The application of positron emission tomography to the study of normal and pathologic emotions.

This report reviews six studies in which positron emission tomography (PET) was used to investigate the neuroanatomic correlates of emotion, anxiety, and anxiety disorders. PET was used to study brain regions that participate in film- and recall-generated discrete emotions (happiness, sadness, and disgust), picture-generated positive and negative emotions, and normal anticipatory anxiety; participate in the predisposition to, elicitation of, and treatment of panic attacks; participate in social phobic anxiety; and participate in specific phobic anxiety. Results of these investigations suggest …

The experiences of ataques de nervios: towards an anthropology of emotions in Puerto Rico.

Ataques de nervios are an idiom of distress used by Puerto Ricans and other Latinos to express dislocations in the social world of the family. This paper contributes to the growing study of the "anthropology of the emotions". Through detailed interviews with 121 people in Puerto Rico, 78 of whom had had an ataque de nervios, we are developing a thick description of both the prototypical models for ataques de nervios and the varied individual experiences of ataques. The interview used in this study is a version of the Explanatory Model Interview Catalogue specifically adapted for use in a commu…

Emotions and skin (II)-the conditioning of scratch responses in cases of lichen simplex.

Lichen simplex is generally regarded as a condition initiated and perpetuated by scratching and emotional tension. It was felt that the scratching might partly be a conditional response to itching and other signals, and that feelings of guilt, anxiety and hostility would be prominent features in these patients. Conditioning experiments designed to establish scratch responses to an itch stimulus (UCS) and a tone (CS) showed that lichen simplex patients conditioned more readily and extinguished more slowly than controls. These finding were more marked when the itch stimulus was applied to affect

Support for art interventions in children's hospitals and design strategies for alleviating negative emotions.

ISSUE: Children experience heightened negative emotions during healthcare visits. Art represents an effective non-pharmacological intervention, but its potential remains underutilized in Chinese children's hospitals. OBJECTIVE: To alleviate children's negative emotions, enhance the artistic quality of hospital spaces, and support the development of humanized, child-friendly medical environments. METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was employed to investigate the spatial environments of two children's hospitals in Shanghai, China. Pediatric patients aged 3-14 years and their parents were studie…

Sexual interactions and their effect on positive and negative emotions in social anxiety disorder.

Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is associated with significant interpersonal difficulties, yet little is known about how individuals with SAD … . However, for individuals without SAD, sexual interactions were followed by higher levels positive emotions, whereas for individuals with SAD, no such emotional benefit was observed (and this remained when examining social anxiety as a continuum of severity). Finally, we found differences in the experience of negative emotions following sex between indivi …

Network analyses of discrete emotions and social connectedness indicators in anxiety and depressive disorders.

Low positive affect (PA) and high negative affect (NA) are common features of depressive and anxiety disorders that have been linked to social disconnection. Prior research, however, has examined PA, NA, and social connectedness as global dimensions rather than as systems of interacting discrete emotions and connectedness indicators. This study used network analysis to: (a) examine interrelationships among discrete emotions to identify potentially influential emotions within and across positive and negative emotion communities, and (b) determine which emotions are most strongly linked to indic…

A latent profile analysis of Germans' threat perceptions, intergroup emotions and attitudes toward refugees.

BACKGROUND: Members of receiving societies respond differently to arriving refugees. Person-centered factors can affect the level of perceived threat by refugees, the intensity of intergroup emotions, and attitudes toward refugees. However, it is largely unknown whether members of receiving societies display distinct profiles reflecting the co-occurrence of cognitive-affective-attitudinal responses and person-centered antecedents toward refugees. METHODS: The current study used latent profile analysis to examine distinct response profiles of Germans without migration background (N = 910). Par…

How emotions sculpt bodily expression: a systematic review of emotional induction, measures, and findings.

Emotional expressions conveyed through body postures and movements play a central role in social communication and adaptive behaviour, yet they have received considerably less attention than facial expressions. This systematic review examines how emotional bodily expressions are induced, measured, and analyzed. Forty-nine studies on healthy adults were included, covering (1) measurement technologies and body-related outcomes, (2) sample characteristics, (3) methods used to elicit, portray, and assess emotions, (4) single- versus multi- channel approaches, (5) the main findings, and (6) methodo…

Relationship between 21 Medications and Negative Emotions: A Mendelian Randomization Analysis in Asian Populations.

OBJECTIVE: Negative emotional states, such as nervousness, anxiety, depression, and tension, exert profound detrimental effects on an individual's quality of life and overall health. Although certain widely prescribed medications have been observed to modulate these emotional states, the existing body of research in this domain remains insufficient. To address this gap, Mendelian randomization (MR) methodologies, leveraging large-scale datasets, were employed to investigate the causal relationships between 21 commonly utilized medications and the manifestation of negative emotions. METHODS: T…

The Combined Effects of Prefrontal tDCS and Slow-Paced Breathing on Stress and Emotions.

Difficulties in stress and emotion regulation can undermine well-being. Yet, they could be tackled by intervention acting on the nervous system. Two promising interventions could achieve this via complementary pathways: slow-paced breathing (SPB), acting via peripheral mechanisms, and prefrontal transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS), targeting brain regions involved in autonomic regulation. Combining those techniques could therefore enhance their effects. This placebo-controlled study examined the effects of SPB and tDCS, alone and in combination, on stress and emotions. Participants …

Understanding the evolution of epistemic emotions research: a bibliometric review from 2005 to 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Epistemic emotions play a central role in fostering cognitive engagement and knowledge construction. Although research on epistemic emotions has expanded considerably over the past two decades, a comprehensive synthesis of the field's intellectual structure, thematic development, and emerging researchdirections has been lacking. METHODS: This study addresses this gap through a bibliometric analysis of 185 publications indexed in Scopus and Web of Science between 2005 and 2024 using Biblioshiny in R. The analysis examined publication trends, influential authors, journals, institu…

Facial recognition in late-life insomnia: Preserved positivity bias and associations with negative emotions.

BACKGROUND: Facial emotion recognition (FER) is essential for social functioning. Although aging is typically associated with reduced FER performance, recognition of positive emotions (e.g., happiness) often remains intact-an effect attributed to an age-related positivity bias. However, insomnia, which is highly prevalent in older adults, may disrupt emotional processing and compromise this typically well-preserved component of FER. Yet, few studies have examined the relationship between insomnia and FER specifically in late life. METHODS: Fifty-four older adults with insomnia and fifty healt…

Negative non-deployment emotions, substance use, and marital satisfaction among never-deployed military couples.

Among military service members, the experience of never-deploying can create a negative affective state (i.e., "non-deployment emotions"; (NDE)) that increases stress and may contribute to higher rates of substance use among Reserve and National Guard soldiers. Little is known about how soldiers' negative NDE and substance use may affect the marital relationship of military couples. We examined the cross-spouse effects of male soldiers' negative NDE and alcohol and illicit drug use on female spouses' marital satisfaction, using cross-sectional data from never-deployed male soldiers and their f…

Emotions in patients with refractory or unexplained chronic cough: a multicenter, non-interventional study.

BACKGROUND: Chronic cough (CC) has a negative effect on patients' quality of life and everyday activities. Emotional reactions are an important aspect of how patients deal with illness, and CC can lead to feelings of uncertainty, loss of control, helplessness, self-consciousness, embarrassment, worry, fear, frustration, irritability, and anger. OBJECTIVES: To assess the emotions related to bouts of cough in patients with refractory or unexplained chronic cough (RCC/UCC), using a validated questionnaire. DESIGN: This was a multicenter, non-interventional study. METHODS: Patients with RCC/UCC…

The causal relationship between negative emotions and inflammatory dermatoses: a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

PURPOSE: Observational studies have suggested a potential link between emotions and inflammatory dermatoses. However, research on the causal relationship between different types of emotions and inflammatory dermatoses is lacking. This study is aimed to investigate the causal relationship between negative emotions and inflammatory dermatoses through Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. METHODS: Summary data of seven negative emotions were obtained from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) conducted by the MRC-IEU consortium. Seven inflammatory dermatoses including vitiligo, psoriasis, syst…

Emotions observed during sessions of dialectical behavior therapy predict outcome for borderline personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: We examined whether the emotions that clients experience within session are associated with treatment outcome in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for borderline personality disorder (BPD). METHOD: Participants were 52 adults who met criteria for BPD and were enrolled in a 12-month DBT treatment. The Classification of Affective-Meaning States, an observer-rated measure of discrete emotions, was used to code videos of individual DBT sessions. Raters coded three psychotherapy sessions for each participant: one session from each of the early, working, and late phases of psychotherapy…

Perception and recognition of primary and secondary emotions by children with neurofibromatosis type 1.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disease that can lead to impaired social adaptation and functioning, thus affecting quality of life. To date, studies of these children's social cognition abilities have been scant and far from exhaustive. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to assess the ability of children with NF1, compared with controls, to process facial expressions of emotions - not only including the usual primary emotions (happiness, anger, surprise, fear, sadness and disgust), but secondary emotions, too. To do so, the links between this ability and the character…

Intimate Partner Violence and Alexithymia: Do Emotions Matter? A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) encompasses physical, sexual, or psychological abuse. Recent evidence suggests that victims and perpetrators might share some common psychological characteristics. Particularly, high levels of alexithymia, a difficulty in identifying and expressing emotions, and an externally oriented thinking style were found in both victims and perpetrators when compared to the general population. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to quantify the levels of alexithymia in victims and perpetrators of IPV and compare these levels to controls. We systematically search…
