Why is it easier to predict the epidemic curve than to reconstruct the underlying contact network?

We study the deterministic Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) epidemic model on weighted graphs. van Mieghem et al. have shown that it is possible to learn an estimated network from a finite time sample of the trajectories of the dynamics that in turn can give an accurate prediction beyond the sample time range, even though the estimated network might be qualitatively far from the ground truth. We give a mathematically rigorous derivation for this phenomenon, notably that for large networks, prediction of the epidemic curves is robust, while reconstructing the underlying network is ill-con

Disease extinction in finite time for a continuous-time SIRS model.

This paper addresses the problem of controlling the spread of an epidemic through a multiplicatively controlled SIRS model, in which the control input modulates the infection rate in a bilinear manner. Classical approaches based on asymptotic stability only guarantee disease eradication as time tends to infinity, which may be inadequate for timely and effective intervention. To overcome this limitation, we investigate the finite-time behavior of the infected population, ensuring its convergence to zero either in finite time (FTS) or within a fixed time independent of the initial conditions (Fx

Observer-Based Source Localization in Tree Infection Networks via Laplace Transforms.

We address the problem of localizing the source of infection in an undirected, tree-structured network under a susceptible-infected outbreak model. The infection propagates with independent random time increments (i.e., edge-delays) between neighboring nodes, while only the infection times of a subset of nodes can be observed. We show that a reduced set of observers may be sufficient, in the statistical sense, to localize the source and characterize its identifiability via the joint Laplace transform of the observers' infection times. Using the explicit form of these transforms in terms of the

Significance of supervision sampling in control of communicable respiratory disease simulated by a new model during different stages of the disease.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) interventions in interrupting transmission have paid heavy losses politically and economically. The Chinese government has replaced scaling up testing with monitoring focus groups and randomly supervising sampling, encouraging scientific research on the COVID-19 transmission curve to be confirmed by constructing epidemiological models, which include statistical models, computer simulations, mathematical illustrations of the pathogen and its effects, and several other methodologies. Although predicting and forecasting the propagation of COVID-19 are valua…

Integrate-and-fire model of disease transmission.

We create an epidemiological susceptible-infected-susceptible model of disease transmission using integrate-and-fire nodes on a network, allowing memory of previous interactions and infections. Agents in the network sum infectious matter from their nearest neighbors at every time step, until they exceed their infection threshold, at which point they "fire" and become infected for as long as the recovery time. The model has memory of previous interactions by tracking the amount of infectious matter carried by agents as well as just binary infected or susceptible states, and the model has memory

Analytical and data-driven fractional-order malaria transmission model with vector and non-vector pathways.

BACKGROUND: Classical malaria models often focus solely on vector-borne transmission and employ integer-order dynamics that neglect memory effects. Yet malaria spread can also occur through non-vector exposure routes, and its progression is influenced by historical infection and immunity patterns. To capture these effects, a fractional-order modeling approach is required. METHODS: We develop a Caputo fractional-order malaria model of order [Formula: see text] that integrates both vector and non-vector transmission pathways while embedding memory effects in human and mosquito dynamics. Analytic

flepiMoP: The evolution of a flexible infectious disease modeling pipeline during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic led to an unprecedented demand for projections of disease burden and healthcare utilization under scenarios ranging from unmitigated spread to strict social distancing policies. In response, members of the Johns Hopkins Infectious Disease Dynamics Group developed flepiMoP (formerly called the COVID Scenario Modeling Pipeline), a comprehensive open-source software pipeline designed for creating and simulating compartmental models of infectious disease transmission and inferring parameters through these models. The framework has been used extensively to produce short-term f

Investigation and application of a classical piecewise hybrid with a fractional derivative for the epidemic model: Dynamical transmission and modeling.

In this research, we developed an epidemic model with a combination of Atangana-Baleanu Caputo derivative and classical operators for the hybrid operator's memory effects, allowing us to observe the dynamics and treatment effects at different time phases of syphilis infection caused by sex. The developed model properties, which take into account linear growth and Lipschitz requirements relating the rate of effects within its many sub-compartments according to the equilibrium points, include positivity, unique solution, exitance, and boundedness in the feasible domain. African based researchers' output on models for the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases and public health interventions: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Applied epidemiological models are used in predicting future trends of diseases, for the basic understanding of disease and health dynamics, and to improve the measurement of health indicators. Mapping the research outputs of epidemiological modelling studies concerned with transmission dynamics of infectious diseases and public health interventions in Africa will help to identify the areas with substantial levels of research activities, areas with gaps, and research output trends. METHODS: A scoping review of applied epidemiological models of infectious disease studies that invol…

Particulate air pollution and asthma: a review of epidemiological and biological studies.

The link between exposure to air pollution and exacerbation of asthma symptoms has been investigated by epidemiological study and by direct biological experimentation. In asthmatics, epidemiological studies generally show a positive correlation between the particulate fraction of air pollution and increased morbidity, although roles for other co-pollutants (for example, ozone) are implicated as well. Direct experimentation using air pollutants, especially particles, to investigate their effects on humans or on animal models of asthma provides corroboration of the epidemiology and has begun to

Determinants of variation in epidemiological parameters for African Swine Fever virus.

African Swine Fever (ASF) is an infectious reportable disease of swine that can have devastating consequences for pork producers and consumers. ASF virus can persist in either domestic or wild swine through several epidemiological cycles. This has led to a wide variety of epidemiological traits, making it challenging to plan effective surveillance and mitigation strategies. Here, we compile and analyze data from experimental infections of ASF virus variants from genotype II that have been reported in peer-reviewed publications. We provide descriptive summaries of the distributions of epidemiol

Traumatic brain injury and Alzheimer's disease related neurodegenerative diseases: Insights from animal models.

Alzheimer's disease and related neurodegenerative diseases (ADRD) represent a major global public health challenge, with their disease mechanisms remain largely unknown, and few treatments are available. Increasing epidemiological evidence underscores the critical role of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the initiation and progression of ADRD, suggesting shared pathogenic mechanisms between these conditions. While there are still lack of perfect AD models in the field, TBI models may serve as useful and alternative platforms for investigating ADRD. In this review we delineate the definition and

Seropositivity and Risk Factors for Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum in Intensive Dairy Cattle from Different Farms in Central Chile.

Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum are apicomplexan parasites infecting cattle, with implications for public health and livestock productivity, respectively. Since effective vaccines against these parasites are not currently available, identifying epidemiological factors associated with infection is important for improving control strategies. This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence of both parasites and to identify factors associated with seropositivity in intensive dairy cattle in central Chile. A cross-sectional study was conducted using serum samples from 567 cattle, analyzed by

Unifying human infectious disease models and real-time awareness of population- and subpopulation-level intervention effectiveness.

During infectious disease outbreaks, humans often base their decision to adhere to an intervention strategy on individual choices and opinio … omes. Incorporating behavioural functions that modify infection control intervention adherence into epidemiological models can aid our understanding of adherence dynamics during outbreaks. Ultimately, by parameterizing models with what we know about human behaviour towards vaccination adherence, such models can help assist decision-makers during outbreaks.

Influence of environmental, geographic, socio-demographic, and epidemiological factors on presence of malaria at the community level in two continents.

The interactions of environmental, geographic, socio-demographic, and epidemiological factors in shaping mosquito-borne disease transmission dynamics are complex and changeable, influencing the abundance and distribution of vectors and the pathogens they transmit. In this study, 27 years of cross-sectional malaria survey data (1990-2017) were used to examine the effects of these factors on Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax malaria presence at the community level in Africa and Asia. Monthly long-term, open-source data for each factor were compiled and analyzed using generalized linear

[The contaminated chocolate epidemic of 1987].

The article describes a nationwide outbreak of Salmonella typhimurium infection in 1987 caused by contaminated chocolate products from one particular factory. A total of 349 bacteriologically verified cases were recorded. It was estimated, however, that 20,000-40,000 persons became ill during the outbreak. We describe the epidemiological and bacteriological investigations which led to identification of the source of infection, and discuss two epidemiological models for investigation of food-borne outbreaks. The article emphasizes the importance of collaboration between the community health ser…
