Neural correlates of active controlled retrieval development: An exploratory ERP study.

Working memory is composed of different processes and encompasses not only the temporary storage of information but also its manipulation in order to perform complex cognitive activities. During childhood, one of these manipulation processes, namely active controlled retrieval, improves significantly between the age of 6 to 10, suggesting that the neuronal network supporting this function undergoes substantial maturational changes. The present study examined the neural activity of 14 healthy children and 14 adults while performing an active controlled retrieval task. Results showed differences

A multi-task learning approach for the extraction of single-trial evoked potentials.

Evoked potentials (EPs) are of great interest in neuroscience, but their measurement is difficult as they are embedded in background spontaneous electroencephalographic (EEG) activity which has a much larger amplitude. The widely used averaging technique requires the delivery of a large number of identical stimuli and yields only an "average" EP which does not allow the investigation of the possible variability of single-trial EPs. In the present paper, we propose the use of a multi-task learning method (MTL) for the simultaneous extraction of both the average and the N single-trial EPs from N

Inter- and intra-hemispheric processing of visual event-related potentials in the absence of the corpus callosum.

Interhemispheric differences of the N100 latency in visual evoked potentials have been used to estimate interhemispheric transfer time (e.g., Saron & Davidson, 1989). Recent work has also suggested that the P300 component could reflect the efficacy of interhemispheric transmission (Polich & Hoffman, 1998). The purpose of the present study was to study the differential role of the corpus callosum (CC) and anterior commissure (AC) in the interhemispheric propagation of these two electrophysiological components. Thus, the amplitude and latency distribution of the N100 and P300 components were ana

Neural Responses to Signals for Behavior Change: Greater Within-Person Variability is Associated With Risk Factors for Substance Dependence.

BACKGROUND: An impaired ability to change behavior in the face of cues indicating a need for change is one means of defining risk for substance dependence. The present study used a cognitive task administered in a laboratory as a model of this process. It focused on 2 known and related correlates of risk (conduct disorder, borderline personality disorder) and examined their associations with reactivity to cues requesting a change in motor behavior. METHODS: A total of 224 teenagers, 14 to 19 years of age, performed a task during which white noise bursts were used to cue a requirement to rever

Target-related parietal P3 and medial frontal theta index the genetic risk for problematic substance use.

Theoretical and empirical work suggests that problematic substance use (PSU) is associated with individual differences in prefrontal cortex activity. While research has strongly linked parietal P3 amplitude reduction (P3AR) to genetic risk for problematic substance use, few studies have tested whether prefrontal EEG measures are sensitive to this genetic liability. In addition to P3, oddball target detection tasks elicit medial frontal theta power, reflecting attentional allocation, and parietal delta, indexing decision making or stimulus-response link updating. Midfrontal theta and parietal d

(Re)-wiring a brain with light: Clinical and visual processing findings after application of specific coloured glasses in patients with symptoms of a visual processing disorder (CVPD): Challenge of a possible new perspective?

The present investigation examined whether changes of electrophysiological late event related potential pattern could be used to reflect clinical changes from therapeutic intervention with coloured glasses in a group of patients with symptoms of central visual processing disorder. Subjects consisted of 13 patients with average age 16years (range 6-51years) with attention problems and learning disability, respectively. These patients were provided with specified coloured glasses which were required to be used during day time. Results indicated that specified coloured glasses significantly impro

Brain correlates of risky decision-making.

Understanding the neurocognitive basis of risk-taking behavior is an important issue, especially in economic decision-making. Classical behavioral studies have shown that risk-attitude changes across different contexts, but little is so far known about the brain correlates of processing of outcomes across such context shifts. In this study, EEG was recorded while subjects performed a gambling task. Participants could choose between a risky and a safer option, within two different contexts: one in which options yielded gains and losses of the same magnitude (Zero Expected Value context) and ano

[School phobia and childhood chronic fatigue syndrome (CCFS)].

Chronic fatigue occurring in previously healthy children and adolescents is a vexing problem encountered by pediatric practitioners and the impact of fatigue in youngsters should not be underestimated. In its severe form, it is often associated with mood disorders. Findings in children and adolescent cases suggest that severe unexplained fatigue might precede the development of fatigue-related illness, such as childhood chronic fatigue syndrome (CCFS). This is a disabling condition characterized by severe disabling fatigue and a combination of symptoms, the prominent features being self-report

Beyond single-person paradigms: N400 alterations in a social context in schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: Impairments in social cognition and context-dependent information processing constitute prominent features of schizophrenia. Among event-related potentials (ERPs), the N400 is known to be sensitive to semantic and social contextual information. However, its role in social contexts has received limited attention in schizophrenia research, as previous studies have largely examined the N400 in isolated, single-person paradigms or have focused on the P300 component. METHODS: In this study, we examined the N400 ERP component in a real-world social context using EEG hyperscanning. Pat

Event-related potentials reveal visual episodic memory deficits in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients usually suffer from impaired episodic memory (EM), but its underlying electrophysiologic mechanism and impacted cognitive performance are unclear. We aim to investigate the association between episodic memory reserve and physiological measures of memory workload in TLE patients using Event-related potentials (ERP). METHODS: A change detection task with image stimuli assesses visual episodic memory. During the memory encoding and decoding phases, the ERP signals were analyzed from twenty-nine TLE patients (twelve with left TLE patients, seventee

Reduced visual P300 amplitudes in individuals at ultra-high risk for psychosis and first-episode schizophrenia.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether individuals at ultra-high risk (UHR) for psychosis and patients experiencing first-episode schizophrenia had impairments in visual information processing as indexed by the visual P300 event-related potential. Sixteen UHR individuals, 21 first-episode schizophrenia patients, and 16 healthy controls were included. Participants were asked to perform a visuospatial oddball task while undergoing an electroencephalogram. The UHR and first-episode groups showed reduced P300 amplitudes in comparison to healthy controls. P300 amplitudes were negative

P300 abnormalities in patients with selective impairment of recent memory.

We recorded auditory event-related potential (ERP) by using the standard oddball paradigm in seven amnestic patients. Patients were divided into three groups according to brain CT or MRI findings. (1) Three patients with no detectable lesion, including two patients studied during the episode of transient global amnesia, showed a well-defined P300. (2) Three patients with detectable lesions in the mesial temporal lobes did not show any wave form corresponding to P300. In two of these three patients, the ERP wave form showed a significant change in accordance with the improvement of MRI findings

Physiological regulation of thinking: brain-computer interface (BCI) research.

The discovery of event-related desynchronization (ERD) and event-related synchronization (ERS) by Pfurtscheller paved the way for the development of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). BCIs allow control of computers or external devices with the regulation of brain activity only. Two different research traditions produced two different types of BCIs: invasive BCIs, realized with implanted electrodes in brain tissue and noninvasive BCIs using electrophysiological recordings in humans such as electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) and metabolic changes such as functional mag

Neural correlates of the implicit processing of grammatical and stereotypical gender violations: A masked and unmasked priming study.

The aim of this study was to explore the neural correlates of the automatic activation of gender stereotypes by using the masked and unmasked priming technique. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while participants were presented with an Italian third-person singular pronoun (lui or lei) that were preceded by either a grammatically-marked (e.g., passeggeraFEM, pensionatoMASC) or stereotypically-associated (e.g., insegnanteFEM, conducenteMASC) role noun. Participants were required to judge the grammatical gender of the personal pronoun ignoring the preceding word. This word was prese

Pre-intervention test-retest reliability of EEG and ERP over four recording intervals.

In this study we present the test-retest reliability of pre-intervention EEG/ERP (electroencephalogram/event-related potentials) data across four recording intervals separated by a washout period (18-22 days). POz-recording-reference EEG/ERP (28 sites, average reference) were recorded from thirty-two healthy male participants. Participants were randomly allocated into different intervention sequences, each with four intervention regimens: 10 mg vortioxetine, 20 mg vortioxetine, 15 mg escitalopram and Placebo. We report classical EEG spectra: δ (1-4 Hz), θ (4-8 Hz), α (8-12 Hz), β (12-30 Hz), γ

Hot-cold water sound perception and auditory-thermal discrimination.

This study aimed to determine whether individuals can discriminate the temperature state of water using auditory cues alone and to identify the acoustic, perceptual, and neurocognitive factors associated with this ability. Sixty-three volunteers aged 18-25 years with normal hearing participated. Participants were presented with prerecorded sounds of hot and cold water being poured into four types of cups (glass, plastic, paper, porcelain) and completed discrimination and matching tasks while auditory processing and event-related potential measures were obtained. Results from Spectral-Temporall

Impact of theta transcranial alternating current stimulation on language production in adult classic galactosemia patients.

Patients with classic galactosemia (CG), an inborn error of galactose metabolism, suffer from impairments in cognition, including language processing. Potential causes are atypical brain oscillations. Recent electroencephalogram (EEG) showed differences in the P300 event-related-potential (ERP) and alterations in the alpha/theta-range during speech planning. This study investigated whether transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) at theta-frequency compared to sham can cause a normalization of the ERP post stimulation and improves language performance. Eleven CG patients and fourtee
