Determinants of delay in treatment-seeking among malaria patients attending health facilities in Ethiopia from 2010 to 2024: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Malaria continues to rank among the most concerning vector-borne infectious diseases affecting sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia. Effective malaria case management largely depends on the timing of treatment seeking. Patients who sought care more than 24 h after symptoms began were more likely to develop severe malaria. Concrete evidence can be generated by systematic reviews and meta-analyses, which may assist programme managers and policymakers in designing effective interventions. Therefore, the goal of this study was to assess the pooled prevalence and determinants of delay

Smart dual imprinted Origami 3D-ePAD for selective and simultaneous analysis of vanillylmandelic acid and 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid carcinoid cancer biomarkers using graphene quantum dots coated with dual molecularly imprinted polymers.

Measuring the levels of the biomarkers vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) and 5-Hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid (5-HIAA) is a valuable tool for clinical diagnosis not only of neuroblastoma or carcinoid syndrome, but also of essential hypertension, depression, migraine, and Tourette's syndrome. Herein, we explore using graphene quantum dots (GQDs) coated with molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) as novel dual-imprinted sensors for selective and simultaneous determination of VMA and 5-HIAA in urine and plasma samples. The dual-MIP was successfully coated on the GQDs core via co-polymerization of (3-aminopro

What Is the Quality of Surgical Care for Patients with Hip Fractures at Critical Access Hospitals?

BACKGROUND: Critical access hospitals (CAHs) play an important role in providing access to care for many patients in rural communities. Prior studies have shown that these facilities are able to provide timely and quality care for patients who undergo various elective and emergency general surgical procedures. However, little is known about the quality and reimbursement of surgical care for patients undergoing surgery for hip fractures at CAHs compared with non-CAH facilities. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: Are there any differences in 90-day complications, readmissions, mortality, and Medicare payments

"Problems you can live with" versus emergencies: how community members in rural Ethiopia contend with conditions requiring surgery.

BACKGROUND: 98% of people with surgical conditions living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) do not receive safe, timely and affordable surgical and anesthesia care. Research exploring barriers to receiving care has tended to be narrow in focus, often facility-based and ignoring the community beliefs, experiences and behaviours that will be an essential component of closing the gap in surgical care. Using qualitative methods, we captured diverse community perspectives in rural Ethiopia: exploring beliefs, perceptions, knowledge and experiences related to surgical conditions, with the

Evaluating the History-Taking Process of Sexual Reproductive Health Problems in Tanzania: Lessons from a Study of Health Students and Practitioners.

Building trust and therapeutic relationships between healthcare providers and patients are crucial for delivering high-quality, comprehensive sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services. Yet, while patients face substantial SRH disparities in Tanzania, little is known about health care professionals' [HCPs] SRH history-taking practices and experiences. This paper describes HCPs' interdisciplinary practices, experience in conducting SRH taking, and the critical lessons learned to optimize quality SRH care. We conducted 18 focus group discussions in June 2019 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, with 6

Effects of Anma massage therapy (Japanese massage) for gynecological cancer survivors: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cancer patients and survivors regularly feel anxious about cancer recurrence or death, even after the conclusion of medical treatment, and they are often highly physiologically and psychologically stressed. Massage therapy is one of the most widely used complementary and alternative therapies used in the hope of alleviating such stress and physical and psychological complaints and to improve health-related quality of life. This randomized phase III, two-armed, parallel group, clinical trial was designed after obtaining positive findings in a preliminary study. The primary objective

The effectiveness of interventions aimed at reducing anxiety in health care waiting spaces: a systematic review of randomized and nonrandomized trials.

BACKGROUND: Reducing waiting anxiety is an important objective of patient-centered care. Anxiety is linked to negative health outcomes, including longer recovery periods, lowered pain thresholds, and for children in particular, resistance to treatment, nightmares, and separation anxiety. The goals of this study were (1) to systematically review published research aimed at reducing preprocedural waiting anxiety, and (2) to provide directions for future research and development of strategies to manage preprocedural waiting anxiety in health care environments. METHODS: We performed a systematic

Adherence to Iron and Folic Acid Supplementation and its determinants among pregnant women in East Africa: Analysis of Demographic and Health Surveys data from nine East African countries.

INTRODUCTION: Anemia due to deficiency of nutrients like iron and folic acid (IFA) is one of the global public health issues that has contributed to an unacceptably high proportion of maternal and childhood morbidity and mortality. IFA supplementation (IFAS) during pregnancy is critical for reducing anemia and related undesired outcomes. However, comprehensive evidence on the magnitude of adherence to IFA supplementation and its associated factors in East Africa remains limited. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess the level of adherence to IFAS during pregnancy and to identif

Predictors of maternal health services utilization by poor, rural women: a comparative study in Indian States of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.

BACKGROUND: India leads all nations in numbers of maternal deaths, with poor, rural women contributing disproportionately to the high maternal mortality ratio. In 2005, India launched the world's largest conditional cash transfer scheme, Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), to increase poor women's access to institutional delivery, anticipating that facility-based birthing would decrease deaths. Indian states have taken different approaches to implementing JSY. Tamil Nadu adopted JSY with a reorganization of its public health system, and Gujarat augmented JSY with the state-funded Chiranjeevi Yojana

Maternal and Fetal Outcomes Associated With Scrub Typhus in Pregnancy: A Systematic Review.

Scrub typhus, caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi and transmitted by larval trombiculid mites, is endemic across much of the Asia-Pacific region. It is frequently missed or misdiagnosed in pregnant individuals, where its consequences may be severe. Despite the severe maternal and fetal risks associated with scrub typhus, a comprehensive synthesis of the infection's total burden during pregnancy remains a critical gap in the literature. We searched five bibliographic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE Ultimate, ClinicalKey, and Ovid Embase), four trial registries (World Health Organization Interna

Barriers and facilitators to health promotion behaviours in women with polycystic ovary syndrome and infertility who are actively trying to conceive: a qualitative study using the COM-B model and the Theoretical Domains Framework.

BACKGROUND: The 2023 International Evidence-based Guideline on polycystic ovary syndrome assessment and management recommends healthcare providers promote healthy lifestyles for all women with polycystic ovary syndrome, particularly emphasizing lifestyle modification for those with infertility during preconception care. Health promotion behaviours (HPBs) refer to proactive, multidimensional actions individuals adopt to improve health outcomes. Recommended HPBs encompass five domains: health responsibility, nutrition, physical activity, social support, and emotional regulation. However, limited

Preperitoneal Pelvic Packing for Hypotension Has a Greater Risk of Venous Thromboembolism Than Angioembolization: Management of Refractory Hypotension in Closed Pelvic Ring Injury.

BACKGROUND: Patients with traumatic pelvic ring injury may present with hypotension secondary to hemorrhage. Preperitoneal pelvic packing (PPP) and angioembolization (AE) are alternative interventions for management of hypotension associated with pelvic ring injury refractory to resuscitation and circumferential compression. We hypothesized that PPP may be independently associated with increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) compared with AE in patients with hypotension and pelvic ring injury. METHODS: Adult patients with pelvic ring injury and hypotension managed with PPP or AE were r

Best Practices for Storage of Reusable Medical Devices in the Military Health System.

INTRODUCTION: The storage of reusable medical devices (RMDs) is the final reprocessing phase and the step that directly precedes point-of-care delivery. Reusable medical devices, including surgical tools necessitating sterilization and semicritical devices such as endoscopes, undergo high-level disinfection. The rigorous reprocessing protocols and subsequent storage of RMDs are crucial in preserving their sterility and asepsis. This ensures they are available, clean, and safe for patient use, thereby significantly reducing the risk of surgical site infection. The stringent requirements for RMD

Violence-related deaths among people released from incarceration: systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: People released from incarceration have an increased risk of violence-related death. As deaths from violence are a rare event, meta-analysis is needed to calculate reliable estimates of this risk. We examined the crude mortality rates (CMRs), standardised mortality ratios (SMRs), and predictive factors for violence-related deaths among people released from incarceration. METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched MEDLINE, PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science, CINCH, and Criminal Justice Abstracts from inception to 14 September 2020 for cohort studies pub
