The purpose of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of chlorine dioxide gas for environmental decontamination of Syphacia spp. ova. We collected Syphacia ova by perianal cellophane tape impression of pinworm-infected mice. Tapes with attached ova were exposed to chlorine dioxide gas for 1, 2, 3, or 4 h. After gas exposure, ova were incubated in hatching medium for 6 h to promote hatching. For controls, tapes with attached ova were maintained at room temperature for 1, 2, 3, and 4 h without exposure to chlorine dioxide gas and similarly incubated in hatch medium for 6 h. Ova viability after i

Specific aetiological factors are responsible for a significant proportion of cases of perianal sepsis in children. A rarely implicated pathogen is Enterobius vermicularis, an obligate parasite with a ubiquitous presence in children. The authors describe two unequivocal instances of threadworm involvement in perianal sepsis, suggesting a pathophysiological basis.

In order to study the factors related to Enterobius vermicularis infection among pre-school children in Ta-Liao District of Kaohsiung County, a questionnaire was designed to interview parents of preschool children selected by random sampling from 7 kindergartens in Ta-Liao District. Enterobius infections in the children were then examined by using two-consecutive-day adhesive cellophane paper perianal swabs. The effective sample numbered 555 children. Variables causing the infection among infected and non-infected children were analyzed by chi-square test and point-biserial correlation. The re

Enterobius vermicularis is a common intestinal parasite affecting a large proportion of the global population. It typically inhabits the terminal ileum and cecum without causing significant damage to the intestinal mucosa. However, several studies and case reports have documented instances of mucosal invasion. The pathogenesis of such invasion remains a matter of debate. It is not yet clear whether pre-existing mucosal injury is a prerequisite for invasion or whether mucosal damage can occur primarily as a direct consequence of E. vermicularis infection. Here, we present a case of terminal ile

OBJECTIVE: Dientamoeba fragilis (D. fragilis) is a flagellated protozoan with an amoeba-like morphology, located in the gastrointestinal tract. The hypothesis was that the parasite was transported by Enterobius vermicularis (E. vermicularis) eggs. This study aimed to determine the association of D. fragilis and E. vermicularis with the genotypes of the identified strain of D. fragilis. Results of trichrome staining were compared with those of polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which is widely used in the diagnosis of D. fragilis.
METHODS: A total of 391 samples were obtained. The stool and cell

A series of 849 male pinworms collected from a 64-yr-old Japanese male was examined. They were classified by the spicule morphology into 87 Enterobius vermicularis (Linnaeus, 1758), 754 Enterobius gregorii Hugot, 1983, and 6 immature adults, whereas 2 worms lacked spicules. The worm length of E. vermicularis was significantly larger than E. gregorii. The shape and length of the distal tubular portion of the spicule were identical in these forms, whereas the basal portion was different. The immature adults just after the final molt or still within the cuticle of the fourth stage had only a dist

Enterobius vermicularis is one of the most common helminthic infections in humans. It normally inhabits the large intestine and is of low pathogenecity. The ova are, however, occasionally found in ectopic sites in the peritoneal cavity, usually as asymptomatic granulomas, though in rare cases they may cause chronic lower abdominal pain. Two cases of ectopic enterobius vermicularis are presented in this paper.

We present the case of a 33-year-old patient who had undergone hysterectomy due to an in situ carcinoma of the uterine cervix; exploratory laparotomy was carried out for a suspected abscessed pelvic tumor. It was confirmed that the two Fallopian tubes and ovaries were abscessed and exeresis was carried out. The anatomicopathological study of these showed granulomas containing gravid female specimens of the Enterobius vermicularis species.
