PURPOSE: To describe the optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings and progression of peculiar retinal cysts that we identified in patients being followed up after anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) treatment.
METHODS: This is an observational case series. All relevant data (including best-corrected visual acuity and spectral domain OCT scans) concerning exudative age-related macular degeneration (AMD) patients treated with at least three anti-VEGF intravitreal injections (IVT) during the previous 12 months were collected over a period of four months.

INTRODUCTION: Nanophthalmos, characterized by a short axial length (14-17 mm), is a rare disease often associated with severe glaucoma. Uveal effusion is part of the clinical ophthalmologic manifestations we should keep in mind.
CASE REPORT: A nanophthalmic patient underwent trabeculectomy. Postoperatively, examination revealed a nonrhegmatogenous retinal detachment. B scan ultrasonography confirmed thickened sclera and choroidal detachment associated with subtotal retinal detachment. Retinal and choroidal detachments gradually resolved spontaneously with no surgical intervention.

Immunoreactive endothelin has been detected in 21 of 43 samples of breast cyst fluid (21 cases; 3.5 +/- 0.6 pmol/l, mean +/- SEM. Other 22 cases; not detectable, less than 0.5 pmol/l). Fast protein liquid chromatographic analysis of the immunoreactive endothelin of pooled breast cyst fluid showed two immunoreactive peaks; one in the void volume and the other in the position of endothelin-1. It is probable that endothelin-1 is produced by the epithelial cells lining breast cysts, but significance of the presence of endothelin-1 in breast cyst fluid remains to be elucidated.

An oedematous pre-eclamptic patient received lumbar epidural analgesia during labour. Clear fluid leaked from the skin puncture site for 4 days. The fluid was analysed using protein electrophoresis for cholinesterase enzymes and was found not to contain the cerebrospinal fluid specific form of the enzyme, acetylcholinesterase. The sensitivity of this test was explored using serial dilutions of cerebrospinal fluid. It is now possible to say that the leaking fluid did not contain cerebrospinal fluid.

An infectivity inhibition micromethod was used to detect interferon (IFN) in sera and suction blister fluids from 35 patients with untreated psoriasis vulgaris. IFN (greater than or equal to 16 units/ml) was detected in 56% of the sera (median 25 units/ml), in 77% of the suction blister fluids from lesional skin (median 35 units/ml) and 33% of the blister fluids from unaffected skin (median 10 units/ml). Certain enzymes in tissues and body fluids may, through reversal of the detoxification process, influence the composition and availability of steroid hormones, toxins, and carcinogens.
