Environmental triggers for inflammatory bowel disease.

Inflammatory bowel diseases [IBD; Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis (UC)] are chronic immunologically mediated diseases that are due to a dysregulated immune response to intestinal flora in a genetically susceptible host. Despite advances in genetics, the likelihood of occurrence of disease remains incompletely explained and there appears to be a strong role for the environment in mediating risk of disease. Smoking remains the most widely studied and replicated risk factor, contributing to increased risk and severity of CD while conferring protection against UC. Recent data has suggeste

[Environmental air pollutants and the risk of cancer].

The increased combustion of fossil fuels is one of the main reasons for the hazardous changes in the atmospheric composition. The sources of air pollution in urban areas include diesel motor vehicles, residential wood burning, and certain industrial processes. The types of air pollution include gases(eg, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone)and suspended particulate matter(PM)such as PM2.5 and PM10 in diesel exhaust particles. PM2.5 refers to particles less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter. Long-term exposure to PM2.5 can increase the cardiovascular disease risk and lung can

[Environmental toxic and its effect on neurodevelopment].

Neurodevelopmental disorders are the result of a disturbance of brain function. They are frequent, with varied symptomatology, manifest themselves at different times of life and tend to be persistent with impact at the individual, family and social level. The association of these disorders with genetic entities is low. Although the research supports a mode of genetic inheritance, epigenetic factors and environmental factors can play an important role. In recent years there was a striking increase of these disorders especially attention deficit hyperactivity disorders and pervasive development

Environmental risk factors in systemic sclerosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Environmental risk factors have been implicated in the pathogenesis of systemic sclerosis (SSc). Recent evidence further supports this relationship and constitutes the focus of this review article. RECENT FINDINGS: Exposure to silica through various occupations remains one of the main environmental risk factors for SSc. Emerging evidence has also implicated organic solvents in the development of this difficult-to-manage condition. The individual role of these toxins is, however, difficult to ascertain due to methodological limitations in study design. Other occupational age

Etiology of depression: genetic and environmental factors.

In summary, depressed patients with a history of childhood trauma may have a distinct depression endophenotype characterized by a specific neurobiology and risk genotype that may be responsive to different treatment strategies than depressed patients without childhood adversity. Based on current findings, treatment strategies should be multimodal and include the following: 1. Psychotherapy that addresses a number of domains, such as emotional regulation, cognitive reframing, careful exploration of past traumatic events, attachment, and interpersonal relationships in a safe and trusting therape

Environmental tobacco smoke and children's health.

Passive exposure to tobacco smoke significantly contributes to morbidity and mortality in children. Children, in particular, seem to be the most susceptible population to the harmful effects of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). Paternal smoking inside the home leads to significant maternal and fetal exposure to ETS and may subsequently affect fetal health. ETS has been associated with adverse effects on pediatric health, including preterm birth, intrauterine growth retardation, perinatal mortality, respiratory illness, neurobehavioral problems, and decreased performance in school. A valid est

Environmental monitoring of secondhand smoke exposure.

The complex composition of secondhand smoke (SHS) provides a range of constituents that can be measured in environmental samples (air, dust and on surfaces) and therefore used to assess non-smokers' exposure to tobacco smoke. Monitoring SHS exposure (SHSe) in indoor environments provides useful information on the extent and consequences of SHSe, implementing and evaluating tobacco control programmes and behavioural interventions, and estimating overall burden of disease caused by SHSe. The most widely used markers have been vapour-phase nicotine and respirable particulate matter (PM). Numerous

[Environmental risk factors for schizophrenia: a review].

BACKGROUND: Evidence of variations in schizophrenia incidence rates has been found in genetically homogenous populations, depending on changes within time or space of certain environmental characteristics. The consideration of the impact of environmental risk factors in etiopathogenic studies has put the environment in the forefront of research regarding psychotic illnesses. Various environmental factors such as urbanicity, migration, cannabis, childhood traumas, infectious agents, obstetrical complications and psychosocial factors have been associated with the risk of developing schizophrenia

MicroRNA response to environmental mutagens in liver.

During the recent few years, microRNAs emerged as key molecules in the regulation of mammalian cell functions. It was also shown that their altered expression can promote pathologic conditions, such as cancer and other common diseases. Because environmental exposure to biological, chemical or physical agents may be responsible for human diseases, including cancer, uncovering relationships between exposure to environmental carcinogens and expression of microRNAs may help to disclose early mechanisms of disease and it may potentially lead to the development of useful indicators of toxic exposure

Characteristics of environmental Paracoccidioides brasiliensis isolates.

The ecological niche or exact habitat of the fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis is not known, and few isolates have been obtained from the environment. In this study, ten isolates were analyzed with respect to antigenic composition, serology, pathogenicity, and molecular aspects. Gp43 is considered to be the molecular basis for the serodiagnosis of paracoccidioidomycosis; however, in this study only six of the environmental isolates secreted this molecule (four in great amounts and two in small amounts). Other molecules were also produced. When exoantigens from these isolates were tested usi

Assessment of environmental and socio-economic stress.

Since long, socio-economic status, often expressed as an index, is known to correlate with health outcomes like behavioural problems. We constructed a new index that encapsulated not only economic and social but also environmental stressors (ESES), using data of the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents, a nation-wide representative surveillance of 17,641 participants aged between 0-17 years. Different factors were selected to account for socio-economic stress (low parental education, low household income, low occupational status of the householder), domes

Effect of vaccination in environmentally induced diseases.

Along with the constant improvement in hygiene in the last few decades there has been a continuous increase in the incidence of particular diseases, mainly of autoimmune or allergic etiology, but also of diseases caused by infectious agents, such as listeriosis. We here present a model for the effect of exposure to agents causing or inducing the disease on the incidence of morbidity. The proposed model is an expansion of the SIR model to non-contagious diseases and aims to estimate the balance between immunization and disease probability. The model results indicate that, paradoxically in a wid

Cryptosporidiosis: environmental, therapeutic, and preventive challenges.

Cryptosporidium spp. are responsible for endemic and epidemic disease worldwide. Clinical manifestations may include acute, persistent, or chronic diarrhea, biliary, and pulmonary disease. Disease severity ranges from asymptomatic or mild to severe, intractable diarrhea with wasting depending on immune status, nutrition, and age. Transmission is fecal-oral with both human and animal reservoirs. Disease is often self limited in healthy individuals, but therapy remains a challenge in the immune-compromised. Prevention currently depends on appropriate hygiene and proper water management and treat

Etiology of musician's dystonia: familial or environmental?

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that there is familial aggregation of dystonia and other movement disorders in relatives of patients with musician's dystonia (MD) and to identify possible environmental triggers. METHODS: The families of 28 index patients with MD (14 with a reported positive family history of focal task-specific dystonia [FTSD] and 14 with no known family history [FH-]) underwent a standardized telephone screening interview using a modified version of the Beth Israel Dystonia Screen. Videotaped neurologic examinations were performed on all participants who screened positive

Actinic keratosis: an occupational and environmental disorder.

Solar ultraviolet light electromagnetic waves are a known environmental carcinogenic agent closely associated with the development of skin cancer in light-complexioned individuals. Outdoor workers have higher annual exposure to ultraviolet light. We will review the topic of actinic keratoses among these individuals as this common rudimentary form of superficial cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma is explored in greater detail.

[Environmental pollutants in maternal milk and cryptorchidism].

OBJECTIVE: Numerous maternal lipophilic compounds are eliminated into milk during lactation, their concentrations reflecting fetal in utero exposure. Some of them are endocrine disruptors. Their role in the occurrence of genital malformation, dysfunction or cancer has been suggested. We wanted to study the exposure of our population and its potential association with cryptorchidism, as few clinical studies are available. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Over three years, we screened for cryptorchidism all boys born alive at or above 34 weeks of gestational age, in two maternity wards (CHU Nice, CHG Gras

Environmental epigenomics in human health and disease.

The epigenome consists of the DNA methylation marks and histone modifications involved in controlling gene expression. It is accurately reproduced during mitosis and can be inherited transgenerationally. The innate plasticity of the epigenome also enables it to be reprogrammed by nutritional, chemical, and physical factors. Imprinted genes and metastable epialleles represent two classes of genes that are particularly susceptible to environmental factors because their regulation is tightly linked to epigenetic mechanisms. To fully understand the etiology of the most devastating diseases that pl

Environmental risk factors for mycosis fungoides.

The rising incidence rates of mycosis fungoides (MF) call for an explanation. Thus, environmental and lifestyle factors were speculated to play a role in the development of lymphoproliferative diseases. It is thought that continuous activation of skin T helper lymphocytes leads to malignant transformation of a specific clone. Possible risk factors that have been implicated are occupational chemical exposure, radiation, drugs and infections. The carcinogenic process is probably multifactorial and multistep, combining the genetic predisposition of the individual and his immune status with variou

Environmental factors in primary biliary cirrhosis.

Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a chronic cholestatic liver disease more commonly found in women (with most cases being diagnosed in the fourth to fifth decades of life) that share peculiar features. Among these, serum antimitochondrial autoantibodies (AMA), serum hyper-immunoglobulin M, and progressive destruction of intrahepatic bile ducts are the most common clinical findings. The pathogenesis of the selective destruction of small-duct biliary epithelial cells is still unknown, although an autoimmune mechanism appears likely due to the detection of autoreactive T and B cells. Genetic bac
