Aldosterone is the major mineralocorticoid hormone produced by the zona glomerulosa of the adrenal cortex. Aldosterone secretion is mainly regulated by the renin-angiotensin system, and to a minor extent by serum concentration of potassium, sodium, adrenocorticotropic hormone. and dopamine. This hormone, as well as other adrenal corticosteroids, exert many of its physiological actions through modulation of gene expression. It binds cytosolic receptors that translocate to the nucleus in a ligand-dependent manner and induces transcription of specific genes that encode for proteins involved in th

A plethora of hormones regulate many of the body's functions, including growth and development, metabolism, electrolyte balances, and reproduction. Numerous glands throughout the body produce hormones. The hypothalamus produces several releasing and inhibiting hormones that act on the pituitary gland, stimulating the release of pituitary hormones. Of the pituitary hormones, several act on other glands located in various regions of the body, whereas other pituitary hormones directly affect their target organs. Other hormone-producing glands throughout the body include the adrenal glands, which

As is obvious from the previous discussions, obesity is associated with a wide variety of changes in endocrine parameters (Table 1). Some of these changes, such as the reduction in SHBG without change in serum free testosterone levels, reflect merely laboratory abnormalities that may influence interpretation of diagnostic tests but have no important physiologic relevance. Other abnormalities have major clinical impact, such as hyperestrogenemia-endometrial carcinoma and hyperlipidemia-coronary artery disease. In some cases, endocrine changes in obesity are beneficial--that is, hyperestrogenemi

We have purified a 16,000 dalton protein that stimulates growth of human umbilical cord vein-derived endothelial cells (HUV-EC) from mouse submaxillary glands by using heparin-Sepharose affinity and C4 reverse phase chromatography. The purified molecule was identified as an FGF-1 on the basis of its biological activities, its affinity for heparin and its N-terminal amino-acid sequence. The concentrations of FGF-1 in the submaxillary gland of male or testosterone-treated female mice were about 12 times those of untreated females or castrated males. The 2.3 and 4.1 kb FGF-1 mRNAs were expressed

Since its introduction as a genetic vertebrate model system approximately 30 years ago, the focus of zebrafish research has increasingly shifted to questions that are also relevant for human development and disease. Here, we review the potential of the zebrafish as a model for human endocrine systems. A recent review compared the functions of the different endocrine systems and glands in zebrafish with those in other vertebrates, including humans, coming to the conclusion that major aspects are conserved. Here, we present an updated overview of this rapidly growing field of zebrafish research,

The endocrine function of the thymus and its relations to other endocrine glands have been discussed in the scientific literature. Blood glucose contents (assayed on a 'Beckman' glucoanalyzer by the glucoseoxidase method) and serum insulin level (using radioimmunoassay) were studied in male Wistar rats--1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, and 12 months after adult thymectomy. The results obtained demonstrated that the thymectomy provoked increase of insulin level accompanied by phasic decrease of blood glucose in comparison to age matched controls. Correlation between insulin and glucose levels in the thymec…

Submandibular glands release peptides and proteins that, through exocrine and endocrine actions, facilitate tissue repair in the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and more distal sites such as liver. It has been shown that salivary gland factors also modulate inflammatory responses, because we found that removal of the submandibular glands increases the hypotensive responses to endotoxin. From this observation we proposed that these glands contain a factor that regulates cardiovascular response to shock. With the use of classical peptide isolation procedures, a heptapeptide (TDIFEGG) called

BACKGROUND: Clinical manifestations and treatment outcomes in children and adolescents with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 are not well characterized.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 80 patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 who commenced tumor surveillance at ≤18 years of age.
RESULTS: Fifty-six patients (70%) developed an endocrine tumor by age ≤18 years (median age = 14 years, range = 6-18 years). Primary hyperparathyroidism occurred in >80% of patients, with >70% undergoing parathyroidectomy, in which less-than-subtotal (<3-gland) resection resulted

The adrenal glands are central regulators of endocrine function and stress physiology, yet detailed species-specific anatomical baselines remain limited in cetaceans. This study provides a comprehensive gross, histological, morphometric, and ultrastructural characterization of the adrenal glands in 55 short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) examined postmortem in the Canary Islands. Adrenal glands were evaluated macroscopically and microscopically, and histological corticomedullary ratios were calculated from mid-transverse sections. Associations with body length, sexual maturity, and

BACKGROUND Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN 2A) is a rare autosomal-dominant genetic syndrome characterized by mutations in the RET gene and tumors of endocrine glands, including pheochromocytomas. Pheochromocytoma is a benign primary endocrine tumor of the adrenal glands that produces catecholamines and in rare cases is complicated by pheochromocytoma multisystem crisis (PMC), a life-threatening endocrine emergency caused by severe catecholamine overproduction. This report describes a 42-year-old woman presenting with PMC associated with bilateral pheochromocytomas and MEN2A. CASE RE…

Humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy may reflect the synthesis and secretion of biologically active parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) by a given tumor. In the present study we investigated 25 human non-endocrine carcinomas which were clinically associated with hypercalcemia (Ca > 11 mg%). By applying PTHrP-specific immunocytochemistry, PTHrP could be detected in all tumors. The intra-tumorous distribution was heterogeneous with strong positivity in relatively few cells or weak positivity in the majority of cells. Surprisingly, in the PTHrP producing cells none of the marker proteins t

Over the years, the vaste expansion of plastic manufacturing has dramatically increased the environmental impact of microplastics [MPs] and … receptors; hence they interfere with normal hormone receptors, altering the hormonal action of the endocrine glands. This review demonstrates size-dependent MPs' bioaccumulation, distribution, and translocation with potential hazards to the endocrine gland. We reviewed that MPs and NPs disrupt hypothalamic-pituitary axes, including the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyr …

Children with nephropathic cystinosis exhibit marked growth retardation. Improved medical management and renal transplantation have increased their life expectancy beyond the second decade. We have studied endocrine function in seven patients with cystinosis and reviewed autopsy findings of four patients and medical records of 24 others. One 10-year-old boy was overtly hypothyroid. The six other patients had normal studies of peripheral thyroid function but two had borderline and two had frankly elevated serum TSH levels. Stimulation tests of cortisol and growth hormone secretion and basal lev

Nineteen patients were surgically treated for hyperparathyroidism associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 syndrome. Fourteen patients (74%) had removal of three or more parathyroid glands at the first operation, and five (26%) by removal of 2 1/2 or fewer glands. Two patients had recurrent hypercalcemia during the mean follow-up period of 65 months. One had a recurrence 10 years after subtotal parathyroidectomy. Reexploration in this patient revealed enlargement of the remaining tissue in the neck and an enlarged supernumerary gland in the aorticopulmonary window. The other patient

Six cases of type A gastritis associated with multiple carcinoids and/or endocrine cell micronests (ECM) in the atrophic fundic mucosa were examined light microscopically, immunohistochemically, and ultrastructurally. The ECM and carcinoids were mainly composed of enterochromaffin-like (ECL) cells. The cells were hyperplastic only in the atrophic fundic glands and pseudopyloric glands, but not in the intestinal metaplastic gland. It is suggested that the development of both the ECM and the carcinoids is highly related to the atrophic change of the fundic mucosa and a trophic action of subseque

A case of anterior mediastinal mature teratoma containing air because of penetrating to the lung was reported. The patient was a 28-year-old woman. The chest X-ray film on admission showed a homogeneous mass in the anterior mediastinum. This shadow changed to cystic one after ten days later. The tumor was removed together with adhering part of the left lung and pericardium through median sternotomy. Histologically, the wall of cysts contained sebaseous glands, bronchial glands and pancreatic tissue containing both exocrine and endocrine elements.
