UNLABELLED: The case of a 25-year-old expedition doctor who developed high altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE) while climbing in the Swiss Alps is presented, with reference to the literature. The patient's symptoms of HAPE were typical. Less typical was the fact that the doctor had previously been to similar altitudes uneventfully. The genus Nymphargus is the most speciose of the family Centrolenidae with 44 species. In this study, we describe a new species of Nymphargus and present an updated phylogeny. The new species is sister to an undescribed species, also from SW Ecuador, and both belong to a clade that includes N. buenaventura, N. cariticommatus, N. griffithsi, N. lasgralarias, N. sucre, and N. wileyi. Rodents are known to play a significant role as reservoir hosts for TBEV. During three sequential expeditions at 4-year intervals to three ecologically similar study sites in NE Poland, we trapped bank voles (Myodes glareolus) and then tested their blood for the presence of specific antiviral antibodies to TBEV. Abdominal pain is a frequent presenting complaint in the pediatric emergency department (PED). Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) can expedite the diagnosis and management of patients in the PED with abdominal pain. We present a series of 6 patient cases in which a "POCUS the pelvis" approach expedited diagnosis of undifferentiated abdominal pain in the PED, and thus facilitated definitive management.

During a hot Mediterranean summer, an expedition brought parasitologists from Brazil, France, Greece, Italy, and Serbia to a wooded area near Xanthi, Thrace, northeastern Greece, near the Turkish border, on the track of the vector of the little-known nematode Onchocerca lupi. Point of care ultrasound (POCUS) can make an expedited diagnosis, which might lead to early correct management. POCUS should be used in a systemic and integrated approach to evaluate multiple organs in patients with sepsis and septic shock. We present a rare case of sepsis due to nontyphoidal Salmonella endocarditis with splenic abscess in which a multiorgan POCUS examination led to expedited treatment.

We present updated baseline information on bats inhabiting the Vietnamese Mekong Delta based on literature review and field expeditions between 2018 and 2024. The microbial etiology of infectious corneal ulceration in Sierra Leone has been investigated. Patients either presenting to district health centers or encountered on rural surveillance expeditions with suspected infectious ulcerative keratitis were recruited into the study. Infectious corneal ulceration was defined as clinical evidence of corneal infection with epithelial defect with or without hypopyon.
