Pneumatic Relaxation Oscillator with Passive Components for Continuous Toes Movement.

Continuous passive motion of the toes improves blood circulation and may help ankle injuries heal faster. Soft devices are more appropriate than rigid devices to accommodate a variety of foot shapes. Most conventional pneumatic soft robots are actuated cyclically by solenoid valves, which require large amounts of power for valves and controllers. In this paper, we introduce a pneumatic oscillator comprised only of passive elements. The device is implemented with a relaxation oscillator based on RC filters from pneumatic components and connected to an inflatable soft actuator. We measured the in

An Implantable Ciliary Muscle LFP Recording and Transmitting System.

In this work, we present a sclera-attachable eye implant to measure ciliary muscle local field potentials (LFPs) as a demonstrator for a preclinical study. The recorded values can be plotted and filtered in real-time. It records with a single differential channel with sampling rates of up to 250 Hz and offers a programmable gain amplifier. We show the measurement quality with in vivo measurements. The system is powered by a CR1025 coin cell battery and different measures are presented to improve measurement quality and run-time. The impact of battery non-idealities is investigated. The implant

"Stamp the tunnel"- Innovative tool - for perfection in manual small incision cataract surgery.

BACKGROUND: Manual small incision cataract surgery (SICS) is a cost-effective and safe procedure offering comparable outcomes to phacoemulsification. It holds significance for outreach and economically disadvantaged patients in developing countries, while also being important for complex cataracts in developed nations. The SICS technique revolves around a three planar self-sealing sclero corneal tunnel (SCT), a critical element for rapid and suture-less healing. The tunnel's components include the incision, side pocket, internal entry, and depth each affecting astigmatism and successful nucleu

Development of subgingival calculus detector utilizing optical fiber: Verification of its potential for clinical application.

The removal of subgingival deposits, especially calculus, plays a crucial role in basic periodontal therapy. However, manual detection methods affect accuracy owing to the operator's skill. To avoid this uncertainty, we have developed a calculus detection device named "Sensor probe" and evaluated its ability to detect calculus for future clinical applications. The Sensor probe consisted of a 635 nm-wavelength semiconductor laser and a 0.5 mm-diameter single-mode optical fiber. Initially, the performance of the device was evaluated using clinically obtained extracted teeth with calculus covered

Development of a Low-Frequency Piezoelectric Ultrasonic Transducer for Biological Tissue Sonication.

The safety of ultrasound exposure is very important for a patient's well-being. High-frequency (1-10 MHz) ultrasound waves are highly absorbed by biological tissue and have limited therapeutic effects on internal organs. This article presents the results of the development and application of a low-frequency (20-100 kHz) ultrasonic transducer for sonication of biological tissues. Using the methodology of digital twins, consisting of virtual and physical twins, an ultrasonic transducer has been developed that emits a focused ultrasound signal that penetrates into deeper biological tissues. For t

Bio-Inspired Soft Grippers Based on Impactive Gripping.

Grasping and manipulation are fundamental ways for many creatures to interact with their environments. Different morphologies and grasping methods of "grippers" are highly evolved to adapt to harsh survival conditions. For example, human hands and bird feet are composed of rigid frames and soft joints. Compared with human hands, some plants like Drosera do not have rigid frames, so they can bend at arbitrary points of the body to capture their prey. Furthermore, many muscular hydrostat animals and plant tendrils can implement more complex twisting motions in 3D space. Recently, inspired by the

Multimode Grasping Soft Gripper Achieved by Layer Jamming Structure and Tendon-Driven Mechanism.

Robotic grasping has become increasingly important in many application areas such as industrial manufacturing and logistics. Because of the diversity and uncertainty of objects and environments, common grippers with one single grasping mode face difficulties to fulfill all the tasks. Hence, we proposed a soft gripper with multiple grasping modes in this study. The gripper consists of four modular soft fingers integrated with layer jamming structure and tendon-driven mechanism. Each finger's rotating shaft of the base uses a torsional spring to decouple the bending deformation and relative rota

Design and development of a digital stethoscope encapsulation for simultaneous acquisition of phonocardiography and electrocardiography signals: the SmartHeart case study.

The stethoscope is a major symbol of modern medicine. It is used for diagnosis of different conditions and enables physicians to listen to internal body sounds. Electrocardiography was only introduced in medicine in the beginning of the twentieth century. Today measuring heart's electrical activity is also fundamental cardiac diseases diagnosis. Although performed with independent devices, requiring physician and patient presence in the same physical space, in combination they enhance cardiovascular assessment. In this paper, a digital stethoscope encapsulation was designed, adding new functio

An Origami Continuum Robot Capable of Precise Motion Through Torsionally Stiff Body and Smooth Inverse Kinematics.

Continuum robot arms, with their hyper-redundant continuously deformable bodies, show great promise in applications deemed impossible for traditional rigid robot arms with discrete links and joints, such as navigating tight corners without getting stuck. However, existing continuum robots suffer from excessive twisting when subjected to offset loading, even resulting from their own body weight, which reduces their dexterity and precision. In this work, we present a continuum manipulator that is capable of providing passive torsional stiffness through an origami-inspired modular design, remedyi

High-speed dual-view photoacoustic imaging pen.

Today, photoacoustic imaging (PAI) is widely used to study diseases in the skin, brain, cardiovascular, and other parts. However, these studies are often carried out using physiological slices or model animals, which indicate that many PAI techniques can only be used in the laboratory. In order to promote the transformation of PAI into clinical applications or, more specifically, to extend the application of photoacoustic (PA) microscopy to areas such as the oral cavity, throat, cervix, and abdominal viscera which are difficult to detect with conventional PA microscopy systems, a PAI pen was d

In-vitro analysis of a novel 'add-on' silicone cuff to improve sealing properties of tracheal tubes.

Leakage of colonised oropharyngeal secretions across the tracheal tube cuff may cause iatrogenic pulmonary infection. We studied a novel 'add-on' cuff, which can be inserted over an existing tracheal tube and advanced into the subglottic region. The physical properties of the novel silicone cuff (BronchoGuard, Ciel Medical, USA) were evaluated in comparison with the Hi-Lo® tracheal tube. In a bench study, we identified saline inflation volumes required to transmit pressures between 15 and 30 cmH2 O against artificial tracheas of 18, 20 and 22 mm internal diameter. We computed cuff compliance,

Elbow training device using the Mechanically Adjustable Stiffness Actuator(MASA).

This paper presents an elbow training device using the Mechanically Adjustable Stiffness Actuator(MASA) for stroke survivors with hemiplegia. The MASA is a series elastic actuator whose mechanical stiffness is variable. Stiffness and the neutral position of the spring is mechanically changed using two identical actuators. Since assisting torque of the actuators is transmitted through the springs, changing stiffness of the MASA results in different level of assistance by the actuators. Then, according to the performance of the patients during given tracking tasks, the level of assistance is con

Real-time endoscopic image orientation correction system using an accelerometer and gyrosensor.

The discrepancy between spatial orientations of an endoscopic image and a physician's working environment can make it difficult to interpret endoscopic images. In this study, we developed and evaluated a device that corrects the endoscopic image orientation using an accelerometer and gyrosensor. The acceleration of gravity and angular velocity were retrieved from the accelerometer and gyrosensor attached to the handle of the endoscope. The rotational angle of the endoscope handle was calculated using a Kalman filter with transmission delay compensation. Technical evaluation of the orientation

Design and development of platform ankle rehabilitation robot with Shape Memory Alloy based actuator.

Various ankle rehabilitation robots have been developed in the recent decade to improve ankle strength and mobility and to alleviate the burdens on clinicians and physiotherapists. However, existing designs have stiff actuating mechanism, heavy and bulky electromagnetic or pneumatic actuators. This paper introduces ankle rehabilitation robot that utilizes Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wire actuator to provide foot plantarflexion and dorsiflexion during rehabilitation exercise. SMA wire is a smart material that can contract when it is heated and expand back to its original shape when it is cooled. I

Preliminary Assessment of a Compliant Gait Exoskeleton.

Current commercial wearable gait exoskeletons contain joints with stiff actuators that cannot adapt to unpredictable environments. These actuators consume a significant amount of energy, and their stiffness may not be appropriate for safe human-machine interactions. Adjustable compliant actuators are being designed and implemented because of their ability to minimize large forces due to shocks, to safely interact with the user, and to store and release energy in passive elastic elements. Introduction of such compliant actuation in gait exoskeletons, however, has been limited by the larger powe
