The solution space: developing research and policy agendas to eliminate employment-related health inequalities.

As in many other areas of social determinants of health, policy recommendations on employment conditions and health inequalities need to be implemented and evaluated. Case studies at the country level can provide a flavor of "what works," but they remain essentially subjective. Employment conditions research should provide policies that actually reduce health inequalities among workers. Workplace trials showing some desired effect on the intervention group are insufficient for such a broad policy research area. To provide a positive heuristic, the authors propose a set of new policy research p…

Mental health and hostility as predictors of temporary employment: evidence from two prospective studies.

We used two studies to examine whether mental health and hostility predicted temporary employment. Study 1 involved a cohort of 970 Finnish hospital employees (102 men, 868 women) who had temporary job contracts at baseline. After adjustment for demographics, organisational tenure and part-time work status, doctor-diagnosed psychiatric disorder predicted continuing in temporary employment instead of receiving a permanent job by the end of the 2-year follow-up. A higher level of hostility was also associated with temporary employment, but only among employees in low socioeconomic positions. In …

What helps people with bipolar affective disorder succeed in employment: a grounded theory approach.

The present study used a qualitative research design to unfold those contextual factors which influence vocational outcomes amongst people with bipolar disorder (BD). The data for this qualitative study was collated using a grounded theory approach because of its particular relevance to the study's aims i.e., to propose a theory grounded in the data that provided an account of the vocational integration process people with BD go through. The emerging theory consists of two over-arching principles that determine an individual's readiness to join the workforce: i) recovery from an acute phase of

Building a Healthier Workforce:: The Value of Employer-Sponsored Vaccinations and Vaccination Programs in the Workplace.

Vaccination reduces the burden of infection, severe illness, and mortality associated with many vaccine-preventable diseases. Workplace vaccination programs are a highly effective strategy for promoting employee health, reducing absenteeism, and improving productivity while yielding significant cost savings to employers. Offering on-site vaccination clinics can further improve vaccine uptake and increase cost efficiency by making immunization more convenient and accessible. Workplace vaccination programs reflect an ethical commitment to public health by fostering a safer environment for employ

Alcohol in the Workplace: A Qualitative Study of Employees' Experiences With Employer-Supported Alcohol Treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol use disorder is a major public health issue, impacting health, well-being, relationships and work performance. In Sweden, employers are legally required to provide access to and cover the cost of alcohol treatment for individuals with alcohol use disorder. Employer-supported alcohol treatment is therefore rather common in Sweden; however, research on employees' experiences with this type of treatment remains unexplored. This qualitative study investigates how a group of Swedish employees who had received employer-supported alcohol treatment experienced workplace managemen

Variation in employment inequality between workers with vocational and general education over the career.

Vocational education is often credited with easing school-to-work transitions but may come with late-career disadvantages due to faster skil … ntly at the tertiary level; at the secondary level, vocational graduates often have equal or better employment prospects than general graduates over the career. This suggests that benefits associated with general education are likely confined to those with higher-level qualifications. Comparing employment trajectories across countries reveals a mixed picture …

Additional dimensions, including meaning of work, career adaptability, work-life balance, and support networks, also achieved the predefined consensus criteria in the final Delphi round. Employment trajectories of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities: A 7-year longitudinal study.

This study aimed to identify the subtypes of the longitudinal changes in employment profile of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and to examine their determinants. A total of 339 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities from the national panel survey collected from 2016 to 2021 were included for a latent class analysis. The results yielded four latent classes: stable unemployment (64.6%); increasing employment (3.5%); stable employment (23.6%); decreasing employment (8.3%). Using the stable unemployment class as the reference group, several correl…

Perceived Clinical Barriers to Employment for Males with Spinal Cord Injury in Saudi Arabia.

Return to work is a challenging aspect of community integration for individuals with disabilities. The reintegration of individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) is multifactorial; hence, regional challenges need to be investigated in the context of their clinical attributes and perceptions. A total of 121 male participants above 18 years of age with diagnosis of SCI and living at home were included in this cross-sectional survey. The study was conducted at a tertiary care rehabilitation facility in Saudi Arabia. The most common reported clinical barriers to employment were mobility, bladder i…

The rate of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination uptake by US nursing home staff remains low despite the increased risks of viral transmission and related morbidity and mortality in this setting. This study describes vaccine uptake activities including a COVID-19 vaccination condition of employment (COE) policy in one community nursing home. This case study summarizes the timeline of vaccination uptake activities, staff vaccination rates over time, and stakeholder perspectives around the implementation of a COVID-19 vaccination COE. Organizational data were used to calculate vaccina…

Improving work and employment opportunities for women with psychosocial disabilities: an action research protocol.

In Kenya, employment rates for persons with disabilities are very low and those with psychosocial disabilities have even more dismal rates of employment. This situation has negative impact on the individual's recovery, quality of life, mental and physical health. The systemic exclusion of persons with psychosocial disabilities in work and employment disproportionately affects women. The aim of this study is to test the feasibility of disability inclusion training to improve work and employment opportunities for women with psychosocial disabilities in Tana River County, Kenya. The study will ad…
