Satisfaction of search: evidence of premature termination in a naturalistic image inspection task.

In radiology and in traditional visual search tasks, the detection of a first target in an image tends to impair the detection of additional targets, a phenomenon termed satisfaction of search (SOS) or subsequent search misses. The original explanation for SOS focused on early termination of inspection after having found a first target. Tests of this hypothesis have yielded mixed results, however. Here, we developed a novel task to examine the potential role of early termination in SOS. In our "Ghosts in the Forest" task, the visual search backgrounds were contour-dense natural scene images, a

Searching for faces of different ages: Evidence for an experienced-based own-age detection advantage in adults.

Previous studies have shown that attention deployment in visual search tasks is modulated by face race and emotional expression, with a search asymmetry in favor of those faces that are less efficiently discriminated and recognized at the individual level (i.e., other-race faces and angry faces). Face age is another dimension affecting how faces are remembered, as it has been widely reported that young adults show significant deficits in recognizing other-age faces. By comparing adults' search efficiency for own- and other-age faces in a visual search task in which face age was the target feat

Closing a conceptual gap in race perception research: A functional integration of the other-race face recognition and "who said what?" paradigms.

White people confuse Black faces more than their own-race faces. This is an example of the other-race effect, commonly measured by the other-race face recognition task. Like this task, the "Who said what?" paradigm uses within-race confusions in memory, but to measure social categorization strength. The former finds a strongly asymmetrical pattern of interrace perception, the other-race effect, yet the latter usually finds symmetrical patterns (equally strong categorization of own-race and other-race faces). In a "Who said what?" meta-analysis, racial categorization and individuation across ra

Spatial tuning of face part representations within face-selective areas revealed by high-field fMRI.

Regions sensitive to specific object categories as well as organized spatial patterns sensitive to different features have been found across the whole ventral temporal cortex (VTC). However, it is unclear that within each object category region, how specific feature representations are organized to support object identification. Would object features, such as object parts, be represented in fine-scale spatial tuning within object category-specific regions? Here, we used high-field 7T fMRI to examine the spatial tuning to different face parts within each face-selective region. Our results show

A century of prosopometamorphopsia studies.

Prosopometamorphopsia is an extremely rare disorder of visual perception characterised by facial distortions. We here review 81 cases (eight new ones and 73 cases published over the past century) to shed light on the perception of face gestalts. Our analysis indicates that the brain systems underlying the perception of face gestalts have genuine network properties, in the sense that they are widely disseminated and built such that spatially normal perception of faces can be maintained even when large parts of the network are compromised. We found that bilateral facial distortions were primaril

External and internal facial features modulate processing of vertical but not horizontal spatial relations.

Some years ago an asymmetry was reported for the inversion effect for horizontal (H) and vertical (V) relational face manipulations (Goffaux & Rossion, 2007). Subsequent research examined whether a specific disruption of long-range relations underlies the H/V inversion asymmetry (Sekunova & Barton, 2008). Here, we tested how detection of changes in interocular distance (H) and eye height (V) depends on cardinal internal features and external feature surround. Results replicated the H/V inversion asymmetry. Moreover, we found very different face cue dependencies for both change types. Performan

Autonomic Responses to Emotional Stimuli in Children Affected by Facial Palsy: The Case of Moebius Syndrome.

According to embodied simulation theories, others' emotions are recognized by the unconscious mimicking of observed facial expressions, which requires the implicit activation of the motor programs that produce a specific expression. Motor responses performed during the expression of a given emotion are hypothesized to be directly linked to autonomic responses associated with that emotional behavior. We tested this hypothesis in 9 children (M age = 5.66) affected by Moebius syndrome (MBS) and 15 control children (M age = 6.6). MBS is a neurological congenital disorder characterized by underdeve

Misidentification delusions, facial misrecognition, and right brain injury.

Individuals suffering from misidentification syndromes may present with right hemispheric pathology and deficits in facial recognition. In addition, misidentification delusions have been associated with aggressive behaviour. The possible linkage between misidentification phenomena, facial recognition, and aggression is discussed, illustrated by the case of a patient suffering from an organic delusional disorder.

Three Parameters Impact the Perception of Smile Asymmetry in Patients with Facial Paralysis.

BACKGROUND: The ability to smile is impaired in patients with facial palsy, and objective parameters assessing smile symmetry to guide treatment are not well elucidated. OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to identify objective facial measurements that relate smile recognition, perception of smile asymmetry, and perceived emotions from photographs of individuals with asymmetrical smiles compared with control photographs of individuals without smile asymmetry as measured by a photograph analysis application. METHODS: Fifty-six photographs of smiles were categorized using objective perioral morphometr

Falsification and experimental psychology: examples from face perception.

The present article examines the relationships between the falsification approach as outlined in Popper (1995) and the methodological basis of experimental psychology. In view of this, I will offer suggestions that may reduce somewhat the severity of the following two problems that were raised against Popper approach: The "Duhem problem", and "contradictory-findings disregard", i.e., the fact that scientists tend to ignore findings that disconfirm their theory. These suggestions are based on the development of the "temporary closed explanatory domain" (TCED) model, which describes how the rese

The Study of Face Processing in Social Anxiety Disorder Based on Face-Specific N170 Component.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Although previous studies showed that social anxiety disorder (SAD) exhibits the attentional bias for angry faces, few studies investigated effective face recognition combined with event-related potential (ERP) technique in SAD patients, especially the treatment effect. This study examines the differences in face processing in SAD patients before and after treatment and healthy control people (H-group). High-density EEG scans were registered in response to emotional schematic faces, particularly interested in the face processing N170 component. Analysis of N170 amplitude revealed a larger N170

Mixture-modeling approach reveals global and local processes in visual crowding.

Crowding refers to the inability to recognize objects in clutter, setting a fundamental limit on various perceptual tasks such as reading and facial recognition. While prevailing models suggest that crowding is a unitary phenomenon occurring at an early level of processing, recent studies have shown that crowding might also occur at higher levels of representation. Here we investigated whether local and global crowding interference co-occurs within the same display. To do so, we tested the distinctive contribution of local flanker features and global configurations of the flankers on the patte…

High-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation enhances unfamiliar face matching of high resolution and pixelated faces.

Face identification is useful for social interactions and its impairment can lead to severe social and mental problems. This ability is also remarkably important in applied settings, including eyewitness identification and ID verification. Several studies have demonstrated the potential of Transcranial Random Noise Stimulation (tRNS) to enhance different cognitive skills. However, research has produced inconclusive results about the effectiveness of tRNS to improve face identification. The present study aims to further explore the effect of tRNS on face identification using an unfamiliar face

Social cognition in type 1 myotonic dystrophy - A mini review.

Our ability to interact with those around us plays an important role in our relationships, mental well being and ability to successfully navigate the complex social society in which we live. Research in social cognitive neuroscience aims to understand the underlying neurobiology of our social behaviours and interactions with others. Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a genetically inherited neuromuscular disorder characterized by mytonia with systemic manifestations such as cardiac disease, respiratory insufficiency, ophthalmic complications, diabetes and frontal balding among others. Face processing in police service: the relationship between laboratory-based assessment of face processing abilities and performance in a real-world identity matching task.

In the present study, we investigated whether police officers' performance in searching for unfamiliar faces in a video-based real-world task is predicted by laboratory-based face processing tests that are typically used to assess individual differences in face processing abilities. Specifically, perceptual performance in the field was operationalized via the identification of target individuals in self-made close-circuit television (CCTV) video tapes. Police officers' abilities in the laboratory were measured by the Cambridge Face Memory Test long form (CFMT+). We hypothesized that the CFMT+

Split-brain patients: Visual biases for faces.

Split-brain patients constitute a small subpopulation of epileptic patients who have received the surgical resection of the callosal fibers in an attempt to reduce the spread of epileptic foci between the cerebral hemispheres. The study of callosotomy patients allowed neuropsychologists to investigate the effects of the hemispheric disconnection, shedding more light on the perceptual and cognitive abilities of each hemisphere in isolation. This view that callosotomy completely isolates the hemispheres has now been revised, in favor of the idea of a dynamic functional reorganization of the two
