na<120 mEq/day (≅salt intake≤5-6g) is a reasonab

A comparison between two different in vitro basophil activation tests for gluten- and cow's milk protein sensitivity in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-like patients.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of food hypersensitivity (FH) in adult patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, beyond the immediate IgE-mediated clinical manifestations, is very often difficult. The aims of our study were to: 1) evaluate the frequency of FH in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-like clinical presentation; and 2) compare the diagnostic accuracy of two different methods of in vitro basophil activation tests. METHODS: Three hundred and five patients (235 females, age range 18-66 years) were included and underwent a diagnostic elimination diet and successive double-blind pla

A randomised controlled trial into the effects of food on ADHD.

The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy of a restricted elimination diet in reducing symptoms in an unselected group of children with Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Dietary studies have already shown evidence of efficacy in selected subgroups. Twenty-seven children (mean age 6.2) who all met the DSM-IV criteria for ADHD, were assigned randomly to either an intervention group (15/27) or a waiting-list control group (12/27). Primary endpoint was the clinical response, i.e. a decrease in the symptom scores by 50% or more, at week 9 based on parent and teacher ratings on

A genomic perspective on nutrient provisioning by bacterial symbionts of insects.

Many animals show intimate interactions with bacterial symbionts that provision hosts with limiting nutrients. The best studied such association is that between aphids and Buchnera aphidicola, which produces essential amino acids that are rare in the phloem sap diet. Genomic studies of Buchnera have provided a new means for inferring metabolic capabilities of the symbionts and their likely contributions to hosts. Despite evolutionary reduction of genome size, involving loss of most ancestral genes, Buchnera retains capabilities for biosynthesis of all essential amino acids. In contrast, most g

Gastrointestinal allergy to food: a review.

Gastrointestinal food allergy still poses a challenge to the clinician because of its variable symptomatology and lack of reliable diagnostic tests. Its prevalence is estimated at 2 approximately 5%, higher in children than in older age-groups. Allergy to food usually diminishes with advancing age. Although a wide variety of foods can cause allergic reactions, cow's milk is the most common cause of food allergy in infants and young children. Depending upon the speed of onset of symptoms, immediate and delayed types of food allergy have been described. Gastrointestinal symptoms in food allergy

Cows' Milk Allergy-Associated Constipation: When to Look for It? A Narrative Review.

Constipation is a very common disorder, mostly functional in nature, that may persist for years in up to 35-52% of children. Food allergy prevalence, severity and persistence are increasing over time, and cows' milk protein is the commonest food allergen recognised to affect gastrointestinal motility in children. There is mounting evidence of the role of cows' milk (CM) allergy (CMA) in children with constipation. With this narrative review, we aim to provide clinicians with an updated and critical overview of food allergy-associated constipation. We searched Embase, Medline and the Cochrane L
