Superior hypophyseal arteries: angiographic re-discovery, comprehensive assessment, and embryologic implications.

UNLABELLED: The superior hypophyseal arteries (SHAs) are well known in anatomical and surgical literature, with a well-established role in supply of the anterior hypophysis and superjacent optic apparatus. However, due to small size and overlap with other vessels, in vivo imaging by any modality has been essentially non-existent. Advances in high resolution cone beam CT angiography (CBCTA) now enables this deficiency to be addressed. This paper presents, to the best of our knowledge, the first comprehensive in vivo imaging evaluation of the SHAs. METHODS: Twenty-five CBCTA studies of common o

Histomorphometric and developmental analysis of human fetal caecum and appendix with its embryological significance.

PURPOSE: The variable positions of the appendix can mislead surgeons and physicians to a wrong diagnosis. When appendicitis happens in subhepatic caecum, it can be misdiagnosed and can lead to severe complications during surgical procedures. Therefore, this study aimed to understand the histomorphometric development of the appendix and caecum and to identify when lymphoid follicles appear in the appendix during fetal life. METHODS: The study was conducted on a total of 50 fetuses. The caecum and appendix were carefully dissected. Their position and various measurements were observed. Afterwar

Arteria lusoria with patent foramen ovale: clinical and embryological significance with literature review.

A 73-year-old female donated cadaver had an unusual origin of the right subclavian artery (RSA), which is usually known as 'Arteria lusoria' (AL) or "Aberrant Right Subclavian Artery" (ARSA). This artery originated as the fourth and most extreme left branch from the arch of the aorta (AOA), distal to the origin of the left subclavian artery (LSA), and traversed obliquely upwards, towards the right side posterior to the oesophagus, heading for the thoracic inlet. The brachiocephalic trunk (BCT) was absent. The right common carotid (RCCA), left common carotid (LCCA), LSA and ARSA were four branc

Optimizing embryological aspects of oocyte retrieval, oocyte denudation, and embryo loading for transfer.

Oocyte retrieval, oocyte denudation, and embryo transfer are crucial processes during assisted reproduction technology (ART). Air quality in the ART laboratory, temperature, pH of the media used and the time interval between oocyte retrieval and insemination are all critical factors. Anesthesia is required for oocyte retrieval, however, evidence regarding the potential impact of different methods (general anesthesia, conscious sedation, and local anesthesia) on the clinical outcomes is unclear. The optimal timing of oocyte denudation following retrieval has not been established. Regarding the

Association of fetal hydrocephalus with other embryological anomalies: A prenatal ultrasound-based study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of fetal hydrocephalus in pregnant women and to identify the association of fetal hydrocephalus with other embryological anomalies. METHODS: This comparative cross-sectional study was conducted on 36 pregnant women at a private ultrasound clinic in Karachi over a period of eight months. The participants were divided into age groups, 21-30 years and 31-40 years. Toshiba APLIO 300 ultrasound machine was used to assess fetal age by measuring biparietal diameter (BPD) and femur length, whereas atrium of lateral ventricle was measured to diagnose fetal hydroce

The Embryological Landscape of Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser Syndrome: Genetics and Environmental Factors.

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome is a disorder caused by Müllerian ducts dysgenesis affecting 1 in 5000 women with a typical 46,XX karyotype. The etiology of MRKH syndrome is complex and largely unexplained. Familial clustering suggests a genetic component and the spectrum of clinical presentations seems consistent with an inheritance pattern characterized by incomplete penetrance and variable expressivity. Mutations of several candidate genes have been proposed as possible causes based on genetic analyses of human patients and animal models. In addition, studies of monozygotic t

Leopold Auerbach's heritage in the field of morphology and embryology with special emphasis on gametogenesis of invertebrates.

Plexus myentericus Auerbachi and Friedreich-Auerbach disease are widely used eponyms that are associated with eminent morphologist Leopold Auerbach (1828-1897), whose life is relatively little known due to limited access to his German-written XIX century biographies and lack of English biographical papers about him in world literature. Hereby we focused on hardly known achievements of Leopold Auerbach in the field of gametogenesis and embryology of invertebrates. Auerbach did not only confirm unicellularity of amoebas, which was previously discovered. He described cleavage of fertilized eggs o…

Unique Case of Congenital Duodenal Atresia and a Choledochal Cyst and the Hypothesis of Their Embryological Evolution.

The concomitant occurrence of duodenal atresia (DA) and a choledochal cyst (CC) has rarely been reported. Knowledge of both the presentation and management of this rare co-occurrence is imperative in avoiding potential complications and sequelae, such as biliary metaplasia. Herein we describe a female infant born at 32 weeks gestational age who was diagnosed with duodenal atresia and annular pancreas postnatally, who had subsequent findings of malrotation and a choledochal cyst, as seen from contrast imaging. Uncomplicated repair of the DA and obstruction was performed at 4 days of life. She r

Abnormal Origin of one Pulmonary Artery from the Ascending Aorta-Embryologic Considerations.

Anomalous origin of one of the pulmonary arteries from the aorta is unusual. The reported morbidity and mortality is mostly due to early onset vascular disease. Early surgical intervention has significantly improved outcomes. The diagnosis of this abnormality is challenging. The nomenclature used is inconsistent. Familiarity with this abnormality and consistent use of definitions and classifications is mandatory. An attempt is made to clarify misleading inconsistencies. An older ontogenetic theory is revisited.

Cysts of the lower male genitourinary tract: embryologic and anatomic considerations and differential diagnosis.

Cysts of the lower male genitourinary tract are uncommon and usually benign. These cysts have different anatomic origins and may be associated with a variety of genitourinary abnormalities and symptoms. Various complications may be associated with these cysts, such as urinary tract infection, pain, postvoiding incontinence, recurrent epididymitis, prostatitis, and hematospermia, and they may cause infertility. Understanding the embryologic development and normal anatomy of the lower male genitourinary tract can be helpful in evaluating these cysts and in tailoring an approach for developing a

A rudimentary tragus in the nasopharynx: case report, literature review, and discussion of embryologic development.

We describe the rare case of a nine year-old girl with a several month history of mouth breathing and nasal obstruction due to a rudimentary tragus in the nasopharynx. We focus on the accessory tragus and its origins by describing the embryologic development of the external ear. Based on our review of the medical literature, this is the first report of a nasopharyngeal mass with a pathologic diagnosis of a rudimentary tragus.

Multicenter study of 19 aortopulmonary window parathyroid tumors: the challenge of embryologic origin.

BACKGROUND: Ectopic abnormal parathyroid glands are relatively common in the superior mediastinum but are rarely situated in the aortopulmonary window (APW). The embryological origin of these abnormal parathyroid glands is controversial. The purpose of this investigation was to investigate the embryological origin and the surgical management of abnormal parathyroid glands situated in the APW. METHODS: The databases of patients operated on for primary, secondary, and tertiary hyperparathyroidism at eight European medical centers with a special interest in endocrine surgery were reviewed to ide

[Fetal membranes: embryological development, structure and the physiopathology of the preterm premature rupture of membranes].

Fetal membranes development is a complex process. The amniotic and exo-celomic cavities are appearing first. The rapid growth of the amniotic cavity is leading to the disappearance of the exo-celomic cavity and the chorion is merging with the decidua. Fetal membranes consist of three layers: the amnion and the chorion, issued from fetal tissues and the decidua issued from maternal tissue. A balance between the synthesis and the degradation of membranes components is physiologic throughout the gestation. Two main mechanisms are involved in the degradation process: apoptosis in the cellular comp

Midline cystic malformations of the brain: imaging diagnosis and classification based on embryologic analysis.

This article describes a classification and imaging diagnosis of intracranial midline cystic malformations based on neuroembryologic analysis. Midline cystic malformations are classified into two categories from an embryologic point of view. In one category, the cyst represents expansion of the roof plate of the brain vesicle, and in the other the cyst consists of extraaxial structures such as an arachnoid membrane or migrating ependymal cells. Infratentorial cysts, such as the Dandy-Walker cyst or Blake's pouch cyst, and supratentorial cysts, such as a communicating interhemispheric cyst with

[Uterus in a male: persistent Mullerian duct syndrome. Report of a case with embryological considerations].

We describe a case of persistent mullerian duct syndrome incidentally found in a 79-year-old man. It was characterized by the presence of a uterus-like retroperitoneal mass composed of an ovoidal corpus and rudimental portio with a central lumen. Histologically the mass was leiomyomatous in nature, closely resembling myometrium, while the central lumen was lined by a monolayer of ciliated cuboidal to columnar epithelium similar to embryo-fetal celomatic epithelium. Although this is a dysembryogenetic syndrome due to the lack of regression of the mullerian duct, it may be incidentally discovere

Spinal dysraphism: a review of neuroradiological features with embryological correlations and proposal for a new classification.

Our purpose was to review the neuroradiological features of spinal dysraphism and to correlate them with clinical findings and up-to-date embryological theory. We also aimed to formulate a working classification which might prove useful in clinical practice. We reviewed series of 986 children referred to our Spina Bifida Centre in the past 24 years. There were 353 children with open spinal (OSD) and 633 with closed (skin-covered) spinal (CSD) dysraphism. By far the most common open abnormality was myelomeningocele, and all patients with OSD had a Chiari II malformation. CSD was categorised cli
