The History of Epidemic Typhus.

Epidemic typhus caused by Rickettsia prowazekii is one of the oldest pestilential diseases of humankind. The disease is transmitted to human beings by the body louse Pediculus humanus corporis and is still considered a major threat by public health authorities, despite the efficacy of antibiotics, because poor sanitary conditions are conducive to louse proliferation. Epidemic typhus has accompanied disasters that impact humanity and has arguably determined the outcome of more wars than have soldiers and generals. The detection, identification, and characterization of microorganisms in ancient

[Epidemic of rubella encephalitis].

Rubella is a mild viral illness in children. Rubella encephalitis is an extremely uncommon complication of rubella affecting unvaccinated children, aged between 5 and 14 years. From May to June 2011, we observed 9 cases of rubella encephalitis diagnosed during an epidemic of rubella. All were previously healthy (8 boys and 1 girl). None of them had received rubella vaccine. The mean age was 11.6 years. The onset of neurological symptoms occurred within 1-5 days after the typical rush and was associated with seizures and altered consciousness in all cases. The presence of serum immunoglobulin M

NeuroAIDS: an evolving epidemic.

Over 60,000 Canadians are infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Greater than 50% of these individuals will develop a neurological disorder despite the availability of highly active antiretroviral therapy. HIV causes nervous system disease at all stages of infection with adverse effects on quality of life, adherence to medications, employment and survival. These disorders include opportunistic infections in addition to distinct HIV-associated neurological syndromes and undesirable treatment-related effects. The latter two groups of disorders are often undiagnosed and untreated in bo

Obesity: a modern epidemic.

It has recently become obvious that the prevalence of obesity has been rapidly increasing in the United States, as well as other countries, over the past two decades. This change has involved both sexes, all age ranges and various ethnic groups. The rising prevalence in children and adolescents is of particular concern because of the implications for negative effects on their morbidity and mortality in young adulthood. Obesity is definitely associated with a relative increase in diabetes, cardiovascular disease, various cancers, respiratory disorders in sleep, gallbladder disease and osteoarth

[An opisthorchiasis epidemic in Ukraine].

Based on the parasitologic evaluation of 3926 individuals in different climatic and geographic areas of Ukraine it has been ascertained that levels of affection of people with opisthorchiasis depend upon natural as well as social conditions, age of the examinees (but not sex of those infected), remoteness from riverbeds. The need for epidemic intelligence.

The past decade has witnessed an unprecedented upturn in tuberculosis morbidity and outbreaks of difficult- to-treat and highly lethal multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. In the early 1990s, a national consensus developed among public health officials to define more comprehensively the problem, and in January 1993, expanded tuberculosis surveillance was implemented nationwide. Carefully selected epidemiologic and case management variables were added to the Report of Verified Case of Tuberculosis form. Information is collected on the health status and treatment of patients, including human immuno

[Etiology of epidemic parotitis].

Blood samples of 204 acute parotitis patients in a fifteen month period (1991-1992) were systematically examined for IgM, IgA, IgG antibodies of mumps and parainfluenza-virus 1, 2, 3 (PIV) by immunofluorescent test (IFT) and, in special cases several other virological examinations have been done. [Pertussis. Study of an epidemic].

Forty-six children seen during 1989 with the clinical diagnosis of Pertussis are reviewed in this study. In 64.5% of the cases the Bordet-Gengou medium nasopharyngeal culture was positive for B. pertussis. Two age groups showed more susceptibility to B. pertussis, children under one year of age (70%) and of more than five years of age (20%). The disease was of more severity among infants younger than two months of age (apnea, choking spells, etc.). Most infants needed to be admitted to the hospital. All patients received therapy with erythromycin, salbutamol (80%) and general supportive medica
