Cognitive intervention for voice hearers.

Cognitive behavioral therapy is an emerging treatment being used to attenuate negative thoughts and emotions tied to the formation, expression, and maintenance of verbal auditory hallucinations. This paper describes the theoretical underpinnings for the intervention and a clinical application of a prototype cognitive nursing intervention for treating faulty thinking and beliefs linked with problematic voice hearing experiences. The paper ends with a review of current evidence and implications concerning the efficacy of cognitive intervention approaches with voice hearers.

Supporting the Couple With Female Dyspareunia.

Patients receiving treatment for cancer often experience changes in sexual functioning but may be hesitant to ask questions. This article focuses on ways in which nurses can support patients and their partners and address their concerns through various evidence-based interventions. At a Glance • Sexuality, as well as how it is affected by cancer and its treatment, is an important aspect of holistic nursing care. • Sexuality is not often brought up by nurses because of concern about a lack of evidence-based interventions. • Many of the skills needed to inquire about sexual concerns are those th

Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children: A Descriptive Study with California School Nurses.

California reports some of the highest rates of human trafficking in the U.S., including the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC). Victims are often 11-14 years old and attend school, placing school nurses in a critical position to identify and respond. Yet, many school nurses face challenges due to limited training and the absence of standardized screening tools. This project aimed to (1) develop an evidence-based educational module on human trafficking, including CSEC, for California school nurses, and (2) gather feedback on a validated 6-item CSEC screening tool by Greenbaum et

Congruence between perceived and theoretical knowledge before and after an internet-based continuing education program about venous leg ulcer nursing care.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has revealed nurses' knowledge gaps in venous leg ulcer (VLU) nursing care, and continuing education is needed. The closer nurses' perceived knowledge is to their evidence-based theoretical knowledge, the better possibilities they have to conduct evidence-based VLU nursing care. OBJECTIVES: To assess the congruence between nurses' perceived and theoretical knowledge about VLU nursing care before and after an internet-based education about VLU nursing care (eVLU). DESIGN: Quasi-experimental study with intervention and comparison groups and pre- and post-measureme

Quality Improvement Project to Improve Systemwide Nursing Clinical Orientation.

A quality improvement initiative standardized nursing clinical orientation (NCO) across a multicampus health system using the Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate (ADDIE) instructional design model and the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles. Campus-specific programs were merged into a unified model that improved efficiency, engagement, and collaboration between nursing education and interdepartmental partners. The redesign reallocated 8.0 full-time equivalents (FTEs) to clinical education and enhanced learner satisfaction. New-hire engagement rose by 17% within one quarter, confirmin

Using the 12-lead ECG to diagnose acute myocardial infarction in the presence of left bundle branch block.

The 12-lead ECG is a powerful clinical tool used to risk stratify patients presenting to the emergency department with chest pain. In particular the ECG is used as the diagnostic tool to instigate reperfusion therapy in patients with acute coronary syndromes. The ECG features of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) may be masked by the presence of left bundle branch block (LBBB) and the ECG may be difficult to interpret. Invariably this results in delays to the provision of thrombolysis to these patients despite the mounting body of evidence which demonstrates that patients with AMI who present w

Barriers and facilitators to preventing pressure ulcers in nursing home residents: A qualitative analysis informed by the Theoretical Domains Framework.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers are areas of localised damage to the skin and underlying tissue; and can cause pain, immobility, and delay recovery, impacting on health-related quality of life. The individuals who are most at risk of developing a pressure ulcer are those who are seriously ill, elderly, have impaired mobility and/or poor nutrition; thus, many nursing home residents are at risk. OBJECTIVES: To understand the context of pressure ulcer prevention in nursing homes and to explore the potential barriers and facilitators to evidence-informed practices. METHODS: Semi-structured interview

Perceptions and needs regarding technologies in nursing homes: An exploratory study.

Two of the most salient problems in nursing homes are the responsive behaviours and falls of older people living with Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. Intelligent videomonitoring and mobile applications are potential technologies that may help prevent and manage these problems. However, evidence for the needs for technologies in nursing homes is scarce. This study aimed to explore the perceptions and needs of care managers, and of formal and family caregivers in nursing homes regarding these potential technologies. With an exploratory qualitative design based on Rogers' diffusion of

Cluster A personality disorders: considering the 'odd-eccentric' in psychiatric nursing.

Psychiatric nurses are familiar with the concept of personality disorder because of their contact with persons with the most common personality disorder in clinical settings - borderline type, who frequently engage mental health services. Perhaps it is this familiarity that has focused research and clinical attention on borderline personality disorder compared with the other personality disorders. The significance of cluster A personality disorders for nursing is multifaceted because of their severity, prevalence, inaccurate diagnosis, poor response to treatment, and similarities to axis I dia

Design and psychometric properties of an instrument to evaluate nursing students' perceptions of discrimination by nurse educators: a protocol for a mixed-method study.

INTRODUCTION: Perceived discrimination by nurse educators is a harmful phenomenon in nursing education that influences nursing students in both classroom and clinical settings. It is associated with psychological distress, reduced learning outcomes, feelings of hopelessness and higher rates of attrition. There is a need to identify the dimensions of discrimination for developing strategies to promote educational justice. This research aims to develop and test the psychometric properties of an instrument to evaluate nursing students' perceptions and experiences of discrimination by nurse educat
