INTRODUCTION: Cleft lip and palate (CLP) represent the most common congenital malformations of the midfacial region. Although these patients show differences in their facial appearance, we hypothesize that CLP-affected individuals do not show an alteration in their emotion regulation abilities compared to unaffected individuals. This is because of the strong biological basis of facial emotion and expression that is inherent and receives little influence from external factors.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The present study evaluated various aspects of emotion regulation in 25 adults with CLP and an e

BACKGROUND: The current study seeks to investigate the mechanisms through which mindfulness is related to mental health in a clinical sample of adults by examining (1) whether specific cognitive emotion regulation strategies (rumination, reappraisal, worry, and nonacceptance) mediate associations between mindfulness and depression and anxiety, respectively, and (2) whether these emotion regulation strategies operate uniquely or transdiagnostically in relation to depression and anxiety.
METHODS: Participants were 187 adults seeking treatment at a mood and anxiety disorders clinic in Connecticu

The term body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) refers to a group of recurrent, problematic, destructive behaviors directed toward the body, including hair-pulling, skin-picking, and nail-biting. Individuals with BFRBs report diminished control over the behavior and a range of physical and psychological sequelae. Recent research on psychological models for BRFBs has investigated the role of emotion regulation (ER), and many authors in this area have conceptualized problematic body-focused behavior as a maladaptive ER mechanism. This article organizes and reviews the empirical research on th

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment is associated with heightened risk for depression; however, not all individuals who experience maltreatment develop depression. Previous research indicates that maltreatment contributes to an attention bias for emotional cues, and that depressed individuals show attention bias for sad cues.
METHOD: The present study examined attention patterns for sad, depression-relevant cues in children with and without experience of maltreatment. We also explored whether individual differences in physiological reactivity and emotion regulation in response to a sad emotional s

Impulsivity, closely related to the construct of response (dis)inhibition, is central to conceptions of both attention-deficit/hyperactivity (ADHD) and aggressive-spectrum or disruptive behavior disorders. The multifaceted nature of inhibitory deficits requires careful specification in any explanatory accounts of psychopathology. A host of brain regions and neural interconnections are involved in response inhibition; neural models are likely to be complex at the levels of neurotransmitter systems and white-matter tracts. Despite the substantial heritability of ADHD and the substantial continui

INTRODUCTION: Digital platforms increasingly govern users through data collection, inference, sharing, retention, and accountability arrangements, but the psychological consequences of perceived data governance transparency remain underexamined. This study tested whether perceived transparency is associated with platform-related psychological wellbeing through trust and context-specific emotional regulation, and whether privacy concern weakens this relationship.
METHODS: Study 1 surveyed 612 adult digital platform users recruited through a professional online panel in mainland China. Confirma…

Although orthorexia nervosa, defined as excessive preoccupation with healthy food consumption, is not yet included as a disease in current classification systems (DSM-5, ICD-10), it is a psychopathology that is attracting increasing attention with a growing number of studies on the subject. The aim of this study was to examine the predictors of eating attitudes, emotion dysregulation, depression, anxiety and self-esteem in orthorexia nervosa, which are considered in the literature to be related to orthorexia nervosa. Data were collected using Eating Attitude Short Form, Difficulties in Emotion

Depression is associated with negative attention and attribution biases and maladaptive emotion responsivity and regulation, which adversely impact self-evaluations and interpersonal relationships. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated the neural substrates of these impairments. We compared neural activity recruited by 126 clinically depressed and healthy adolescents (ages 11-17 years) during social exclusion (Exclusion > Inclusion) using Cyberball. Results revealed significant interaction effects within left anterior insula (AI)/inferior frontal gyrus and left middle te

The ability to resist stress is an important defensive function of a living body. Thus, elucidation of the mechanisms by which the brain resists stress could help to pave the way for new therapeutic strategies for stress-related psychiatric disorders including depression. The present review focuses on the roles of brain 5-HT1A receptor-mediated epigenetic mechanisms in the development of resistance to emotional stress. Behavioral pharmacological studies have demonstrated that treatment with a 5-HT1A receptor agonist 24 h before testing suppressed the decrease in emotional behaviors induced by

Alcoholic patients who have undergone multiple detoxifications/relapses show altered processing of emotional signals. We performed functional magnetic resonance imaging during performance of implicit and explicit versions of a task in which subjects were presented with morphs of fearful facial emotional expressions. Participants were abstaining, multiply detoxified (MDTx; n=12) or singly detoxified patients (SDTx; n=17), and social drinker controls (n=31). Alcoholic patients were less able than controls to recognize fearful expressions, and showed lower activation in prefrontal areas, includin

This article reviews neuroimaging studies of conscious and voluntary regulation of various emotional states (sexual arousal, sadness, negative emotion). The results of these studies show that metacognition and cognitive recontextualization selectively alters the way the brain processes and reacts to emotional stimuli. Neuroimaging studies of the effect of psychotherapy in patients suffering from diverse forms of psychopathology (obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, unipolar major depressive disorder, social phobia, spider phobia, borderline personality) are also examined. The results

BACKGROUND: Takotsubo Syndrome (TTS), or stress-induced cardiomyopathy, is an acute and typically reversible cardiac condition that mimics acute coronary syndrome without obstructive coronary artery disease. Predominantly affecting postmenopausal women, TTS has been increasingly recognized as a psychobiological disorder involving neuroendocrine dysregulation, autonomic imbalance, psychosocial stress, and gendered patterns of emotional regulation. This review aimed to synthesize multidisciplinary evidence to propose an integrative, gender-informed model of TTS.

The free fatty acid receptor 1 (FFAR1) is suggested to function as a G protein-coupled receptor for medium- to long-chain free fatty acids. We have previously shown that FFAR1 signaling pathway plays an important suppressive role in spinal nociceptive processing after peripheral inflammation and nerve injury, and that FFAR1 agonists might serve as a new class of analgesics for treating inflammatory and neuropathic pain. To further pursue the functional significance of central FFAR1 signaling, we investigated the possible involvement of FFAR1 in endogenous pain modulation, depressive-like behav

Late-life depression (LLD) is an affective disorder that is highly prevalent among older people. Cognitive reserve (CR) refers to an active process that facilitates the flexibility and efficiency of the neural networks to compensate for impairments that emerge in consequence of brain pathology. The current functional magnetic resonance imaging study investigated whether and how CR affects emotional regulation, level of depression severity and neural activity associated with affective control during emotional Stroop (eStroop) task. Altogether, 90 older people participated in this study, 50 of w…

BACKGROUND: While symptoms of deficient emotional self-regulation (DESR) have been long associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), there has been limited investigation of this aspect of the clinical picture of the disorder. The main aim of this study was to examine the predictive utility of DESR in moderating the course of ADHD children into adolescence.
METHODS: Subjects comprised 177 children with and 204 children without ADHD followed for an average of 4 years (aged 6-18 years at baseline, 54% male). Subjects were assessed with structured diagnostic interviews and mea
